I think what the author of Mushoku Tensei wants to convey to the reader throughout the story, is that even if you've done wrong in the past it is still possible to gradually become a better person. It might not be intentional, but the way this episode comes off to me, is that even if a person is surrounded by people trying to help them, ultimately the choice to move on is made by themselves. There won't be some magical person that comes along and convinces you to improve your life, its a choice you have to take yourself.
