For those of you who've listened to me drone on forever about wanting to make a cinematic video in Tokyo at night ("LIKE BLADE RUNNER INNIT"), you'll be shocked and surprised to learn I finally did it.

A couple of nights ago I was in Shinjuku for dinner with my good friend and fellow night time photography enthusiast Victor (better known as Frame of Travel: https://www.instagram.com/frameoftravel/).

As we wandered through town with our cameras, the rain illuminating the bustling streets, I knew taking photos wouldn't be enough and instead ended up filming our 2 hour stroll through town. This was the end result!

My dream would be to do this but on a much bigger scale - ideally 20 minutes long and set in Osaka with a character and a loose narrative.

Hopefully somewhere in between the upcoming Journey Across Japan series and Natsuki documentary we can make that happen in the next couple of months.

But for now enjoy the video. And as a hidden Easter Egg, see if you can hear Natsuki's iconic phrase muttered in the background....

P.S. If you missed the Patreon vlog on Friday, I bought a Game Boy! But why?! Find out here: https://youtu.be/aTQCWxEeuqE

SHINJUKU AFTER DARK | Tokyo in 4k

Shinjuku, Tokyo at night. There's nowhere else quite like it. I found myself wandering through it two nights ago and couldn't resist grabbing my camera and filming the streets. Special thanks to Victor (Frame of Travel) for being my impromptu model! ► https://www.instagram.com/frameoftravel/

Thank you, Chris, that hit the spot. The music makes it too 🌃

so awesome!

Cool. I’ve always wanted to do type like that for a video, with the bold red on the blue night, like Hong Kong action movies of the past. I still have a huge “Hard Boiled” movie poster with that style. It looked like there was just a little drone footage—is that right? If so, was that an issue in the city?

Chris ! You made it ! Awesome !

Luis Pais

Oh I would love to see the 20 min version of this!

Dave Morrison

That is awesome. Beautifully shot. Love the music and the editing. I wouldn't mind trying this in London at night.... Though after 10 mins of filming I wouldn't have a camera anymore and probably a lot of stitches

Argus9 (Jonathan)

That crossing light chirp was a nice touch for the soundtrack. Very cool!

Storm

This is amazing!

LudicDave

Looks awesome. I wish some of the shots had a bit more film grain to them, but it still looks good. If this was the opening to a Netflix show, I'm watching the rest of the episode.

Really atmospheric. I didn’t notice that the fog was a video effect on the first watch. Parts were a bit wobbly, was that intentional or just lack of the right gear?

abroadinjapan

Intentional! Though I’m hindsight it may have been better to stabilize them. I often prefer the handheld look though.

abroadinjapan

Wouldn’t be Japan without it! All of the other sound effects were commercials for iconic Japanese brands that I found online - certainly made quite the difference!

abroadinjapan

The S1H is so good at low light that there’s almost no grain, haha. I had to add some in during post (Filmconvert plugin). I agree, could have done with more though!

This is fucking GORGEOUS, Chris. 💜 Really and truly; you have full on cinema film potential. I'd honestly not be surprised if in a while we see you as a film director on big named films at some point. Just fucking brilliant quality and attention to detail and lighting. 💜

Laura Beaumont

That’s so cool. Looks like that game Cyber Punk 2077. I thought that guy was you with a wig haha!

I've been obsessed with the original Blade Runner for years. Obsessed. I'm glad you talk about it from time to time. Makes me happy. Nice job Chris!

Ryori

Blade Runner montage of Shinjuku, opening with a video game-esque scene of fog. The seemingly endless confluence of signs, neons and movement of people alluding to the possibility of the unexpected encounter which can be had in Shinjinku. Makes me want to go...

I've never seen a film with such a richly developed world. The attention to detail in the set design is absolutely astonishing!

You're absolutely correct and I'm glad you're a real fan of it. I'm sure it has given you a tremendous amount of inspiration. Maybe you've seen it but if you haven't, you should check out the documentary for it called "Dangerous Days." Also, the one and only fantastic Blade Runner podcast called "Shoulder of Orion." It's on Spotify. They were able to meet with Daryl Hannah (Zora), Hampton Fancher, and other individuals of the same importance. They're pretty legit and passionate about the subject. They also talk about older popular famous films and new ones. There is also a short film called "Slice of Life". They have their own website called "slice of life" where you can watch it along with how they made it on youtube. They constructed miniatures in their own garage. It's hard to fathom. My words don't do it justice. It's worth a watch. It is surely not a crappy short film I promise. I know you would get a kick out of how they made it. I could write a million words about Blade Runner but I'll spare you lol. I'm glad you understand the caliber and benchmark of the film. Take care Chris! Be safe.

A surprise Victor, and major Cyberpunk vibes?! What an excellent video. I can't wait to see more of this.

Lucca Saraiva

I want more Chris! This was awesome!

Seek83

This is so Epic especially for me who grew up in the "golden áge" of Cyberpunk Aka 80th XD

Amelia

don't know how I missed this vid, this is so cool! can imagine you making some awesome techno music videos

Cathy

This is so cool! Reminds me of Cyberpunk 2077 which I didn't play yet, because I got no PS5 until today and maybe never have one ... (there is a rest of hope, but I'm sure I won't get it before middle of next year ...) I'm sure you can realise your dream to do a little movie in Osaka! Keep on and you will do it sooner, if you thought ;)
