Firefly 1x5 | Watch Along

Probably my least favourite episode; Mal is just a little too much of an asshole and the village folk are jarring even for a show like this. It doesn't scream "thought-out". Still, the flashbacks are very good and I really love Jayne's absurdity. Sean Maher who plays Simon is given the bulk of dramatics to deal with in this episode and he comes across as dorkily endearing while also carrying a visible steel and capability. Episode belongs to him, of course.

*So* accurate about Jayne, maybe that's why he was my favorite character on first watch--in a way he's the semi-feral 'pet' of the group, always good for a line, not much going on upstairs, with just a hint of human complexity ('the man they call Jayne,' the hat) for contrast.

No one caught a young Zack Efron playing as the young Doc?

Anybody else using Plex to watch this? It's so annoying that they tag the episodes and thumbnails using the original television airing order instead of the correct DVD order. Can't figure out how to fix it.

Please start Dexter at some point I think the ladies would like it a lot ☺️

I love Dexter, I would never subject anyone to seasons 3, 5,6,7,8, of the show. There are plenty of shows that I love but I would never suggest a reaction channel to watch every episode of.

I guess I viewed Mal’s actions in this one a little differently…Not saying he’s not an ass, he definitely is…but he had two problems, and one seemed much more pressing: Book’s bleeding bullet wound. If it was true that Hillfolk were trying to kidnap trades people, that probably meant they were not usually going to be eager to kill them, so Simon and River likely (barring any religious hysteria) were not in as much danger. Meanwhile, Mal deciding to go to an Alliance cruiser (which even he recoiled at at first) also showed that when it was life and death…the life of Book was more important to him than his pride. And to a degree, like Simon, Mal isn’t necessarily fond of Book yet…Mal’s post-religion viewpoint had already come up a couple of times as he needled Book about God and faith. But life mattered more to him. Anyways, I still love the final shot of this episode “Home”, with the entire group, no matter what they think of each other, sitting down for a friendly meal in their home…something we never saw in Simon’s flashbacks of his own home. It took me a few watching to catch the importance of that final, extended, closing shot without any dialogue.

He cares about his crew above all. One of his crew was dying, and it forced him to make a choice. As soon as that was resolved, he went to find his other missing crew. Mal is many things, sassy and rude among them, but a love for those he's responsible for is chief among them.
