In my Opinion the D clan is the decendants of Joyboy¨s crew. If we assume that Joyboy had a similar size crew to Luffy 10-12. And so far in the anime, the D clan has 8 known family names. -Monkey -Trafalgar, -Nefertari, -Marshall, - Portgas, -Jaguar -Gol, -Rocks. + one I believe you will learn later. So 9 currently known family lineages! And I believe that the D is just to recognize friend from foe similar to when in Alabasta the straw hats and Vivi had the X to seperate friend from foe (Mr.2 Bon Clay) Also there is a theory that Lily, founded Amazon Lily when running away from the Imu after scattering the Poneglyphs around the world with the Paw-Paw fruit. ( which I find funny because an old One Piece theory stated that Vivi would eat the Paw -Paw fruit If Kuma died.)

In the manga, male Celestial Dragons are referred to with the suffix “-sei” (聖), while female Celestial Dragons use “-guu” (宮). Since Imu is called “Imu-sei” (イム聖) by the Five Elders, this would suggest that Imu is male. However, given how mysterious their nature is, anything is possible. We'll see!
