Chapter 8
-VB-
Cory Andrews was the Earl of Radstadt.
However, his title meant very little because Radstadt was also the heart of the Rasalhague Military District, and any significant decision thus fell into the hands of Tai-sho Ivan Sorenson and his aide Sho-sho Sven Johannsen.
And what were significant decisions?
Anything more important than who to send to collect taxes or which town got to increase their commercial fishing tonnage.
Despite the fact that he was only an Earl in name and more of a baron in truth, he was allowed an Earl’s retinue of mechwarriors.
However, none of that made him feel good when Luthien sent no notice of raids or help when he and his people sat in the heart of the Free Rasalhague movement which saw terrorists attacks almost on a weekly basis as of last year.
Hell, he didn’t even have policing rights on his own world!
He let out a dejected sigh.
But this was how he served the Coordinator. He kept to the civilian side and anything related to military and security was handled by Warlord Sorenson.
Cory moved to pick up another paper to see what this one was about.
“Lord Andrews, a message from the Office of the Warlord is here,” his servant outside the room announced.
He paused and set the paper aside. “Send them in.”
The paper doors slid open and a man in the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery uniform came in and bowed.
“Speak.”
“Observatories have found signs of jumps, Lord Andrews. There may be a raid landing on Radstadt as we speak.”
Cory froze before he relaxed. “I see. Thank you for alerting me. I -.”
Alarms rang out.
He snapped up. Alarms shouldn’t be ringing if there wasn’t a direct attack on the city. If it -.
He whirled around and then froze as he looked out of his office windows.
“What the fuck?”
Because how else was he supposed to react to a bunch of giant reptiles gliding down towards the edge of his city?
Then he saw pops of black and white smokes all around the edges and within the city. He watched as shells flew over the skies and then struck at the gargantuan monstrosities… and did absolutely nothing to the monsters.
And then the draconic monsters opened their mouths and spews of monsters jumped out.
“May the kamikaze save us…” he muttered.
As the last of the tiny creatures (from this distance) spilled out of the draconic monsters, they kept their maws open but turned them towards the outer edge of the city.
Light gathered at the center of their maws and then -.
Fire.
The very air caught on fire and exploded away. He could see the shockwaves as they traveled across the city. The very lights that had been gathering at their maws cut a swath into the countryside, and everywhere they touched, the landscape exploded like in a nuclear explosion.
And then the windows shattered and showered him and everyone in the room with their shrapnels.

On Zdice, Karcist Croy hummed as the invasion of Radstadt began.
Or as he preferred to think of it in his head, the Cleansing of Radstadt.
It was on Radstadt that he first appeared in this universe, and where he began his first charity work.
But his charity was considered “not good enough” and his people were gunned down by the ISF. It was there that he vowed revenge against the Kuritans.
‘We’ll strike at Luthien in due time,’ he thought as he watched the attack unfolding through the eyes of the void dragons. ‘But Radstadt falls to me now.’
The void dragons unleashed their helfire upon the defenders at the edge of the city, and everything blew away from the explosion. Through the warped vision of the void dragons which could detect life, Croy watched tens of thousands of lives get snuffed out in the non-nuclear explosion and felt nothing.
No, that was a lie.
He felt satisfaction. The monsters who killed his followers, his people, were finally getting what they deserved.
But he also knew that the regular, ordinary people had … not “no liability” but certainly “least liability.” They would pay off their debt to him and his Priesthood either through work or “donations.”
But the military? The soldiers, the police, the officers, and the administrators? All of them were going to be put down like the dogs they were. They deserved no mercy, not after the horrors they put his people through.
One of the void dragons turned and saw the Japanese-styled castle at the heart of the city.
“Destroy it.”
And dragon opened its maw, and instead of the intense helfire, it spat out smaller embers, which were the size of Locusts.
Those embers flew across the sky above the city before slamming into the castle and setting it on fire.
Good.
All symbols of the Draconis Combine, the Coordinator, and their precious culture had to be eradicated and reviled.
As for his orins in their biomechs, they moved with alacrity and speed of people who knew their jobs. That was good. All of the mechwarrior knowledge and memories they extracted from raiders were being put to good use.
“I want the planet under my control within the week.”
The orins responded through their connection to him.
And their response…
“Your will be done.”

A/N: funny how Karcist and the Earl just happened to have very similar names. Didn’t even know the guy’s name until I clicked on Earl of Radstadt to write this chapter.
