Proof of Life #175: Halfway there? (Patreon)

Heya you beautiful and un-beautiful people alike, how are you doing in this fine morning/afternoon/evening? Thank you for tuning-in with me for this highly anticipated Monday PoL number 175. Already 175+ weeks since I started this whole thing~

Anyway, let's get onto the main part of this post. I'm 99% finished with Haylen's quest including testing, and I'm mostly just waiting on the last custom animations to reach the last missing 1%. With three scenes in total as well as a bunch of new maps and sprites, there' been quite a lot of work put in it, including working 2+ hours per map for 4-5 minutes scenes. But hey, I'm a perfectionist, and I like making maps.

But now, I'm starting to wonder if I haven't bitten off more than I can chew considering the scale of what's left to do. I have less than half the time remaining until the next release, and I still have all of Lily's quest to do, an extra scene, and a bunch of freeroam and mini-stories. I pray that I'll be able to release everything by the 18th of this month, but there's a possibility I might need a few extra days to make sure I can add everything I want. Still, I'll work hard so it doesn't come to that.

So back to work!

What if you released the Update as it is after doing the extra scene, the freeroams and the mini-stories, and then worked on Lily's story in the next Update? You already have 3 scenes for the Update and this way you could also do a proper quest for Leto where he comes back from captivity because last week you said that you only did a short event for him where only Cyanna acknowledges his return. I know that you planned on working on the Main Story in the next Update and believe me when i say that it's hard for me to speak against recieving new scenes for Rose, but after this Update, Lily will be so far behind compared to the other 3 girls that you could spend an entire Update on her and she still won't be ahead any of them, not to mention the new Barmaid who we barely even got the chance to see.

Hhmmm, to be honest, I'd like to keep the pace as I've done so far for Haylen and Lily, both of them in a single update, and not have one update focus solely on a side-character. I've just started Lily's quest for this update and laid out a rough plan of what I wanted to do with it, so we'll see how it goes. It shouldn't take as long as Haylen's.

Release the update when it's finished. It's better to put out complete content than unfinished. Fulfill at least the bare minimum of your intended content for this update and release it once it's ready. Remember that you were sick for a recently which has put the game out of whack in terms of what time of the month you usually deliver it. Give yourself an extra week or two, balance out the schedule a bit, take some stress off yourself. Remember that you are one person and you should not be pushing yourself too hard just to get the update out "on time". You are far more punctual than the vast majority of patreon funded projects. We can all wait an extra week or two.

Thank you for the kind message! I don't really want to aim for the bare minimum, otherwise I'm pretty sure I could release it on time. Also, I can't really use my past illness as an excuse, it's more about trying to put too much content into Haylen's sidequest and then realizing it took a bit too long to complete compared to the time I have until release. As I said, if I need 2-3 days more, I'll take them, but I've always prided myself in my relative punctuality, so I'd really like to have this one out on time as well : )

Shorter scenes - more action is the way to go. You're very creative but since there are a lot of small things that you have to accomplish making it tighter rather than expanding on it will bring you focus and save time.

Actually, shorter but more scenes is more time consuming overall, but I find it easier to do. When I write long H scenes, I always lose inspiration towards the end.

When I say "bare minimum" what I mean is the idea that you decide what the update absolutely needs and you go with that as what you have to do before releasing and then release when you're done. Quite often in game development you have to choose between meeting a deadline with all the content you intended or meeting the deadline with as much content as you could get finished with as high a level of quality as possible. When I say "bare minimum" I mean you might have to leave out some of the embellishments. Maybe delay a side story until the next release or have a piece or two of placeholder artwork. Stuff that will be done sooner rather than later, but was not necessarily a requirement for the update to feel complete.

Who can, indeed?^^ Don't worry, I rest plenty. Working when I'm tired ends up in a mess of janky dialogue and dumb mistakes anyway, which ends up taking as much time to fix as if I'd rested instead, so I keep a proper balance.

Yep! Side-stories and freeroams are always left at the end anyway, so I can adapt the amount I can make based on the time I have left, so I'll see how much I can get done by the 18th before making a decision whether I need 2-3 more days or not.

In general I do like your decision to focus on shorter but more scenes. This way you should be able to show the corruption process of each LI in a way more detailed manner. This is a big plus in my books, cause when I remember HC 1 and 2 despite not really lacking scenes, somehow the corruption process was too fast paced for me and important pieces were missing here and there. Focussing more on shorter but multiple events should really picture the whole process much more. On the other hand there are certain important scenes where I do hope the scene itself wont get rushed. Maybe as a rule of thumb you could go one long scene after five short scenes or something along the line. In the end variety not only within the content (situation, location,...) but also within the overall design of the scene (length, camera angle, transitions,...) is important as well. Overall I gotta say, I am pretty impressed with HC3 so far. Especially the creativity of the scenes so far (Rose's banquet dance, Jazon's way of corrupting Haylen,...) has really gotten into me. Only the story is imo too much in the focus of the game again (especially in the last update). Thats why I hope that investing into more shorter scenes will really emphasize a stronger focus on the corruption progress and the lewd content. But really, thumbs up, you have done a great job so far N_Taii. And I think it really shows... ;) All the best for the future development!! Looking forward for where the journey goes!

Thanks for the feedback! I will definitely make bigger scenes if I feel like they are relevant enough to be made longer. What I meant by doing shorter scenes was actually not dragging them for longer than I feel necessary, as I tended to do before. I may not do one bigger scene per x amount of smaller scenes as you suggested, but some scenes are definitely more important steps in the girls' corruption, so they'll be worked on more. As for the story, there are different types of people with different wishes. I've had some who were disappointed by the lack of story progression in Update 4, while I know you liked it. That's why I'm trying to balance it out with updates which are bigger on story, and others which have more scenes. In the end, it is important I progress the story too, because the whole corruption hinges on it. : )

thanks for your reply pal and the Pol of course ;) actually I would love to see what the people here think. I dont know you could do some interactive poll maybe? Two choices (keeping it simple): "Too much story"/"more lewd" or "too much lewd"/"more story". I really would be interested in how your community feels. Are you not eager to find out yourself? Just from reading over at the other forum I got the illusion that the choice will be very clear in favor for more lewd and less story... but maybe I'm wrong. Lets find out, science might not be every riddles solution, but it surely is the farest we get. But if its you who wants to focus that much on the story thats a whole different thing of course. And obviously you would do best to stay true to yourself. I am just asking cause you stated it as if its a decision based on a certain percentage of people wanting to see story over lewd. Thats why I wanted to really clarify whether thats the right picture you got, cause really, I dont think so ;)

Actually, there's also part of me that likes to have a certain amount of story in my games. Having too much of one thing, in this case H scenes, tends to feel a bit repetitive after a while, and if I want to keep going for many years more, I have to diversify my workload a little bit too. Besides, I'm more invested in the game if it has a story. It's the same reason why I like to make maps for things that wouldn't necessarily need it, because I can concentrate on something else that isn't dialogue or game mechanics : )
