So after many months of dread, wondering how the Abroad in Japan studio could possibly be moved between Sendai and Tokyo, we now have our answer.

Not only did it survive the journey, but it's been hugely upgraded - at least TWICE the size.

Yesterday, the team finished wiring up the several dozen neon lights, signs and TV's scattered throughout, and the end result is a stunning, immersive set of streets that feel like a natural extension of the previous Sendai set.

From Natsuki's hair salon shopfront, to a 1970's inspired Japanese living room and a greatly expanded electronic store, with more moveable walls to ensure we can shoot in every corner.

Here's a few shots of the new set, including our model (and one of the editing team) Dave and we'll be following it up with a video here on Patreon later in the week!

But that's not the only news...meet me below the photos!

All in all, the set designers have blown my expectations out of the water once again. As you'll soon discover, the attention to detail is absolutely absurd yet again!

The 1970's house has a rather impressive roof on it, which is bonkers considering it'll rarely be in shot. They essentially built half a house inside a building (the office). Wild, haha.

But the second piece of very BIG NEWS is that after 5 years of recording the Abroad in Japan Podcast audio only, we've decided the time has come to release it on Youtube.

Not only that, but we're going to film every episode and release it on a brand new channel, originally titled "The Abroad in Japan Podcast."

I think at this point, the question is not so much why but what took you so long?!
As I've stated in the past, filming complicates things a bit more and the appeal for me, has been that the Podcast doesn't get in the way of the videos.

But I think it's an issue I've overplayed, given that filming the Podcast isn't really much of a stretch, and we're well placed to pull it off, given our experience recording on opposite sides of the world for 5 years and the new set to use as a backdrop.

Hell, even Pete has been working on his backdrop and it's looking good.
But fundamentally, it's been a shame that so many folks simply don't discover the podcast, due to its absence on Youtube. We hope this'll help grow our audience, without us needing to change the format that's been pretty popular this last half decade.

It's also a very good opportunity to put the set to good use! I'm still working out where to film between the ramen shop and the house - open to your ideas!

And of course, for those of you happy to continue with audio-only, we'll still be on the same platforms as before.

On a final note, I realise July was a fairly quiet month for videos guys, especially given how busy May and June were, but rest assured, August will be an amazing month for videos.

We've got a Q&A video shot in a convenience store out later this week, followed by our epic Mount Fuji climb with Natsuki, a long awaited documentary about a ryokan and even a brand new Wacky Weekend being shot tomorrow.

It's going to be a great summer!
And of course, the Abroad in Japan book is FINALLY out this week. Somehow, everyone in Germany seems to have already got their hands on it, haha.

But I really hope you enjoy the book! Apologies for promoting it everywhere recently, but naturally I want it to do well. I'm the master of failing to promote things from this Patreon and the Podcast, to the merchandise. It's not an error I plan to make with the book!

See you in the week!
Chris

Looks great! I am so glad that you are doing a filmed podcast on YouTube. And having that set will make it fun and allow you to change things up a bit. I got a suspicious email from the UK telling me some Chris guy was sending me a book. It was before my coffee. So I should be reading it soon!

Tonberry

While I always buy the physical books sometimes I just like having the audio book to listen too while I’m working or driving and don’t have time to sit and read. I was hoping there would be an audio version, but also I was hoping it would be either Chris or Conner to do the narration!

April Gutierrez

The addition of Natsuki's shop is a wonderful touch! And hey, your book is #1 in Japan Travel on Amazon U.S.'s Kindle store!

abroadinjapan

That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know. And Natsuki will be delighted to see he's finally a part of the set no doubt, haha

Javier Furus

Congratulations Chris on everything! The upgraded set is absolutely stunning and mount Fuji is an amazing achievement. Can't wait to get my hands on your book, I hope I can grab it from Hungary. Also great news on the podcast, I am a long time fan. Have you thought of also taking advantage of Spotify's video feature for podcasts, uploading the episodes with videos there as well? I bet people would love that too!

Astor Reinhardt

I just got notified of my book order shipping yesterday. Looking forward to reading it! I gotta say the new living room set looks amazing. I kept wanting to zoom in even more to see all the detail! Can't wait till the tour of the studio video drops :D

Sarah Hall

I think you'll absolutely grow the audience for the podcast by having it on YouTube too. I for one often find myself forgetting to listen to the episodes as they come out, just because it's on a different platform. The new studio looks amazing!! And excited for my copy of the book to arrive.

Bob Rose

So your Podcast moving to YT means we see MORE of your ugly mush. There should be a law...

Ilyas

I'm a massive fan of the podcast so glad to hear you're doing this to help bring more people to listen/watch it. It's honestly a great podcast and fun to listen too.

Camilla Fontana

Wow this is amazing, I am so looking forward to it! And having the podcast on youtube will definitely help me remind to listen to it more! Also, yesterday I got the mail that my preorder of your book is on the way, saying that I am excited is an understatement! I have to admit, yours is the first book from a youtuber I buy, I've never really been interested in those kind of books, but if there is someone who I want to learn more of, that's you! So I am so looking forward to it!

Soph

Exciting times ahead!

Joey B

Hahah I can relate to the suspicious mail. Almost deleted it, wondering why my mail didn't send it to spam....

Peter Varga

you should find a different spot in the set to film the podcast every week! do it once even from the rooftop!

Young Padu1

Sugoi‼️ Congrats Chris 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Luke Beaman

The set is looking amazing with its new extensions, love that you're finally doing the podcast as video too. Lots of new videos on the way and a book to drop in my lap any day - exciting times indeed!

Nynke de Haas

It all looks so awesome! And it's fun to see Ken peering in again as well 😄. I'd prefer podcasts shot in the tatami room! That'll fit best with the homey feel the podcast usually has.

Satomi Arihara

That Japanese living room reminds me of my childhood. The placement of the TV, the tea chest, and the kotatsu are exactly the same as my parents' house😆

Amanda Hayward

It all looks amazing Chris 😍. I can't wait for the tour. I like how you've managed to include Natsuki's shop front. Good luck with your book, I can't wait to receive it

Katie McQuin

It looks amazing, can't believe how quickly that's come together (or at least that's how it seems from the outside!) Looking forward to the next vids 😃

Ignace

Awesome Chris! Been a long time YouTube follower and finally joined your Patreon last week. I’m so happy to see you and your channel growing so well. Thank you for all the amazing work you do!!

abroadinjapan

It might be one of the first youtuber books that isn’t ghost written as well 😅 Though during the six month writing process I started to wish it had been

Alexander Skogberg

Great news! I really enjoyed the one (it was just one right?) that you did.

Philippe Gosselin

I love the podcast but can't listen to it while I work. Having it on YouTube means I will listen to it. I'm happy to hear that. And the studio looks amazing

Etienne Sharp

The new set looks amazing. Think YT for the podcast is the way to go too (it's the only reason I watch Trash Taste - because it's right there and I don't need to go digging through podcast apps to find it) so that feels like a natural progression for AiJ.

Blex

TIL: I'm apparently the only Abroad in Japan fan in Germany who has not received the book yet 🥲

The Scrub

Studio looks amazing! The retro living room is great. After seeing that for some weird reason I had to watch some shin Chan.

Eric Sison

The set looks great and will be a great backdrop to the podcast! Long time podcast listener; will be glad to see the Frenchman plane reviewer finally get some face time again on an Abroad channel.

Alexander Boderke

I live in Germany but did not get the book delivered yet. But i am sure it´s worth waiting. Amazing studio btw

Fluffyspark7

This looks great! I can’t wait to see the video when it drops!

Bergkattse

The preview of the new Takeshi’s Castle just dropped on YouTube. Screw Spartan Games you gotta get on that show!

RayRay

So cool!

Wesley Haines

I'm a big fan of doing the podcast in the living room. But I'd imagine the ramen bar would be much more comfortable.

Samantha Ward

When does the first podcast YouTube ep go up?

Acrosicious

Finally a place to get my hair done in Tokyo!

kigf

The studio looks awesome 👍

Wade Martin

Just received the book today! Looking forward to reading it!
