The disconnect is not y’all not reading the books , it’s y’all not being interested in Greek mythology. After the movies failed I’m sure Disney didn’t want to put in a lot of money yet ( the estimates online are not real and were never confirmed ) the creators had to work with what they had and I’m glad the used the money to build the characters and story instead . Which is the opposite Atla Netflix did for example , it had the action sequences but you end the season not knowing a single character. If I wanted action and no story I’d open WWE . Season 2 is fully practical and they’ve mentioned a budget increase a lot so we will see how that goes .

I don't know. it might be due to them being film critics. As someone who loves Greek Myth, but hasn't read the books, but also is a film lover...this show was really hard to watch. The pacing, the edits, the hard cut to blacks, some of the acting. People praised the show for being closer to the source material, but just because it is more accurate does not mean it is better. I feel like enjoyers of the show are blindsided by their love for the book + accuracy that for people who aren't, might not enjoy it as much.
