I had always been under the impression that they had taught themselves discipline, or at the very least that Aya had introduced the concepts to Chihaya. What I feel Ken actually means is they don’t always (or ever) follow those ideas, such as resurfacing BEFORE they feel the need to breathe, not blindly exploring new wrecks, etc.

Also, it seems Ken is a bit biased against Saki, unless he plans on also coaching her.
