Celerin crossed the portal into the heart of the camp, his mind keeping the construct open behind him so the others could follow. He would have to close a few of the more distant ones. The burden was starting to tax him.

Rows of royal guards from half a dozen different houses formed a mighty path to the largest tent, like so many statues esconced in heavy armor. They were like elaborate statues and just as useful, for Nero could not be killed. It was a show, one for the numberless horde around them. Celerin walked, the Hopecrusher catching up before overtaking him. He had to always be first, at the front, first to speak too. Celerin let his lingering anger pass through him. He only had to tolerate them until the unification was complete. Retirement couldn’t come too soon.

The tent was massive, perhaps as large as a small castle. An army of attendants moved as well as a few of Nero’s concubines and advisors — the line sometimes got blurry. One of the newer vanguards lifted a flap so he could pass. Celerin nodded. He was pretty sure the vanguard’s name was Seol. Or maybe that was his brother. He would have to ask later.

Nero was here, standing above a large map while returning a list of forms to an attendant.

A long time ago, the view would have stirred something in Celerin’s chest, but decades of change had killed that flame. Celerin could love a man. He couldn’t love a legend, especially one who never put down his mask. Even as Nero was at his most majestic. With hair of dull gold and deep gray eyes, Oleander possessed features of exotic origins that only heightened his beauty. A chiseled physique, an impeccable posture, grace and control in every movement, Nero was the perfect hero stepping already formed out of a story book. Even the white armor and cloaked, painted black and red at the bottom, were so perfect as to have been forged by a god. Of course, Nero remembered him as that courageous man standing against impossible odds and carrying wounded friends on his back, his face sorry and his eyes feverish. That was a long time ago, however. Of that man, there was nothing left. That is why Celerin neither bowed nor smiled.

A shadow of annoyance darkened Nero’s august brow and the reaction pleased Celerin on a visceral, petty level. He politely bid them in. Even at this distance, the radiance of his leadership shone like a small sun. His voice wasn’t booming but it was still, and would always be, crystal clear.

“You have returned. Is it done?”

The Hopecrusher opened his mouth to bullshit something since the man was apparently physically incapable of admitting a failure. Celerin’s time was precious since only his efforts kept the gigantic army fed, so he cut to the chase.

“No. But you should already know why. I can feel it in your aura.”

They had talked about it. About the last condition required so Nero could path up. It had been a long time ago, back when Nero still allowed people inside of his defenses.

“I am ready to ascend,” Nero confirmed.

A few people gasped. Someone ascending to the sixth step happened once in every generation at most, back in the Shadowlands, and those were usually elders at the apex of their power. Here though, it was just one more improbable achievement to lay at the feet of an impossible man.

“Then you know. We met your rival.”

Nero made a sign. The gaggle of attendants left in less than five seconds. They knew better than to linger. Nero was polite but he was also demanding.

“Explain.”

The Hopecrusher stood forward so Celerin braced himself for some more grandstanding bullshit. He wished Nero would just cut to the fucking chase and ask him instead but it seemed like this would be a longer conversation.

“As we descended upon the Sandsong, she appeared, hidden treacherously inside of their abandoned city.”

Celerin rolled his eyes. Treacherously? Really? He listened to the Hopecrusher exaggerating the battle as a one sided slaughter, and how he and Celerin had pushed the caster back, almost vanquishing her.

“Horse shit,” he interrupted.

Celerin felt the Hopecrusher tense. He wasn’t worried.

Nero’s eyes traveled down to him. Celerin didn’t look away. The fact his former friend even applied pressure would have been appalling to him only a few years back, but too many summary executions and other atrocities had lowered Celerin’s hopes and expectations all the way down. Too many complaints had cut Nero’s trust in his previous friend. Now the gap between them would never be bridged. Celerin only wanted out.

“Celerin. Describe her.”

“Remember the continental analysis sent by Erezak’s spies? Such as they are?”

“I do.”

“Remember his complaints about a black witch with an uncanny ability to make trouble?”

Nero nodded. Then he made a note on a paper at his side.

“You don’t seem surprised,” Celerin hazarded.

“I am not. She was the most likely culprit with King Sangor and the Sandsong royals. What else can you tell me?”

“She is half elemental of the black, fourth step of her path which uses witch casting, by the way. Oh, and her list of titles rivals yours.”

Nero paused. The Hopecrusher shivered, perhaps remembering something unpleasant.

“When my tall friend here said we fought her, that is a lie. We didn’t fight her. We delayed her as much as we could while attacking Sandsong troops to keep her on the backfoot. It didn’t work well, by the way. We failed to kill the royal couple.”

“You have portals. Explain.”

“She has portals too.”

Nero blinked, this time clearly surprised.

“She also picked that path?”

“Oh no no no. Her portals are spells. Colorless spells. Not a skill.”

“She can open portals as spells? In battle?”

“Yes. So she was able to follow us at all times, at first. Not just that, but she feels them open and reacts immediately. Eventually, we tried to create some distance and then I locked space around us which let us learn that she can also teleport using shadows. Oh, and she killed Belem, Kras, Ilda, and I assume Kelt as well since he never returned from the fortress.”

“What?”

Oleander paused again. His brow furrowed. It made him look strangely human again.

“Two fifth steps and a squad of fourth steps and you struggled?”

“You’re not listening. We were not struggling. We were stalling. It wasn’t a contest. At some point she formed a black sun around herself and then she collapsed it on top of us with her still in it. The sun exploded and killed everyone in a fifty paces radius. She’s not afraid of close quarter combat, she’s very mobile, and at no point were we even close to denting the outer layers of her defenses. I tried to attack via portal in her blind spot. She portal parried my portal parries. Oh, and she has spells to bypass portal blocks, some sort of noxious cloud she can more or less direct.”

“Stop praising her,” the Hoperusher spat.

“I’m not praising, I’m warning. I will list all of the capabilities we saw and then when Nero faces her, he will be forewarned,” Celerin patiently explained, even though he knew very well it was a waste of time.

The Hopecrusher’s mindset was one of hierarchy and power. He would never allow reality to contradict his belief, and everyone pointing that out was punished unless they were Crest.

“Three more things. One, her black spells were aggressive enough that they were eating at my portals which I had to permanently reinforce so take this into consideration. Two, she killed all of the vanguards in one spell each.”

Most vanguards had some measure of defenses against spells. Blademasters could simply cut at them with mana-charged attacks. Celerin knew some of them had tried. It had been of no use.

“Three, here is what I found about her spell repertoire.”

He listed all he remembered: the black cloud he had mentioned, the black laser that followed people with unerring precision, the portals, the colorless spikes, the shield that exploded outward, the quiet spheres that exploded, taking a ball of matter with them as they did, the strategic spell that turned the sky into a vessel of death, the void blades. He made sure to mention the void blades with attention because he was pretty sure they could actually kill Oleander.

When Celerin was finished, Nero turned to the Hopecrusher. The man didn’t meet his gaze.

“So let me summarize, you took two fifth steps and a squad of fourth steps went against that girl and you lost so badly, you were forced to avoid her and, eventually, retreat, losing four vanguards in the process?”

The Hopecrusher didn’t reply, but Celerin did because he was pissed off after trying to warn his former friend, was fed up with his intimidation games, and lastly because a part of him wanted to provoke Nero. See what he would do. Even if it were to be painful. Oleander needed Crest to keep his army from starving. It was a function no one else could replace. No one on their side anyway.

“Yes. Why?”

Animosity flared between them. Gods, but Celerin was ready to be done with it. He just had to see it to the end and then find some small island or something.

“I see…”

Nero didn’t try to discipline him. Perhaps being in private had nudged the stone in the direction of peace. He took that fake, benevolent face he did when someone failed but was still useful. He would go all fatherly while his gaze conveyed a deep, tired condescension.

“You have done well coming back considering the opposition. After all, she is the other Ascender. It is my destiny to defeat her in battle. Which means that we’re going after her. Now.”

Decisive as ever.

“Will you not path up?” the Hopecrusher asked with some surprise.

“No. The interface warned me that the class up would leave me unconscious for a while, but not for how long. I cannot take the risk of her taking a ship across the ocean, not if we can end this war before it even begins. Celerin, you’re with me. We will take the cavalry as well.”

“The Sandsong were retreating the last time we checked.”

Nero quickly assessed the situation. When he was focused on battle, he almost looked like his old self. None of the immortal king horseshit, just a confident man with a plan.

“Hopecrusher.”

“Milord?” the servile fucker asked.

“Give me back my shield. We will all travel back to the pass with the light cavalry and a supply train. You will make sure the army crosses while Celerin and I fly after that witch.”

“Yes, milord.”

Celerin ignored the Hopecrusher’s glare burning a hole between his shoulder blades. The idiot thought they were fighting for Nero’s favor. He didn’t get it. He never would.

“Let’s go.”

***

The Sandsong army’s retreat would have been a disaster of a rout were it not for Sidjin’s foresight. He’d commandeered the capital’s carts to bring supplies and the One Hundred up north. Now, those same carts would be used to carry the many, many wounded across the dunes, down a dusty path to a portal he’d set up in advance. It was very cold now, and those who could still move did their best to keep the wounded alive under an uncaring moon.

“They made fun of us, you know? The Sandsong. They think a warrior should never sit at the back of a cart,” Sidjin told her as they hovered near the column.

“Right. Well at least we can save more soldiers. Although… How much room do we have on the ships?”

“I suspected you might collect more minions,” Sidjin said. “So I’d say we can take… maybe three hundred people on our five ships. And it will be crowded.”

“Damn that’s… not a lot.”

She kept quiet for a while. It had been a long time since she’d felt this helpless to change the outcome of a war, but then, as always, her mind worked towards solutions.

“I need a way to shut down Crest. He managed to prevent space from folding around himself. I don’t think we can do it as quickly as he can, but I was thinking we could use a field effect based on space, inertia, and viscous runes.”

“You… want to turn space into thick honey?”

Viv shrugged. It was a pretty good analogy.

“Sure. Or marsh mud.”

“I think he relies on coordinates more than on brute strength,” Sidjin replied with a half smile that said ‘unlike you’. “I suggest using ‘tremor’ and ‘chaos’ instead.”

“It’s going to make the field very unpleasant.”

“You can probably tune down the spell intensity if you use those runes.”

“Brilliant. I knew I was keeping you around for something.”

Sidjin pretended to bow. As she created a construct in her mind, Viv’s gaze traveled towards the small detachment of blue roses.

“Did you have to take horses? Wasn’t it inconvenient?”

Sidjin frowned.

“Well they eat a lot but otherwise no. Why?”

“I’d assume they would hate being cooped up.”

Sidjin shrugged.

“They have the horses move on the deck twice per day. I don’t think there is much issue?”

Viv shook her head. Maybe it was a skill to calm the animals down but she imagined horses wouldn’t like sailing very much. Yet another weird thing to add to the collection.

Interestingly, the Sandsong were moving faster and keeping their head high around the One Hundred, who stoically kept to their impeccable formation. Harrakan heavy helmets covered the face except for the eyes so the black mass of elite warriors exuded a calm sense of superiority that grated their guests. Even on the backfoot, the Sandsong still had their pride.

Vov sighed. She was distracting herself from what was urgent.

“Even if we add Sandsong ships to an ad hoc fleet, there is no way we can evacuate even a fraction of their army, not to mention their citizens. I need to talk to the royal couple.”

“I will keep an eye out.”

As she flew, Viv couldn’t help but check her options for pathing up. Even if she wasn’t going to pick one yet, she could still give it some thought.

[Obliteron:

Annihilation, incarnate.

Your understanding of annihilation is pushed to its limits. Your spells reach unparalleled levels of destructiveness. Your ability to cast rituals is vastly improved. Your [Aspect of the Destroyer] becomes static again. Last aspect and max social skills unlocked. ]

That seemed neat enough, although she wasn’t sure how much more destructive she was supposed to become. There was always a path up option that offered to funnel her into a weapon of mass destruction kind of path. There was a truth that she could solve a lot of her problems by destroying them at the atomic level, but what had stopped her the previous times still applied: she was already destructive enough. Her issue was and had always been versatility. The Obliteron class lacked defenses, something reinforced by the static nature of her offensive aspect. Nevertheless, it was an incredibly potent path and she knew she could make it work.

A whisper of memories touched her mind. The Azure Lady and others had warned her about being caught in a path, becoming a slave to one’s own nature. She wasn’t that comfortable about being focused on annihilating things.

The next path up was almost the opposite.

[Heart of Harrak.

Harrak Eternal.

Your leadership skills transcend to proto-divine versions. Every time you don the [Aspect of the Paragon], your followers all gain a portion of your power. [Aspect of the Paragon] gains minor benefits from other aspects. Last aspect and max social skills unlocked. ]

Viv remembered Sardanal’s cradle and the time Neriad’s essence had infused hers. He had turned a bunch of exhausted templars and militiamen into the deadliest force she’d ever seen or faced… but he was a god. She was not. This was a lesser version of his blessing. She could already see two problems with this path. One, it meant she had to rely on [Aspect of the Paragon] in battle, again reducing her flexibility. It also meant that she wouldn’t get to use the mysterious last aspect she hadn’t unlocked yet. Two, her troops didn’t need to be stronger. They were already plenty strong. What she needed was to keep high elites off their backs like she’d tried to do with the Sandsong in the pass. In a way, her approach was the one Celerin had favored. It didn’t feel like a good option for her, and so she dismissed it. The next one was definitely more interesting.

[Cataclyst

No one can stop change.

You claim the Spark of Luck and make it yours, gaining an instinctive ability to alter the flow of fates. [Spark of Luck] becomes [Will of the Black Witch]. You will sense the blade aimed at your heart or the offensive that will break your lines. When things flow your way, they flow quickly. If defeat is imminent, you can pull a miracle from thin air. Last aspect and max social skills unlocked. ]

After understanding her third options, Viv was getting a sense of how things were working. All those paths were unique. Unique paths were almost always above all others in their specific niches, so she was really getting favored having all those options. Slaying dragons and resurrecting empires was paying off. All those paths up would also make her even more powerful, magic wise, but they all focused on one of her strengths. Obliteron played on her reliance on the annihilation meaning. Heart of Harrak would work on intimidation and leadership. Cataclyst would be more about soul sense, or rather, her ability to understand how fate brought interesting things to her doorstep. Cataclyst felt like a good option because fate magic was utter bullshit, and also denied to humans in general. Who needed to work hard when they could luck out instead. As she checked the next option, her suspicions were confirmed.

[Celestial.

Ad Astra

Space magic, and space in general, are open to you. You can now open massive portals with much more ease, very quickly, and keep them open at a distance. You may fly at will. The potency of your colorless spells is vastly increased. Last aspect and max social skills unlocked. ]

Ok, this was… very strong. Very strong indeed. Flight was less of a boon than it might have been ten years ago because she's practiced hard to make up for a lack of it, but that would still be strong. The possibility of long range portals was also… if the range was forty kilometers, she could just fly up and open one in the upper atmosphere. Or even higher. She could open a portal at the bottom of the abyss and create water flows so strong they could cut rock. The possibilities were endless…]

Viv shook her head. Celestial and Catalyst were her favorites, with Obliteron still a consideration. She rapidly went over the other choices as she descended near the Sandsong royal guards. Some were good but none were close to the unique classes she had. She noticed ‘Empress of Harrak’ was an option. It was telling how strong she’d become that ‘sovereign of an empire’ wasn’t even up for consideration.

The interface still offered her the opportunity to become a potter.

Viv didn’t think Nous would even let her pick it.

***

Viv didn’t find the ruling couple of Sandsong at the head of the convoy with their young child and the support staff. Bes was here, Viv knew, alongside Sin and Mar. Instead, they did what leaders were supposed to do. King Jei talked to warriors to improve their spirits while Queen Naila used her considerable powers to help with healing and even warming the wounded, as the night was very cold. She was relieved to see that they had recovered from their recent despair. Or rather, they had learned to hide it, she assumed. They finished what they were doing before meeting Viv. She was sorry to inform them about the ship situation. They accepted her words with a resignation that mauled her heart. It wasn’t exactly her fault, but she had come, given them hope, and then Oleander had smashed it all to pieces.

“What will happen to the rest?” Jei asked, hand brushing his beard.

Despite the tensions, he had taken a minute to oil it so he could retain his regal appearance. Viv approved. It was important.

“The Hopecrusher claimed those who kneeled would be spared. I believe him. Oleander does not wish to rule over a graveyard. Maranor’s philosophy implies a strict hierarchy, but so long as people respect it, they are spared. The only risk is that he would press the soldiers into his army. I am assuming it wouldn’t be the first time.”

“An oath cannot be forced,” Queen Naila said, but then she shivered and wouldn’t meet Viv’s eyes.

“Ah, I am deluding myself. I felt the imminence of his coming when the Hopecrusher left. Those who behold him will think him the next step to a god.”

And they might very well be right, Viv thought.

“We will make an announcement in the capital. I suspect many nobles will want to join us. What do you know of our history?” Naila asked.

“Your uncle told me your family seized power a generation ago.”

“Then he has left out what mattered. We were ruled by a tyrant. We fought that tyrant, and won, because the people rose with us. And now after the death of my esteemed father, I am about to surrender them to another one. I… I… I have failed…”

Her voice broke down. Her husband placed a hand at side, drawing her in. The nearest soldiers pretended not to see.

“It’s not over,” Viv said. “We lose now. We run, but it’s not over. There is Param. I suspect some of them will follow him when he arrives, but not all. Come with me and give your people a future. It might take a year, or ten, but I will defeat him, and then you will return.”

“His will is strong.”

“Yeah. I have guns.”

“What?”

“Nothing. Just remember, the victor is the one who deals the last blow. My previous country was defeated and conquered before, but we always got free in the end.”

Viv harbored no illusion that her words would soothe them. They just had their entire world taken from them. All their dreams, all their hopes, the weight of the previous generation’s sacrifice. She remembered fleeing from Kazar after Varska had unceremoniously poisoned her. All that rage. And she’d only been in town for a couple of months. She hadn’t even felt like it had been her city.

“We will make plans. Lists of people who should leave. Some will refuse. Others will fight, even if it means death. They will say we dishonor our fathers.”

“They have not met Oleander,” she told them.

“We know. They will be lost all the same,” Naila said. “Is it true that your paramour will open a path to the city?”

“Yes. It should help us escape pursuit. The Sheem may not know the desert as well as you do, but they know how to follow an army,” Viv said with confidence.

“Then we will dress that list there. We will talk to the rear guard first. They have tools to help us escape.”

“Do not fight,” Viv said. “If you see someone, come to me. I will help.”

“Of course,” Naila said.

***

Viv moved back towards her own troops. The One Hundred were on foot now, and though the knights still rode their horses, half of them walked by the side of their mounts instead. The mood was serious. They also smelled of sweat.

Order Master Rollo saluted smartly as she approached with a fist over his heart.

“Your Imperial Majesty.”

“How are things, Rollo? We might see some more action soon.”

He looked around in a way she recognized. Viv instantly cast a privacy veil.

“You can speak freely,” she told him.

“It would be good if we didn’t fight here. Four of our chargers were hurt stepping on some sharp rocks during the short engagement. We have skills to look after our mounts, of course, and we have healed them… but heavy knights do not perform well on sand and gravel. Your majesty, I can only stress the truth of your paramour’s warnings: we must leave. We cannot win here.”

“And we will. Alright, so charges should be avoided. What about the One Hundred?”

Rollow gestured. Viv approached Ban junior who saluted just as well. She walked by their side.

“How is everyone?”

“We are ready for more, Your Majesty.”

“Does the sand affect your movement?”

“It is not much different from the Deadlands. Perhaps rockier. We are still fresh thanks to the carts.”

His eyes narrowed. He gave the Sandsong walking nearby a contemptuous glare.

“We will outlast them, Your Majesty. You can count on us.”

“Hmmm.”

She left them to their glaring contest. Viv wouldn’t be able to hold anything with just a hundred and fifty men anyway. It wouldn’t matter though. Words carried across the line. The Sandsong had found an anomaly on the road.

Sidjin hurried on with the rest of the Harrakan. Viv hovered nearby.

“I’ll open and maintain the portal. Keep an eye out while I evacuate everyone.”

“Alright.”

Something exploded behind them. Panic spread across the line of wounded soldiers. Viv and Sidjin’s eyes met.

“I’ll go. Get us out of here,” Viv ordered, and Sidjin sprinted away. Viv flew back, feeling the distant mana bursts that signaled a heavy battle was being fought. She raced over the path, crossing retreating soldiers. The sounds of approaching riders made her wince but she kept going. It wasn’t enemy riders she was worried about. Sandsong singers were flying around. As she watched, a portal opened near one of them, and he died. The rear guard was a scene of carnage. Royal guards and soldiers lay dying on the ground, cut down by something extremely sharp, and in the middle of that circle of destruction were two men standing near the corpse of King Jei. He was very dead, though his face was against the ground, fist steel grasping his blade. No one could survive with that little chest left. A crying Naila turned, spotting Viv as she approached. She had already given up. Her eyes were pleading.

“Save our —”

The taller man cut her in half with no effort. Only his arm moved, but the power of the blow sent the queen’s upper body tumbling at a distance. The rest fell slowly, and quietly. Viv’s and the swordsman’s eyes met.

Two meters tall, easy. The face of a greek god at its most arrogant. A himbo gone evil. His armor was white with black boots, and gleaming with enchantments. His sword was an artefact she didn’t take the time to inspect, but whose power she could feel. The intimidation that radiated out from him was monstrous. It forced Viv to put her own out at the same moment or risk being submerged. His spoke of innumerable battles, decades upon decades of war all for the good of mankind, and now, he would rule it. He was the grim hero, the face of order, who would drag the species, screaming, into a new age. The most surprising thing was how absolutely weary his soul felt under all the trappings of power. It was a core of steel and conviction and… nothing else. No weakness, no emotions, no mercy. Viv looked there and saw… nothing. Just a fatigue beyond thought, beyond care. After so long, the only drives left were duty and ambition. She hovered at a distance as the two took each other’s measure.

[Herald of Maranor. Fifth step of a unique path dedicated to order and might. Blade master…]

Viv didn’t take the time to read the rest. It was enough to know he was an absolute beast, but more importantly, he hadn’t had the time to path up yet. Celerin stood next to him. The difference between the two was like watching a tourist posing near an ancient statue. He tried to open a portal.

“Interdict,” Viv said.

She cast the spell. Space blurred around her, dispersing the portal as it formed rather than blocking it. Celerin chuckled bitterly, like he couldn’t believe she already had a countermeasure.

Yeah, Viv wasn’t having much fun either, buddy.

“Is it her?” Oleander asked.

His voice carried no emotion besides boredom and resignation.

“Yes.”

Viv had several shields up before Crest closed his mouth. Something utterly massive punched them, cracking several layers and sending her back with a ‘ouch’ of protest. She saw it as it returned to Nero’s waiting hand: it was his shield. He’d thrown his shield at her, and it had done more damage than all the attacks of the previous battle combined. Her [Always a Chance] triggered immediately, informing her Nero was stronger than her, and not by a little.

Still not enough to crush her though. As Oleander prepared for another attack, Viv realized something important.

He couldn’t fly. Oleander couldn’t reach her. If she could just —

Their attacks triggered at the same time. His shield was, once again, in her face while her nuee blanketed the hills. Oleander drew a white blade and struck. Her spell was torn apart at a conceptual level, but it was enough for her to realize he was concerned about her attacks. She renewed the nuee before adding more attacks — those mostly deflected by Crest. He grabbed the shield again. His aura expanded. It was as if he was calmly removing his cloak before starting for real. Pressure made her flinch. He was…

[Aspect of the Guardian]

The shield impacted her defenses again. Every attack seemed more powerful than the next. This one had almost breached it. Cold fear scratched at her throat. Another and… how was he doing it. Fearful, she looked down.

Nero’s face was a mask of surprise and horror. Celerin’s mouth made an ‘o’ of shock. They almost died to her nuee before some danger sense kicked in. Viv didn’t get what was happening until she spotted the debris at the other Ascender’s feet.

It was a piece of shield. There was another closer to her. Another to their side. White fragments of superheated metal rain around them. It was, she realized, his shield. The heavily enchanted, almost an artifact shield. The thing that had stopped her spells at the pass battle. It was broken. Shattered. She had no idea what could —

[Vandal! Haha. >:D

You should probably run now.]

Viv didn’t have to be asked twice.

OH MY GOD. Finally we have the payout for the vandal joke and it's glorious

is Nous hedging his bets or just trolling at an opportune moment? Great chapter!

FINALLY! ALL THOSE BROKEN CUPS WERE WORTH IT FOR THIS MOMENT!

Hello

So excited for more, my favourite arc so far

So, thanks Nous?

WarStrider72

Looks like that Vandal title was worth something in the end. Better get going while the getting is good!

Thanks for the chapter!

I laughed out loud at that last bit. Vandal being useful for once! (And Nous' "you should probably run now," having just probably saved her life.) This was wondeful!

Emily Gurnavage

Lol what an ending. The plot armor is thick with this one (read it like Yoda), but im no less excited for what happens next.

Pinpenny the great lithian

That ending genuinely made me bark out a laugh at work. Thankfully there's only like 2 other people in this office space with me

John Anastacio

I believe this the first time Vandal has acted in her favor. Delicious, satisfying. Sad about Jei and Naila but I don't think that could have been avoided. The royal couple were duty bound to stay with their people, which lost them mobility. I'm rather surprised Viv was able to block Nero even temporarily, and also that Nero is unable to fly or teleport. I think that means Viv might be stronger than Nero was when he was peak 4th step. Also Nero might depend completely on Celerin for mobility.

Persepolis

Bro I can't I'm dying at that message

Good ol vandal always popping up at the most hilarious moments

Wait, what happened?

VANDAL.

Appreciate the last second assist!

Bro why did they have to die

AzureMaiden

Maybe not stronger per se, because it’s like rock paper scissors. It’s heavily implied that Nero has spec’d into a warrior/leader path, which probably has more direct battle prowess. Teleport and flight aren’t strictly combat abilities, as much as utility abilities with combat applications. It gives Viv tools which Nero lacks—but he presumably had tools, even at that time, which she didn’t have, so it’s not a simple comparison. Love that Vandal proc’d there; the Spark of Luck really pulled through. Nero has no way of knowing what happened; to him it probably looks like she broke an unbreakable object with *NO* effort at all. Not even a spell or skill—Vandal doesn’t have a perceptible activation, so it looks like she just…willed it to break. Which, when you think about it, probably had the same psychological impact as Hela first catching Mjolnir, and then shattering it with one hand. It gave them an ‘oh shit’ moment because if she could pull a move like *that*, what else might she have tucked away?

i shteynberg

[Vandal! Haha. >:D holly, stacking the deck, cow!

Pete Magnuson

The meme VANDAL title that the system god gave here a while back for breaking things in unlikely ways, triggered on the shield. Seems that Nous is tilting the scales a bit in her favor, even if she does cause him endless problems

i cant wait to see Solfis' opinion of Nero and a duel between them would be just amazing to read!

KnightRider007

Celerin's perspective makes Oleander...terribly, terribly *sad*. A man entirely consumed and subsumed by his Path. Not sure if it's because his Path was inextricably linked to a God, or because he simply failed to properly temper himself to retain his sense of self, but he has lost that which supported his rise and development. He has lost his humanity, his friends, and presumably his actual soul.

Swinter

At the last bit? Vandal triggered and Neros shield broke. Vandal is the ability/curse that the dead god gave Viv after she broke one of those "indestructible" stones at the university. It triggered on Neros shield and broke it. Or the dead god triggered it for her. Because the gods like Viv.

SnowReason

Is it implying the shield frags are gonna blow, or just get away from Nero? Also the parts from Celerin's POV make me hopeful he ends up defecting to our side.

D

[]“His will is strong.” “Yeah. I have guns.”[] This made me laugh [][Vandal! Haha. >:D You should probably run now.][] And this made me laugh even harder Seriously, i guess our friendly system god tipping the scales for viv was a nice move. Totally D.E.M in the most literal sense ive seen so far. XD On a side note, did the queen have the child with her? Or does empress viv and princess arthur getting a try on raising human children? Realizing they can be much more of a terror then little hatchlings? ^_^

David Brims

I think it's 'get away from Nero, his legendary shield breaking will really piss him off'

BaguaBrady

Nous is the only competent god in this whole story, the true MVP

David Brims

Yeah, I'm sad about it too. But it makes sense with Crest's portals in play: this is the problem Viv and Sidjin's opponents have as well. With portals their mobility is hard to control and they can attack weak points with very little warning.

Philipp Zander

Maaaaaan, their deaths sure are a kick to the teath....I can only hope that their child will find a fine mentor in Arthur and gets to bond a particular fierce dragonling

Full Derp

I did not see that vandal coming! What an awesome surprise.

David Brims

I think I like Catalyst better than Celestial. Celestial lets her duplicate and improve on Sidjin's skill set, which is pretty cool. But she's already got Sidjin (who is hopefully also close to classing up). Catalyst lets her do complete bullshit that we saw how strong it can be with the Lizard people. And there's a reason the God of Luck was the previous king of the gods. Thoughts?

anonymous wildfire

After stealing her gun, this feels right. Thank you Vandal, lol. Imagine being an “Immortal King” forging a near artifact just from your shield, practically indestructible, then you throw it at some upstart and it just shatters like a plate thrown into some pavement. LMAO! Dude’s gotta be so befuddled. Imagine if he was so stunned that he had actually just taken her Nuee to the face and the fight was just immediately over.

Samuel

I believe Viv has used Vandal before, just got to find it.

MountainFox

Was Vandal breaking the gun earlier a way to balance karma for this... divine intervention?

Clifton

He's the (dead) god of magic so I suspect, all else being equal, he's biased toward Viv. Probably, the gods aren't 'allowed' to interfere, so they have to use what openings they have.

anonymous wildfire

Big agree. Especially since fate magic would take her another step towards realizing her true draconic destiny.

anonymous wildfire

He really is the other side to the coin. It’s implied that he had a similar origin to Viv, fighting against the odds as a rebellious force for good. Yet where Viv was tempered in her pursuits, he lost himself in them. I reckon that the deciding factor in their fight will be Viv’s companions vs his, and we’ve already seen the contrast there.

AzureMaiden

Imagine if Nero obliterated Viv’s shield made of tokens from everyone she’s helped…

Roombot

Finally Vandal comes in handy!!

lenkite

Well, probably the entire point of her Fate that brought her here was not to save anyone but to destroy that Shield with [Vandal] when Oleander was separated from his forces. It probably took the full force of not just the skill but Oleander's strength and Viv's shield to shatter it.

lenkite

Need to develop anti-teleport pillars that can be carried on these carts that displaces teleporters a few km away without an authentication key. We barely even got to know this King and Queen. They gave their oath, viv released them from their Oath and then they died.

Kennyevilmonkey

She should definitely take the Fate magic class. Finally take the Luck god's power and make it fully hers.

Kennyevilmonkey

This is also probably why the lizards are on their way. Besides wanting to take these two out at the same time, they probably want to kill Viv before she has a chance to take their one advantage for herself and become even more of a true threat to them.

Ranger Science

“Vandal”! Best chekov’s gun ever, literally laughed out loud, not just a chuckle, actual, honest to god laugh. Wonderful.

Senko

For me it comes down to size and distance which isn't really mentioned. Catalyst is a strong number one but if you can open a portal big enough to sail a ship through from here to anywhere on the planet with no intimediary portal then that becomes a strong contender. I'd probably still go with catalyst though and as I said anything less than that and fate magic is a clear number one.

Senko

I'm wondering if some of his, Celerin particularly will change sides to a God who can remove the mask and remember the little people rather than just trampling them without notice.

Isiah Debarros

I know it's like completely the wrong reason to want to go to celestial and I want her to choose it for the daughter

Joe ?

My read is that this whole time Vandal was banking up inconvenient breaks for years so that it could do this one life saving break and be in balance.

Quex

I like calaclyst because it really brings back the original framing of the story -- maranor making a bid to take control of the pantheon. I have to imagine if Oleander wins and becomes the scion of humanity she uses that as the leverage to take over. Meanwhile, Viv has done a great job currying favors with all of the other gods over her adventures so cataclyst feels like the choice that lets her cash in those favors the best.

David Brims

I get what you're saying, but I keep thinking Viv will end up with an Aspect of Dragon and be able to shapeshift into a Dragon, or at least half-Dragon. And she won't need smoother spatial flight if that happens. And her daughter was really clear: Viv has to grow real wings. Advanced levitation doesn't count.

Alexander Dupree

Yeah the portals are more obviously powerful but a free hand with your own deus ex machina is just Contessa from Worm.

BelligerentGnu

Nous you miserable fucking bastard, I STILL HATE THAT TITLE!

BelligerentGnu

Yeah, bit of a mystery why Celerin is sticking around, he reads like someone who is completely out of fucks to give.

RonGAR

I knew you were going to stall the "path up" for a few chapters and it sucked to see that I was right about that. But you gave a lot to distract away from that disappointment. (Hoping you don't go on BREAK without making a choice) --------------------------- First off, you gave some great options. >Obliteron: A FullForce/Full Attack Path: Hmmm after what I've seen, she maayy want to reconsider this one. lol >Heart of Harrak: Does she really need another Path that ties her to the throne and country? The ability to 'share' power with your followers is cool, but I agree with her and doubt it would be as good as the power-ups given to the warriors on Sardinal island. No point in taking it then. >Cataclyst: Luck and Fate. Pulling Miracle out of thin air sounds amazing, but every comic book I've ever read about the powers of luck, means when you are getting good luck, the people or area around you suffers from Bad Luck. Essential you'll be sacrificing others, possibly ppl you care about, in trade for something good to happen to you. >And last but not least Celestial: SPACE MAGIC She has yet to fully explain what 'THE BLACK' means to her. It's not necromancy because that is taboo. It's not change, since some of that is 'restricted' by other gods, so she can't fully use it, at least not without permission. So why not make THE BLACK about the VOID of SPACE itself? Goddess of SPACE, distance, and speed. Flight, teleportation, and all things in-between distances. INFINITE SPACE... CELESTIAL would be my choice. Not to mention she would finally GET HER WINGS!!! LOL Or at least True flight. Arthur would be so, so proud. LOL ------------------- Damn, The King and Queen got killed. Honestly did not expect that. Thought they would live and rebuild their kingdom. I guess Viv just got herself another Heir with the newborn child the Queen and King left behind. --------------- How is Viv going to get out of this one? Use the 'CHANGE' to turn one of them into a tree. [W/ permission of course] She really is in a tough spot and has almost no rest. But Vandal of ALL THINGS came in handy for once LOLOLOLOL Was NOT expecting that! LOLOL --------- Well done! Liked this chapter a lot.

D

Had the same thought about the child, i mean aside from the heir thing, she has arthur for that. ^^ Also i remember in one of the previous chapters of this arc, viv was angry at emeric again because she remembered that he took her ability for having children. So if its true that she is going to raise the baby, it would mean that it was for-shadowing the event... O_o Now im wondering, did mecanimus do it on purpose or was it coincidence? Not that we'll ever know, even if it wasn't, he'll probably be: 'was totally forshadowing, had that all planed out, thats my story and ill stick to it...' ;-D

RonGAR

YEaH never ask an author that... the answer is Always Always, Yes! Was leading up to this all along. LOLOLOL

Benjamin Mages

Teeechnically it's not directly Emeric's fault that she can't have kids, that's because she's half-elemental. It is his fault in that he started the sequence of events that forced her hand into turning into a half-elemental.

Benjamin Mages

My opinion is that he's sticking with it out of a promise made to the Oleander who was his friend even if that man doesn't really exist anymore. It's in honor of his original goals and intentions.

D

@benjamin: No its because she has no live mana i think. Also i might be wrong about that.

Jed Wolfgang

Wtf! How long have you been holding that in your pocket? Vandal was actually helpful!? Fuuuuuck me that was excellent.

a passing Fnord

Hah. That ending is an amazing chekov.

Max E Malekzadeh

Catalyst makes a lot of sense but celestial could let her take the majority of Sandsong back to Harrak right now if I'm not wrong. I think she may have initially misunderstood what was meant by long range portals...

Andrew

Thank you!

Denva

You are wrong about luck. First of all this is not other stories. So the whole thing about being more lucky that other people don't prosper around you is wrong. Emeric was able to lead his friends with luck to victory against the old gods. And given what we have been told about luck(fate magic) by the dragons its not the way you describe it. You are wrong about Viv not having explained what the black is. Where were you when she was gaining the ability to become and elemental cloud. Go read the chapter were they fight the hordes of undead. The black is her catalyst. The path of catalyst in this chapter is what she will chose because she made the black her catalyst. And about the child. I don't know. She already have Author. I don't think the the uncle of the child will allow that let alone The nobles of sendsong. And let's not forget Viv didn't take sendsong as her own. Such a move will allow sendsong ability to influence harack politics. Even if she makes the child her own why? With Author the first in line of the throne and them being immortal its just a wast of time. I don't think Viv is desperate for a child to take a fake human when she already has a dragon daughter. I don't know it just sounds out there. Doesn't make sense.

Denva

Plus catalyst is what her black represents.

Denva

The sendsong are not in danger though. As good as portals are catalyst is the one because that's what she made her black be remember when she was fighting the undead.

tr13ze

Thanks for the chapter 😁

Nait02

“Stop praising her,” the Hoperusher spat. -> Hopecrusher, though Hoperusher is a far more amusing name

Keifru

CHEKOV'S VANDAL STRIKES! amazing

Max

Nooo, why did they die, now viv has to adopt their baby…

Lijwent

And now her own shield sould become an artefact, that would so piss them off

Red Viking

Vandal takes, and takes, and takes, and takes, and takes, and takes, and takes, AND THEN IT COMES IN CLUTCH AND GIVES!!!

D

Woah, youre taking this very serious, do you? So because someone has already a child they cant adopt a nother? Way to go... O.O As for the reason, well, maybe because of the mothers lasts words? As for the uncle, i might be wrong, but isnt he the granduncle in this case? From what we heard about their culture so far, it might be more likely that he becomes the new admiral of vivs budding fleet and comes from time to time to spoil his grand niece. Oh and about sandsongs politics... seriously? O_o First there will be no sandsong for quite some time till oleander is dead, and even if there where, vivs political answer is probably 'defenestrate'. So no worries there. I think its a nice idea for her getting to juggle the kid raising and the ass kicking (also the 'boy toy' might want to try his hand on being a dad too). Lastly: I want to see arthur going big sister mode here. XD

RainyCats

How is Maranor not a dark god at this point

Kota

Isn't Maranor already head of the pantheon during Emeric's exile? I thought it was aid she already has that position, so not sure if she has much to gain in the divine realm... Also, as others have said, a god switching sides/pantheons has happened multiple times before, so who wants to guess Maranor becomes a dark god eventually? Certainly there are more atrocities committed in her name than any other deity except the dark gods...

JLM

Vandal paired with Spark of Luck is an amazing combo. Hahahaha.

David Brims

I suppose there is one other wildcard here: we don't know what weapon Viv & Harrak made from the civilization-ending crystal they got from Old Harrak. If it is something that would be particularly advantaged by the Celestial path, enabling Viv to defeat Oleander and his armies, that might be a reason to pick Celestial.

KnightRider007

Nero is peak fifth tier. Do we actually know what “tier equivalent” Solfis is?

Red Viking

She's already on the path with the whole "trying to resurrect the old God King", but she's not there quite yet. She's still has order as one of her divine aspects, if authoratarian order.

Jennifer Leigh

I think the bar fight in Helock it helped. Of course, it also contributed to the start of the brawl.

ItWasIDIO!!

Good job the long con the joke becomes hilarious again

Denva

I think you are seeing it as too much a black and white. What happened here doesn't make maranor a dark god. World conquest is just that conquest.

Denva

I don't think so. Author is still first in line to the throne. And sandsong still has its nobles that that will want the child back. Let's not forget her great uncle.

Daemion

From an utilitarian point of view, Oleander's conquest of the world would save millions of lives and speed up progress. There would be peace and prosperity. That it would be under a strict hierachy and enforced by heavy punishments is another matter. Maranor is neither good or evil in this, she's simply on the side of order and conquest. Viv could use her as well for most of her campaigns.

Daemion

I think if Viv takes the baby, then it'll grow up as a ward. Arthur is the heir and her children after her. But the last of the Sandsong royality gets to grow up with them and perhaps, in the future, they will retake Sandsong and restore their kingdom.

FuriousDee

She has to beat Emeric to become the leader she didn’t exile him he just left so she hasn’t managed to do that yet

FuriousDee

It seems more like that was Nous picking a side given how he then told her to run

FuriousDee

Oleander doesn’t like or trust mages at all if I remember correctly

Raptor425

Well I'm not gonna lie, VERY disappointed that the King and Queen of Sandsong died. I was hoping to see some shenanigans back in Harrak as Viv showed them how she ruled, which they would then learn from and take back to their homeland eventually once they recaptured it. Having the opinion of a King and Queen who, while not local to Param, hailed from the world would give a nice contrast to Viv and her wing it bullshit style of ruling. They also just seemed like nice people in general and deserve a chorus of Fs in chat to pay respects. F Edit: also despite my sadness at the King and Queen's death, thank you for the chapter. Always a pleasure to read.

Kazith

Man, you’re such a fucking brilliant author!

Clifton

I think the pick has to be Cataclyst, not because Celestial isn't amazing too, but because Cataclyst gives her something she doesn't have - some degree of control of fate mana. Currently she can follow luck, with it she can create luck. Celestial builds on what she has, and could presumably get to eventually.

Jeanean

Now imagine Cataclyst allowing her some degree of control XD

Alexander Dupree

Might need to have an actual personality to advance to god which is why they warned her not to get caught in her path.

ImaRat

I have to admit it never crossed my mind when reading the previous chapter, but what's the best thing to do when fighting the deadliest mage on Param? Trade spells? Nope, try and stab them? Oh Course not, its to Captain America their ass with your MAGIC NEGATING shield! It makes total sense and I somehow never saw it coming.

Leviathon251

Yeah not going to lie, it does seem pretty strange. I guess it depends somewhat on interpretation, but I feel like what's been described goes a ways beyond just 'strict heirarchies' and into abject cruelty and rule through fear.

RonGAR

@Denva You suuurree you are the one in the Right? Sure Emeric had Luck and led his friends to victory buutttt did they all get there happily or did they suffer along the way? Isn't his wife trying to kill him after this 'quest'? Didn't one of them lose their family on this 'quest' and became a dark god, and is now been remade into a light god and god of second chances? Seems to me, Emeric is still smiling widely while others around him aren't. Secondly... you really think that the fully grasped the concept of the black in that moment? SMH. She STILL thinks on it 15yrs later after that moment. So no, she hasn't fully grasped it, and doesn't know what the black really means to her. Look if you want her to choose catalyst, fine, but just say that.

ErrebanRrereban

Celestial.. bcuz meteor portals? Tsunami portals? Solar portals? Magma portals? Portal to the front of judgements mouth portals? Hell yes

NoReTr3aT

Become a lake'o'mancer like cat from A practical guide to evil. When in doubt drop a lake on your enemies.

InLucidReverie

"Vov sighed." Amusing typo

HJ

I think solfis is outside the tiers and his capability is only limited by his armor and the tools he has at his disposal. I’m pretty sure with the right tools he could kill a god.

Aram Ibrahim Camps

I just straight up CACKLED when vandal came in for the save

Enif

[Vandal] coming in clutch!

Steven C

> The plot armor is thick with this one Well yeah. The only baffling thing is that she isn't instapicking the path of MC shens.

Emily Gurnavage

She can't path-up right now because it'll knock her out for several hours. Same reason the other guy didn't yet either. He wanted to ambush her fast, but pathin up woulda meant waiting a while.

Steven C

> But it makes sense with Crest's portals in play Yup, it's the classic mage with scry and fry on both sides

FuriousDee

If she chooses catalyst will anyone even know what they are given they don’t have chemistry class in school

Caitlin

Yesssaa vandal!!! Amazing!!!

KnightRider007

Not “Catalyst”, but “CataClyst”. I’m 100% sure this is not a typo. She’s half way between a catalyst and a cataclysm…

Max

I mean she kinda sad that she wanted a baby, now there is one on the silver plate

Grumpy Cucumber

Dark gods are anti-civilized species, Maranor is pro human, though less so individuals with little power

MoonlitShade

Smh Nous wouldn’t let Viv become a Potter because then she would be too OP for this world

Diego Rossi

@Alexander Dupree. Oleander seems to have lost most of what made him a candidate for ascendency, now he is a template applied to an empty core. Dark/Light gods are mostly a construct of the currently dominating pantheon. Dark goods aren't necessarily evil. Enttiku was a dark god, and Efenstar (Fefe) was a dark good. Entikku is the necessity of death, unpleasant but real and indispensable. Efenstar is vengeance and rebellion, an important god for the undertrodden.

Diego Rossi

It seems the more credible hypothesis, Benjamin. Or some form of oath they made back before Oleander changed. Oaths have real power and breaking one isn't easy, nor without consequences.

KnightRider007

Also possible that he truly believes this path has the best *overall* outcome for humanity as a whole, but he’s just massively disenchanted by the steps necessary to reach that end goal.

Adam Davies

Oh my god. I cant even NOUS!!!

Sarah

I think it will set up her adopting their kiddo

Young Youghurt

Viv uses pot of greed... it's super effective!

Sean Hibbitt

Nous!! I love it! A god sent an emoji xD

Tofol

On chapter 101( at least on royal road) celerin is told to be a woman, since sidjin uses she to describe her, in this chap he is a man, either people are generally mistaken of his gender of it is a continuity error, that's all

KnightRider007

No, but neither is “Obliteron”. In both cases, the intended meaning is pretty clear.

Louise

Dear Nous. I am absolutely wheezing. The little AH. I hope she meets him one day so she can clock him one right in the face. Lolllllll He's so ridiculous. I love it.
