Hey guys,
Hope you've had an amazing start to July so far!

But for the love of god, I hope none of you are coming to Japan this summer - this heat is an absolute joke. Every time I step outside I feel like I'm being bloody flame grilled 😅

Got a really fun new video up today though to kick off the summer!

You may recall a few years back I did a documentary on Kyoto's disappearing townhouses which are sadly dying out. I interviewed a friendly local entrepreneur called Koji Maeda and he told us about how and why he'd decided to renovate decrepit, crumbling homes across the city.

In this follow up, we examine WHY people aren't choosing to renovate these old townhouses. A stone we alluded to, but mostly left unturned in the previous outing.

We're joined by my cheeky American friend and Japan real estate expert Alex Shapiro as we wander through a collapsing property, that feels like a movie set out of the movie the Grudge.

Enjoy the video though guys and in case you missed the Patreon Exclusive Q&A a few days ago, you can watch that here as well!

I’ve been in Japan since the end of of may, no kidding about the heat. At least there’s actual air conditioning here compared to back home in the uk.

Janne

How hot is it there during the summer? Me and my boyfriend plans to come to Japan in July in 2025. (Have started saving, we are going to Okinawa, Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo for 3 weeks) we are going to be traveling from Norway 🇳🇴

Soph

At least Japan has air conditioning... I'm going to Germany at the weekend and it's set to be 30°c upwards, and not many places have aircon... Luckily I made sure the hotel has it, though!!

You are not going to harsh my Japanese high. My partner and I are determined to buy a Kyoto Manchia and adopt a Shiba Inu (already named snakku.chan) when we move out there in September and you can’t stop us 😝😂

Oh, wonderful. I arrive in Tokyo on the 14th of August! Given that I'm Scottish and get sunburnt opening the fridge, this can only go well :)

Well, i'm going to Japan this weekend. But I'm going to spend almost all the time in Hokkaido. I usually go on vacation in autumn, but this year it ended up being summer. So I thought i'd be a good opportunity to go to Hokkaido, since it's the only place with comfortable temperatures in Japan in summer, and in autumn it's already too cold for comfort.

Good to hear about the heat, flying to Japan tomorrow morning!

Half a million to refurb a house with all those risks, yikes!

Haha, in Japan right now. Wanted to go in October but didn't get permission from work, so I thought it's now or never.

Chris, I could probably Google this, but what were Machiya called before modern times? Like what was the style referred to as in the 1800s and prior? If anything other than just "that kind of building we all make". Since Machiya is "traditional wooden house", I thought there would be a contemporary word for them then.
