A lot of the questions you have are gonna answered in the VN so I don't wanna spoil it lol. Super hyped to see you tackle the entire novel, been loving the Umineko playthrough and Fate is just as good so it'll be exciting

Excited for Fate/Stay Night! Just to be clear - Fate/Zero is written by Gen Urobuchi (author of also Madoka and Psycho-Pass) while Fate/Stay Night is written by Nasu. While Urobuchi formed his script around the groundwork that Nasu laid, there is definitely a big distinction between the two (not saying that one is better than the other - just different). And honestly it's deserves to be mentioned that not only author, but Madoka and Fate/Zero also shares the same composer (if that wasn't already obvious, for me I can barely distinguish between soundtracks of the two series). Regarding your lingering questions... Let's just say that yeah you're not really supposed to understand what was happening, I think for now it was summed up nicely by Gilgamesh: "When I regained my flesh within that ooze, perhaps you were trapped in some sort of nonsense of your own". Basically, stuff happened, go read the VN :D That being said, I don't think it will hurt your experience if you get to distance yourself a bit from Fate/Zero before tackling the VN, as you are not really supposed to watch Zero first (though you could argue that either one will spoil the other), and the better you can be in the mindset of a clueless first timer the better - so having to wait a bit to find a suitable time slot might be a blessing in disguise.

If you end up going the VN route download the Realta Nua version. It combines all 3 routes plus the voice acting and all that. Its a little like the o7th mod in a way for Umineko. Just don't accidentally add the H scenes back into the game cuz the mod does allow you to do that lol.

Also I will say It's not at all as long as Umineko. Umineko is like 3 or 4 times longer as a VN maybe more. Fate/Stay night is a lot more manageable.
