The human eye contains three types of photosensitive receptors called cones.
One type of cone is most sensitive to short-wavelength light (blue and violet), another to medium wavelengths (green and yellow), and a third to long wavelengths (orange and red).

Green lies in the zone where cones are most active, making it pleasing to the eye and easy to distinguish.
