Culture note... The eight characters are based on Chinese horoscope. You know how Western horoscope has 12 sun signs, but then you also have a moon sign and a rising sign. So, you could be like a Sagittarius with Leo as your moon and Scorpio as rising. (Making this up, because I am not super au fait with the details of horoscoping.) Chinese horoscopes work the same way. Most people know that there are 12 animals and each animal represents a year. But there are also elements. So, you get a Rooster once every 12 years, but not all roosters are the same. You have a fire rooster, water rooster, earth rooster, air rooster and a metal rooster. Combining the elements with yin/yang energy, you get 10 possible elements. You get an element character and an animal character for your birthyear. Same for your birthmonth, your birthdate and your birth time. So, for example, my eight characters are 辛酉庚子丁卯壬寅. 辛酉is a metal rooster and represents my year, 庚子 is a metal rat and represents my month, 丁卯 is a fire rabbit and represents the date, and 壬寅 is a water tiger and represents the time. Just like Westerners use their detailed horoscope charts to predict their lives, presonalities and compatabilities, Taiwanese may use these 8 characters.
