Hitchhiking was FAR more dangerous in 1980 than today. That was the time of the serial killer. Today we get mass shooters. Back then, it was serial killers. We don't have as many serial killers today because it's harder to get away with it for an extended period. Too many cameras, DNA, better forensics.
