The Wonderlanders are onto something up til the end, but thats where we make mindless automation to fulfill the tasks of food and infrastructure. So long as we introduce zero artificial intelligence beyond "Do this task at this time in this way" then ostensibly it would simply function.

the problem is that, honestly, farming is hard. Building is hard. I don't think you can reduce the skills necessary to farm down to even a very complicated algorithm, without giving it some degree of decision making and problem solving ability. Some stuff can be automated, clearly, because we've done that, but, unless you want mindless automatons being unable to plant because they didn't recognize a blight destroyed their crops or refusing to plant because the fields are too dry and not being able to fix it, you're going to need someone who can think in the loop somewhere.
