And the creation of the hell-touched is finally revealed. Jeeeeeze took me long enough, eh? XD All things considered though, I'm pretty pleased with the way the bottom panel turned out, and I hope you're enjoying all this backstory! I didn't realize how much of chapter #3 would be devoted to it, but happy to get some of the mythology and history of this world on the page!

Just wondering if there's any chance of getting that bottom panel enlarged & sans text? That would make an AWESOME wallpaper!

Sometimes people fucking up is not such a bad thing. Without it we would never have the otp of Frost and Cinder!

I think I might get the hell-touched process now! When the hell-touched "die", that isn't really truly dying. The ambient magic Ciel carried over must infuse into them after picking them; the elemental exposure is the fusing of that kind of elemental magic to their soul. Given that can't be an easy process, it must be why they "die", or rather, must enter a comatose-like state wherein their body might be an empty vessel, not unlike a certain Magical Girl anime. Magic keeps the body fresh until the soul's processing is completed, and voila. Elemental magic-user. This would also explain why the idea of them going to Hell and back is in their minds: the magic comes from Ciel, so it must ALSO carry a touch of his memories. Specifically, his memories of BURNING, and that's likely being confused by the back of their heads for "going to Hell" while they're in that "dead" period. Regardless, it was a fun theory to throw out, whether or not I'm right. XD

This still doesnt explain why there is a literal hell-touched genocide going on tho...yes, we know one torched a village, but there had to be another incident or something, otherwise the whole "execute on sight without trial" thing still comes off as a bit extreme.

The cat's out of the bag, people!

I really like how you made the group photo in the last panel all cool colors without loosing what set each apart from the others! I feel like this is my first actual art feedback, lol.

Whoo! Cool.

That's a cool way to think of it! For my part, I think of it more that the fabric between these two worlds is thinnest when someone is dying/crossing over, particularly if the death is an elemental sort (burning, freezing, drowning etc.). The hell-touched and the burnt witches of Ciel's world cross paths while crossing between worlds and in essence the witches/unicorns/etc. lose their powers to the hell-touched.. Regardless, Hazel wasn't exactly counting on that part ;)

The hell-touched will discuss what's happening to them in the story, but I think we have a philosophical difference in regards to perspective on this front. Can I ask, is there an explanation that would make genocide less extreme to you? Has there ever been a reason in history that made sense? We don’t even really have to look to our history, because there are plenty of recent examples. Black Lives Matter is present day. As are the gay concentration camps in Chechnya. Rwanda - 1994. The Killing Fields of Cambodia - 1975-1979. To me personally, this isn’t unrealistic. People in power have never needed a reason to commit atrocities, and even if they gave one, there’s no reason good enough. In this fictional world, the reason is, ‘they’re powerful and dangerous.’ In the real world, any reason seems to fly.

I find it interesting that the recently confirmed fire-touched lady isn't in the lineup.
