Should we still bother with the Heart Overlay? (Patreon)

So, you've probably seen the heart overlay at some point. 

It's a mechanism for visually representing how far you are in a given heroine's route...and it also represents love!

Anyway, is this a thing which in any way enhances your gameplay experience, or should we just get rid of it?
