Semiauto SAR-80 "Sterling Assault Rifle" at the Range (Ad-free)

The SAR-80 was a design by Frank Waters at Sterling in the UK, but was not actually put into production by Sterling. Instead, it was licensed to Chartered Industries of Singapore in 1977, who eventually made about 80,000 of them for Singapore, Slovenia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, and the Central African Republic. This is a thoroughly simplified and stripped-down version of the AR-180 with no frills at all. A small batch of SAR-80 kits came into the US a number of years ago, but not much actually happened with them. Today, however, TTE Precision Metalwerks has a small batch of really nice semiauto rifles from them. Disclosure: I bought this rifle with my own funds; I just want to support and encourage the small companies making unusual historic rifles like this. It may be no frills, but it works well. It's a nice piece

Makes you wonder if the UK had gone with this design over the SA-80, with its simplified manufacturing, would they have avoided the quality issues or was the state of British arms manufacturing such that any design would have been botched

Off topic but any chance you’ll be able to review the Knight’s Armament PDW 6x35mm? You haven’t been to their facility in a while (iirc), any reason?

Guido Schriewer

it puts bullets downrange, doesn't it. so... something with a hole in it wouldn't know the difference between a nice pricy rifle or this.

I've found my TTE SAR-80 to be surprisingly accurate. It has to be the cheapest looking and feeling .223 semi auto I own, but it sure groups well.

You say it’s no frills and bare-bones, but what does AR15 or Mini14 do that this doesn’t do?

I pay attention to anything in videos about the AR 18 or any related firearms such as this one because I had a Sterling AR 180 many years ago and still rue the day that I had to sell it. Maybe it’s time to look at one of these!
