Hey all! The next talkback episode about our Nobilis campaign is online! I just this second got back to my desk at home following a flight. ✈️

Perhaps this sounds cool and international?

Rest assured, it is not. I broke through my anti-perspirant about three hours ago, I had boiled sweets for lunch, and one of my eyelids keeps getting gummed half-shut like I'm Quasimodo.

Hopefully I make a slightly better accounting for myself on this talkback episode, which - I'll be honest - I have no idea about the contents of. What's on this recording? Why, it's a fun surprise for you, and for me.

Enjoy(?) everybody!

TIL “boiled sweets” = hard candy. Nice

AngryPanda

Oh heck yeah!

NukeTheHippos

Can't wait for the permitting discussions to get an overpass built across the entire chancel

Vellzi

Great conversation!

Mike Chapman

Enemies... bet that WAS a fun surprise.

Marko Žeravica

Listened to this at 3:30 am after waking up with a sore throat, that enemies part almost tripped me out as I was dozing off, but thankfully, I've fallen asleep to many a Magnus Archives episode. Nice try, tho

A home doesn't just mean your house, right? You can also feel at home in a city, or even a country. In that case, roads are what ties that home together - arguably roads are what makes a city into one coherent thing, and thus allow it to function as a home.

Navigantor

Country Roads do notoriously take you back to the place you belong (provided that place is West Virginia)

I admit that the following might be my past GM trauma speaking. That said, this is what I heard: Rob: "I intend to play roads in opposition to home" Quinns: "Please don't do that, I don't know if this system can accommodate that." Rob: "Yeah, I'm totally going to do it anyway!"

Tenstorme .

Been thinking about the dichotomy that's built into these domains, and how they sit someone opposite to the understanding of Home. I can't help but think of the old adage of stage shows: You have to go away to come back.

Joshua Le Gallais

I reckon the roads domain probably came from the expression 'All roads lead home' which describes how we make so many choices but consistently end up with similar out comes because we usually act in line with our nature which is [relatively] consistent. Basically, we can't defy our nature / our upbringing, at least not for long.

Andrew Woods

Per Rob’s question about roads. It should be remembered that “roads” aren’t synonymous with “travel” and “departure” traveling on a road is traveling on a path others have come before you on. It’s well worn down with time and care and most importantly intention. There is a really beautiful sentiment that roads are us trying to make safe and comfortable the wilds not just for ourselves but for others. Traveling on a road is traveling on a bit of homey technology. Bringing home and safety with you into the wide world

Haha, you /were/ picking up on some of mine and Rob's history and baggage of playing with one another for years, but not what you think...

Are we doing a week between each proper episode and talkback episode?

Brian Peters

I really want to know... did Quinns just... "assign" the players Roads and Rest as their domains?

Rob Morgan

We genuinely had no idea what domains even were. He put those objects in front of us and we just picked.

Rob Morgan

Yeah I really like this aspect. You can make an argument for paths as the earliest possible human technology... but it's also a "technology" we share with many animals.

"Now we're playing Nobilis" - yes! Re. "home": 1. Imperators can embody contradictory concepts, and still be commonly referred by some subset of those. IIRC there are even Imperators who have rescued bits of excruciated domains by incorporating them, so sidelines and oddball additions can be a thing. 2. An Imperator being "home" or whatever and that including an apparently contradictory concept like "roads" should most often IMO be approached as "what is a conception of home that encompasses roads" - and if that hurts your brain too badly use #1 above. 3. Option I'm not a huge fan of, but that's still perfectly valid: say "home" is a shorthand for a higher concept, not the everyday meaning we can understand with limited human minds. This is like #2 but handwaving all the brainhurt. Can't remember if it's in the book, but I always played it so that the mortal being ennobled absolutely affects the interpretation and expression of the domain.

I believe John Denver settled this whole road/home argument a long time ago.
