Our new series returns! PTFO is back with another notorious TTRPG from yesteryear, and today my players and I are sampling the 40-year-old vintage... of Toon. A role-playing game designed to let you experience classic cartoons. Toon's neat for a few reasons:

(a) It might be the first dedicated comedy RPG ever written

(b) It's designed around PvP action, but remains super approachable

And (c) the golden rule is "act before you think." (Which might be good advice for playing most RPGs, to be honest.)

Can you see our character sheets? You bet your pencils you can. The trove of images for this episode, including some excerpts from the Toon .pdf, can be found here.

As always, if you're not sure how to get access to your personal Quinns Quest Patreon podcast RSS feed, you can find instructions right here. Please don't share your private podcast feed outside of the Patreon. Instead, share the public podcast feed, which can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, Amazon Music and Castbox. Just like with Jorune, the first episode of this season is out now on the public feed, but later episodes of the season will only be found on the Quinns Quest Patreon.

And for those of you waiting impatiently for the next big Quinns Quest video review? I love your enthusiasm! I'm happy to say that by the time we've wrapped up Toon, the next video review will be right around the corner.

Enjoy, folks.

Hurray! But if this season DOESN'T start with a snail-like creature that loves explaining things then I am OUT Quinns

Max Brannan

I actually remember coming across Toon at the bookstore in the mid to late 80s. For whatever reason, my brain held on to the memory of my confusion and curiosity. I guess for today.

Rowan

Yesssss! I've played this one a bunch! Really fun and interesting system!

Woutarr

Oh can't wait to listen to this, i really enjoyed listening to skyrealms of jorune :)

frazninja

Imagine, if you will, a saloon full of anthropomorphic wolves dressed in the style of old school Chicago gangsters. They are hooting. They are hollering. They are wafting their fedoras in front of their face at the sight of a figure silhouetted in the doorway. “Awooga,” says the head wolf, “it’s Play To Find Out season 2 episode 1”

GuardianLemartes

A PLAY TO FIND OUT FOR MY MORNING JOB YEAHHHH

Christine Pizan

Quinn's keeps encouraging me to gamble my pencils away, I'm not sure I can support this!

Aaron Sinner

Playing Toon for the first time was a watershed moment for me in RPGs. “Oh! We aren’t here to WIN… We are here to delight one another with surprises, creativity, and a fun story!” Perhaps surprising that insight came packaged in a PvP RPG—or maybe with the direct conflict elevated, that was exactly why I was able to see it.

HALLOO HALLAY WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY

NoFun

Generally, I enjoy seeing whacky TTRPGs played, old or new. Amazing job!

Neil Chazin

I bought toon when I was in high school because I thought it was hilarious. I’ve ran it twice as one shots (I don’t think I knew that term then) for two different groups of people in the first half of the 1990s.

Dan Svensson

I've played Toon once. It was thoroughly unfun. We did all the cartoon things but meh. I was like let's never do that again afterwards. Also you come up with a really really really cool and cartoony idea and wao wao fail the roll, it fkn sucked. I think Toon might actually work as a PBTA game though. Probably not. Great episode though, enjoyed it immensely.

Joshua Aslan Smith

Seeing this season start got me to finally sign on as a patreon to watch the rest of s1 of play to find out (love all your stuff, long ago SUSD backer), really excited for this too!

Thom Madray

I also signed up to finish S1 of PTFO. It’s so good and happy to support the show in my small way

HoTeck Kan

Hell yes! This is so exciting. I haven't thought about Toon in ages.

Will Mitchell

Sound design was amazing! Really makes me want to use soundboards in my home games

Wusashicat

The sound design on this episode is INSANE!! Best I've ever heard in an actual play!

Brett Rolfe

Such fond high school memories of TOON! One of the systems we actually played, rather than just spending time creating characters, designing dungeons, and throwing impact-resistant dice at fans (looking at you, first edition AD&D)…

Zhed

The players, GM, and production are incredibly enjoyable as always. The Toon system is not nearly as interesting as Jorune was, I fear.

Andrew Straight

I was so hoping they would go full meta-looney toons and seamlessly switch to Rob as the GM AND Quinns as Nikkopatamus! Amazing episode!!!

qquest

Not many systems are as interesting as Jorune, to be fair! But fear not. This was a little pit-stop season for us to catch our breath. Season 3 will be exactly what you're looking for...

qquest

I couldn't possibly have known how popular the Thriddle would be 😔🥀

Daniel Atkinson

The Cartoon TTRPG genre lives on with Helluva Town recently!

Evan Moses

This was very fun! It's very obvious how this system works best with players who aren't unsettled by failure, and having two very funny players really made this a delight to listen to.

Druidspell

Great episode! This reminded of playing the Maid RPG by Ryo Kamiya with my group back in university. RPGs are great when they can be absolutely unhinged!

Justin Campbell

When do we get an episode of Rob GM’ing Toon? His encyclopedic knowledge of animation tropes was impressive.

Swampy

Hilarious, can't wait for the the rest of this!

Just lovely stuff. Such a great AP

Dragonback Lancer

Is it spelled Nickopotamus or Nick O'Potamus

Lojaan

That was super fun and hilariously easy to visualise 😁

Tyro The Fox

*big kiss to the camera* Good Night Everybody!

Justin Pearson

Joined the Patreon mostly cause of this Find Out. I played this so much as a kid...more than D&D for sure. I have very very fond memories of this game. Great to have a very solid podcast of it. Sound effects make the cartoon!
