Ironically, given that I spend half my life on the internet, I often forget how bloody spectacular it can be - desensitised to the wonders of the world wide web gradually over 29 years.

Today was an awesome reminder of its brilliance.

Yesterday,  I was sitting in a Steak restaurant owned by my good friend Isao-san in a remote corner of Yamagata prefecture, when he brought out this photo of Dwayne the Rock Johnson, to show off his passing resemblance to one of his idols.

I snapped a photo and shared it on Twitter before going to bed, thinking it'd be a laugh - although ultimately expecting nothing to come of it.

And yet to my surprise this afternoon, despite my lack of faith, incredibly we got a response from the man himself!

It's times like this I'm delighted I ended up using Twitter.

- It's also a fantastic reminder of the football/soccer metaphor,  "If you don't shoot, you don't score."

Because it was actually my friend's idea to upload the photo to Twitter and tag the Rock and I initially shrugged it off - before ultimately going ahead with it and caving in, after they went on about it for ten minutes.

The end result:

Isao-san got a shoutout from his hero on the other-side of the world, and I got called "CB" by a man I've been watching on TV and films for almost 20 years now! And who knows, perhaps one day in the future when the Rock is in Japan promoting a movie (which he often is), he might just stop by in Yamagata to meet his Japanese doppelgänger.

Crazy. But wonderful.

(And if you're ever in the neighbourhood, check out his restaurant.

Amongst the best beef in north Japan!)

Wow!! That's pretty exciting Chris! Maybe he might do a quick cameo on your video during his next trip to Japan. Even if not, never hurts to give a shot!

That's dope! Congrats on bringing attention to your friend's restaurant. I'd be over the moon too if I was Isao-san. Hopefully, Mr. Johnson will follow through accordingly and actually come visit Isao-san's spot next time he's in Japan.

Congratulations! (I hope you remembered to reply in your excitement?)

Jette Nielsen

That's so awesome Chris! I get super happy and excited whenever you reply to one of my comments so I can only imagine how cool it must have felt to be called CB by The Rock! I feel like we should all start calling you CB from now on👍😙

Shannon Sweetser

So rad that the internet could bring together two such men with smoldering gazes together. Your work is done for the week, unless you're posting another video this week in which case, do that.

António Dias

That is so awesome! You may have just help his dream come true!

It would be awesome if Isao-San did meet Dwayne Johnson, that would be awesome. and it's cool that Mr Johnson noticed this too. :)

Aw, that’s brilliant ! It’s a real thrill to get a response from a hero. I tweeted Clare Balding a link to a review I had written of one of her books, and got a lovely reply. National treasure. Like The Rock. Well done. I’m glad you gave in, and chose kind. Making people happy is the best buzz in the world. (I am reminded of Natsuki, writing that. Pretty sure that’s up there in his philosophy. Although ciggies might be a bigger buzz.)

That's too funny!

so cool, it must feel like an honour to get given a nickname by the Rock, if I were you I would ask your friends from now on to start calling you by your 'the Rock' nickname something like "wat's happenin CB!". I would demand it or otherwise de-friend immediately

This is awesome. Love the new nickname, CB
