The medics are NOT the ones doing religious services. Those are chaplains. They are officers, and are actual clergymen who join the military to perform services for the servicemembers. They also used to wear the red cross that medics wore. No one wears them anymore, and medics have carried rifles now for decades.

Just like much of the show, Speirs’ actual charge was much longer and even crazier than what was depicted — it’s incredible how much he accomplished during his military career. He was truly a real-life action hero (who did a little bit of war crimes). Also, Dyke has an interesting real-life story. He successfully defended a position and was wounded during it, either in Normandy or Holland, so he wasn’t a complete failure. During the attack on Foy, he was actually wounded during the charge without realizing it, which explains why he was so out of it and needed Speirs to take over. Personally, based on everything I’ve seen and read, I think Dyke was a poor commander overall even if he had 1 or 2 successes that lead to him taking over Easy. He seems to have received favorable reports and been promoted due to connections higher up (like it was mentioned in the episode by Lip). Maybe that earlier defense was just a fluke, and the rest of his time with Easy Company ultimately revealed his true capability as a leader, because all of the guys from Easy had alot to say about him, and it cant just be all made up because nearly every story about him correlates.
