Holy moly, they butchered the characters. Like you said, I also wouldn't have minded a death note-like story with different characters, because obviously a 1:1 adaptation but 'murica wouldn't have worked either (still would've been MUCH preferable though even if they half-assed it). I remember seeing Willem Dafoe being casted for the role of Ryuk, thinking he would be the PERFECT fit for that role (still is) and that the adaptation might actually be worth watching from that alone - until I saw the reviews :D What made the original death note good is, well there is several aspects, but the characters is sure one of them. The fact that you could immediately tell about pretty much every single character that they were off-character is testament to how well written they were in the original - and Light was arguably the most interesting character in the series, and they reduced him to this. So much is wrong from the very get-go. Light is a straight-laced perfect honor student who aced the national test, not some delinquent who's doing other people's homework for money - never mind the fact that it would go against his morals, it would just be beneath him. Messy room? Wrong. Crybaby and awkward? Wrong. Angsty teen? Well, yeah kinda, but at least he would pretend otherwise. Honestly this was so bad, I hated almost everything about it, and I wonder along with you who the heck this was meant for. That being said it was a fun change of pace to have a trainwreck as a watch-along, and also you shitting on it, calling Light a dumb idiot or a little bitch kind of made it into a fun experience instead of just head-scratching and misery. Actually makes me want to see you react to Cross Ange even more (another trainwreck, but an exquisite one). Anyway, excited for the next react series, whichever will be win the vote!
