“You finally succeeded?” Artemis asked as Jake was already sitting down, his legs crossed and his body full of wounds.

The duel with the other long-range archer had dragged on for a good while longer, but with Jake’s sudden upgrade, the balance had been tipped, allowing him to eventually win out. There was also the fact that Jake simply had more resources available, and if the fight had dragged out any longer, he would have definitely won with or without the upgrade.

“Yeah, I got my upgrade,” Jake said with a smile. “Ancient rarity now.”

“Not much changed from what I saw,” Artemis commented. “Did you go for a linear upgrade to strengthen the foundation of your archery?”

“Bingo,” Jake nodded.

“Smart if you’re confident,” Artemis said. “Seeing as you’ve gotten the upgrade, does that mean you’re done with the training?”

“No, not yet,” Jake shook his head. “I want to take some more time to fully adapt to whatever minor changes this upgrade did bring, while also starting to lay the groundwork for another upgrade. However, sadly, I don’t think this kind of training will work very well for what I want to do next.”

Artemis frowned, but quickly realized what he was getting at. “You want to upgrade your archery with your poisons in mind?”

“Yes and no,” Jake said. “I’m considering-“

“I’ll stop you right there,” Artemis held up a hand. “While I’m definitely curious, best you don’t tell me, but just do what you want to do. As usual, I don’t wanna give you any direct advice when it comes to what direction you should take your archery, and I don’t even want to risk my subconscious reaction to hearing your idea having an impact.”

“Fair enough,” Jake shrugged, fine with not saying either way.

“You just focus on recovering while I get the next sparring partner ready,” Artemis said. “I do want to warn you that we are kind of running out of opponents that are worth fighting. It’s not that easy finding archers who aren’t going to be dominated by you.”

“I believe in you,” Jake grinned, giving her a thumbs-up.

“Worst case scenario, I can just have Gladiel step in again to whoop your ass,” Artemis smiled devilishly.

“Hey, you don’t know, maybe I stand a chance now!” Jake protested.

Artemis just looked at Jake with raised eyebrows for a few seconds.

“Alright, yeah, I’m gonna get my ass beat for sure, but I’ll last longer!” Jake relented, having to be realistic. Shit, he wasn’t even entirely certain Gladiel had gone all-out last time they fought, and even if she hadn’t, Jake knew he wasn’t going to win in the short term, meaning his defeat would be inevitable as her advantage would only build.

“Now I’m convinced I want to see a rematch, but not right away,” Artemis chuckled. “Signal me when you’re ready to continue.”

“Got it,” Jake nodded, and a second later, Artemis was gone, leaving Jake to recover in peace. Once he was back to top form – which, again, didn’t take super long as he didn’t use any boosting skills – he signaled for Artemis to bring in his next opponent.

He was another very classical archer using a mix of wind and lightning to amplify his Path, and due to the guy’s speedy nature, it was a good fight. Jake won in the end, and after another brief period of recovery, he continued the practice.

Jake’s archery training went on like this as he faced archer after archer, allowing him to fully solidify that he was happy with his latest archery upgrade while also bringing him towards working on the next one.

With his newly gained upgrade, Jake’s win rate increased by a fair amount. The increase in Strength and Agility from his archery skill alone played the largest role, but the added damage and better control over his arrow’s flight certainly didn’t hurt either.

Even as he began laying the groundwork for his next upgrade, Jake was fully aware he shouldn’t expect to see a rarity upgrade even if he succeeded. Weapon skills were notoriously difficult to upgrade, and Jake wasn’t even sure someone like the Sword Saint had a mythical rarity weapon skill despite being an absolute monster with a sword in hand.

The fact that Gladiel had a mythical rarity archery skill truly made her worthy of having a Divine Blessing alone. Speaking of Gladiel, Jake did end up having a rematch, which ended just as he’d expected. In a duel like this, she was stupidly overpowered, so if Jake failed to win in the first few minutes, his fate would be sealed, as she just kept gaining momentum until his inevitable defeat.

She ended up being the only one for Jake to rematch, even if he’d lost to a lot more archers than her, though she had definitely been the one to dominate him the most during their duels. Even if Artemis still had a few more extremely talented geniuses waiting in the wings, none reached her level, even if they did beat Jake.

In the end, he ended up having another twenty-four archery duels before Artemis had to regretfully announce to Jake she was out of suitable opponents. Sure, there were more archers in the Pantheon of Life who could have been Jake’s opponent, but they were busy doing their own things, and neither Artemis nor Jake wanted to pull them from some dungeon or Hunting Ground to come play with Jake for a single duel.

Jake didn’t get another upgrade with these last duels, but he did leave the barren moon with a solid idea and even some great testing done of the direction he wanted to take the next upgrade.

Back in the living room of the Palace, Jake threw himself down on the couch as he let out a loud sigh. “I should do that again sometime, even if it was definitely tiring on the mental front.”

“The Pantheon of Life is never lacking when it comes to talented archers,” Artemis smiled. “I’m glad you seem to have benefited from this experience. It definitely seems like you had a productive few days.”

“Oh, for sure,” Jake nodded wholeheartedly. While in the midst of it, Jake had not really considered the passage of time much, but it felt like a long time. He had been in a constant cycle of dueling and recovering, never allowing his mind to fully rest as he kept focusing on his archery skill even when not fighting.

Coupled with the fact that he constantly had to analyze and adapt to new opponents, while, again, focusing on upgrading his archery skill, it wasn’t surprising that Jake was mentally wrung out. If he had just been fighting or hunting for the same amount of time, he wouldn’t have been this tired, as he would have allowed his mind time to rest in between hunts, but he’d purposefully tried to keep himself in a state of constant hyperawareness for the entire duration.

That’s why, with how mentally exhausted he was, he couldn’t help but be surprised when he learned this entire archery training arc had only lasted a bit over ten days. That meant Jake had fought half a dozen opponents on several days, with most duels lasting several hours, followed by a brief period of recovery before it was straight into the next fight.

“How do you plan on working on the next archery upgrade?” Artemis asked. “Need my help with anything?”

“Likely just transport,” Jake said as he stared at the ceiling. “I plan on going to that snowy place again to do some hunting and practice. That way, I can also get in a few more class levels before I head back to the Order of the Malefic Viper, where I know I’ll primarily work on my alchemy for a while.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Artemis nodded as she also sat down. The two were quiet for around a minute before Jake slightly turned his head to the side, where his eyes met those of a powerful B-grade that had snuck up on him.

“Tired?” Jasper asked as he sat on the backrest of the couch.

“Yep, real tired,” Jake chuckled. “How about you? Had some fun while I was gone?”

Jasper clapped his paws as a weird metal rod appeared in his them. “Found treasure.”

Jake stared at the rod, his Identify telling him it was some powerful ancient rarity metal that he didn’t have any use for, even if Jasper offered.

“Seems like we’ve both been productive,” Jake chuckled, not even bothering to ask where Jasper had gotten the rod. The little guy had full access to the teleportation network of the Pantheon of Life and could go anywhere he wanted. Combined with his ability to jump between planes, he could go even more places.

“Productive!” Jasper yelled happily as he clapped his paws again, summoning more than a hundred of the same metal rods floating in the air. It was only now that Jake noticed some of them had etchings from some script on them, and when he looked a little closer, all these rods had definitely been carved to the exact same size.

“Did you rob some poor mage by stealing from a formation?” Jake asked with a deadpan expression.

“Found,” Jasper said shamelessly.

“Where did you find them?”

“Ground.”

“Did they happen to stick out of the ground while inside some kind of magic circle in the ground?” Jake asked the little thief.

Jasper nodded enthusiastically. “Just there!”

“Right,” Jake sighed, silently apologizing to the poor person who had his entire formation circle ruined by a newly evolved B-grade with sticky paws.

“Want?” Jasper asked, tilting his head as he extended the rod he was holding between his paws toward Jake.

“No, no, you keep them,” Jake waved off the little guy, who looked very relieved Jake hadn’t said yes.

“Okay!” Jasper said, putting away all his loot again.

Speaking of Jasper’s loot, Jake had learned that, contrary to most monsters who could store away items, Jasper didn’t have any internal storage or even a skill to store anything spatially. Instead, he had an actual physical place he had an innate connection to, allowing him to store all his things there.

This place was on another plane or something, meaning that locating it without knowing exactly where it was wouldn’t be easy. The only way to get there would be to follow Jasper whenever he went there personally to manage the unique formation he was setting up in his own little plane.

Of course, to someone like Artemis, following Jasper into his unique plane would be easy as pie, but she had voiced serious doubt that any B-grade would be able to, even if they were talented in traversing the planes. Jasper’s unique magic that allowed him to move around without space magic only made things more complicated, as the vast majority of people capable of traveling between planes did it using space magic, making their insights useless when it came to deciphering what Jasper was doing.

Jasper looked around the room a bit before he decided to jump down onto the couch next to Jake. It seemed he had also decided to take a little break as he joined Artemis and Jake in their relaxing silence.

Sadly, peace rarely lasts, and Jake soon found himself jolted back into it by a semi-unexpected source.

From beyond the void, his Patron reached out, making Jake curious. “Hey Villy, what’s up?”

“Oh, hi there, nice to catch you available, I know you’ve been busy for the last few days and I’ve held back on reaching out,” the Malefic Viper said, having been a bro as usual by not disturbing Jake during his archery training.

“Thanks for that, had a good training session,” Jake responded gratefully.

“Awesome to hear. Anyway, I’m reaching out to give you a friendly warning,” Villy said, casual as always.

“Warning about what?” Jake asked, unsure if he should be worried or not.

“Well, I decided to put some feelers out for gods who may be curious in seeing if Jasper is someone they would want to bless, and I got a bite from the person I believe would be the best fit. I’ve held him back for a while, but seeing as the Shimmershroud Planeswarper and you are both there, I let him know,” the Viper explained.

“Alright, not sure that warrants a warning. Well, I guess it depends. Which god are we talking about?” Jake wondered. However, right then, Jake felt an aura fall over the palace.

Artemis looked up with worry, Jake instantly knowing why. The entire Pantheon of Life was covered in several grand formations meant to defend it from outsiders; however, this presence that clearly didn’t belong to a god from the Pantheon of Life had appeared out of nowhere.

A second later, without even the faintest detectable ripple in space, a figure appeared in the middle of the living room. This person’s aura was entirely suppressed, and without his Bloodline, Jake knew he wouldn’t even be able to notice this newcomer’s presence. Even now, as he stared directly at the god, Jake’s eyes saw nothing, but perhaps most frighteningly was that the same seemed true for Artemis. The god had purposefully let his presence be known, yet visually, he didn’t seem to exist.

Not until he started talking, anyway.

“Perception-based Bloodline, and quite a powerful one at that,” the god muttered as he glanced at Jake’s, his full form finally revealed. At this point, Jake had also stood up from the couch in preparation for what could happen next.

He was a relatively scrawny-looking elf of some kind, wearing a long, dirty coat with baggy pants held up by a utility belt filled with different odd-looking tools. His hair was long, nearly reaching his shoulders, but the most noticeable part was definitely his eyes. More specifically, one of his eyes.

On the left side, he had a normal eye, while on the right, he had one that looked to be made of stone; without being told, Jake instantly knew it was some kind of artifact of incredible power.

Overall, this god didn’t look very impressive, but more like some guy who had just stumbled out of some jungle adventure movie. Jake was about to question who he was when Artemis promptly gave him the answer as she bowed slightly.

“I greet the Seeker,” she said respectfully, her tone also containing a hint of confusion.

The newcomer god, seemingly only noticing the goddess now, turned toward her. “Ah, Artemis, wasn’t it? Made it to Godqueen, I see. Congratulations.”

“Thank you,” Artemis said with a nod. “May I know why the Seeker has arrived in the Pantheon of Life?”

The Seeker answered by pointing to the little cat-like B-grade still sitting on the couch, staring at everything happening. “Because of him.”

“Jasper?” the Shimmershroud Planeswarper asked, tilting his head in confusion.

“Yes, you,” the Seeker nodded casually. “Vilastromoz said you might be compatible with my Path and suggested I check you out to see if you’re a good fit for receiving a Blessing. Before I bother continuing, are you interested?”

Jasper glanced at Jake and Artemis before looking back at the god. “Blessing good?”

“It’s generally agreed upon that the granting of Blessings is indeed an advantageous arrangement for both Patron and the blessed, assuming their Paths are compatible. Seeing as you come recommended by Vilastromoz, I shall go by the base assumption that some level of compatibility exists between us.”

The Shimmershroud Planeswarper looked toward Jake for advice, and he quickly gave the little guy a nod. Seeing as Villy had been the one doing the suggesting, this should be a good thing.

“Okay!” Jasper also nodded to the god.

“Good,” the Seeker said. “While I do trust the judgment of the Malefic Viper, I would like to perform a small test myself before we reach an agreement. Would that be okay with you?”

Jasper tilted his head and thought it over for a second before nodding. “Jasper, okay!”

“Very well,” the Seeker said as he waved his hand, a cube appearing in it. “Escape from inside this as fast as you can. Ready?”

The newly evolved B-grade looked a bit unsure if he should agree as the god sweetened the deal.

“Part of escaping requires obtaining objects of power, all of which you are allowed to keep upon successfully getting out.”

“Ready!” Jasper agreed without needing further convincing.

“Be swift, then,” the Seeker said as a beam shot out of the cube and enveloped Jasper, absorbing him into the cube.

The Seeker nodded as he took a step forward and placed the cube on the coffee table before nonchalantly sitting down on a lounge chair as he took out a pipe and started smoking, Jake and Artemis looking at him all the while.

Completely unbothered, the god took a few puffs before acknowledging them. “Yes, can I help you two with anything?”

The seeker seems like such a chill dude.

Alright the seeker might be my new favourite character 😂

Glad to see the Seeker is as enigmatic as expected, personally testing a B-grade to see if theyre worthy of a blessing

brjenness

Half expected jasper to disappear and reappear with all the loot almost instantly.

Bahahah lupin the god has entered the room.

The Seeker seems cool, I wonder if Jake will ask about his puzzle box?

Did anyone else get 2 emails from Zog one for today's chapter and one from a while ago?

NinjaDad

Tyftc Zog!

Jordan Rogers

Great chapter, think Jake is going to make a new friend, think the Seeker is gonna be surprised when it takes just a few minutes, but jasper goes back in cause that’s all he could carry in one trip?

CT

Nerding out about puzzles/challenges incoming..

Schneeente

I like the seeker already. Considering that Jasper is also non-combat oriented and also wants to "collect" stuff... seems like a good match indeed, this will be so much fun ^^

One Winged Angel

The Seeker is straight smoking a pipe full of God Level Weed isnt he?

Kris Piskorski

pacing is tremendous, as always

Burkes

Shows up, locks Jasper inside the matrix, sits down, refuses to elaborate. Love this guy.

Alex

2 days later "that took long" ... "There was a lot of stuff" Seeker enters to find the entire cube stripped along with the nails

Denis Trenque

Interesting, for reference at the chosen ceremony [Book 9], Jake received from the Golden Road Emporium group : “the Puzzle Box of the Seeker. A box created by the famous god of puzzles and secrets, the Seeker, filled with mana puzzles. This one is designed for mortals but is not one to be beaten in but a few millennia. We hope it can bring the Chosen entertainment and challenges for ages to come.”

What a cool dude just shows up puts a box on the table for a cat to jump inside then lights a joint major respect and aura

Xander

TFTC :) I would be excited for a bigger puzzle cube but Jake isnt anywhere near finishing his first one yet so no clue what he can get out of the seeker atm. Suggested edits: "fight had *dragged out* any longer" should be "dragged on" or, since that would be repetitive from earlier, "carried on" "upgrade *did bring*, " doesnt sound right, maybe "gives" instead? "*In the end*, *he ended up*" "In the end, he had..." or "He ended up having" either/or not both. "kind of magic circle *in the ground*?" repetitive. Just ditch this part. "glanced at *Jake’s*, his full " either somethings missing or this should be "Jake" "*absorbing him into the cube*" We know Jaspers going into the cube thats been established so this is redundant. Maybe "who vanished" instead?

Rahsheem Reid

Na this guy might be my favorite God so far.

Dick Dastardly

I wonder if Jake will show his progress on his puzzle box

frankie doerr

Where’s minaga when you need more chaos

Ty Cooper

Woo, I am liking the Seeker. Arrogant adventurer that seems like a lot of fun. Bet Jasper will smash through his trial in no time shocking the Seeker and making him a chosen or at least divine blessing. Will laugh when Jasper 100% clears the cube getting the extra credit finds. Wonder how long till Jake tells the Seeker that he loves his puzzle box. The Seeker mildly impressed how far Jake has gotten as a c-grade. Tftc!

C0bra$

Thank u for the story

Kt-x

Thanks for the chapter

Loststar7

You’re right. He does seem like a fun person. And don’t worry he’s nowhere near as sneaky as you are.

Lynderyn

Cube Upgrade?

Devillelouch

Schrödinger's Jasper. Jake needs to distract the Seeker for maximum legitimate item acquisition. Jasper gets to keep what he steals.

Tim Schillinger

Just that much better when he appears back with some treasures out of Seekers coin pouch 🤣

John Durrett

Tyftc. Jasper whatever you do, don’t jump into any cube that has pins in it!

Paul B

Seeker = aura farming boss 😂 TYFTC!

Leviathan

I can already tell the seeker is gonna be a treat in the future

Rewdan

Cheers Zogarth great chapter. I think it’s going to be really funny with the Seeker and Jakes interactions.

Sarianne

🤣

Arieh Sochaczevski

Thanks for the chapter! This may be the first time I’ve ever used the word, as it has never felt appropriate before: That is some serious rizz. I really hope we get an interesting discussion around the puzzle box here. The Seeker saying something that either leaves Artemis impressed with Jake again in a new way, or that leaves Jake feeling disappointed in himself and renews his training goals.

Corwin Amber

thanks for the chapter 'glanced at Jake’s' Jake's -> Jake

David Hall

The Seeker has cometh get things everything else is secondary. In the territory of an apex faction? Don't. Matter. The Seeker seeks a mortal to hold his Blessing so he can get those sweet dividends

SmokeJam

I already like the guy.

Cees Tollenaar

He did elaborate though. It's a test for Jasper to see if he's worthy of his blessing

Doodlenoodle

Where is Minaga? Why dont he poke his nose in on this? It will only get better with him there.

joel southard

Thank you for the chapter

brjenness

I would like the seeker normally, but way to many references to rizz and aura and assuming he's smoking weed. therefore, I feel obliged to show how super cool I am and declaring my dislike for the guy in order to maximize my aura farming

Matthew

Glad we didn’t have to wait too long to meet the seeker. How long do we think in till Jake gets a mythical archery skill?

Seamus Harley

Oh yes, I need this, I bet the seeker believes he has the better labyrinth puzzles too

Prospects

One edit could be removing the ‘s from Jake’s when the seeker first addresses him talking about his bloodline.

Daniel Golding

Seeker has zero fucks to give. I like him.

Dan

I like this guy already, and I bet Jasper's gonna help him advance his own path a lot. Jake is just making a bunch of record boosters for gods at this point.

Wimsey's daughter

I think it'll be a while before he gets a mythical archery skill. It's kind of Jake's "thing" by now that he's better at magic and melee than archery, but still makes it a cornerstone of his path, because he just loves it. Doing a complete 180 on that with a single grade would be a bit abrupt, I think

brjenness

unlikely, but the thought made me chuckle...tomorrow starts with the seeker doing a double take and saying...you're a mortal?

brjenness

the real test isn't escaping, it's how much jasper enjoys it. if he asks to go again, divine. if he steals a second cube and activates it before the seeker can stop him, chosen.

Hornbach

@ Zogarth a question outside the context of the chapter. Did you basebthe character of the Sword Saint on Miyamoto Musashi? I am not Just asking because of the name but apperently he is one of the greatest swordsmen in the History of Japan and also a Painter. I learned about him by pure coincidence when i got a musik video about him in my YouTube recommendations, and i just thought that it fit really well once i did a bit of research.

Manowar

Maybe finding out a way to use the puzzle box he never thought of before?

Lemonsqueezy

Jake is way to famous for the Seeker to not know, especially since the god collects knowledge.

Connor

Thanks for the chapter

brjenness

I chuckle at a lot of stupid things, one of which would be the seeker getting offended at jake's progress with his cube and declaring him a cheater like minaga did.

Bi-Dailey

Just as Valdemar's records manifested as the stories of Thor (and arguably Beowolf) on earth pre-system, the Seeker seems to be the source of Odin. A lot of people assume Odin was cut from the same cloth as Zeus or the Abrahamic god, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The myths paint him as a relatively chill, one eyed seeker of knowledge. He regularly travels the world in disguise and hatches absurd schemes to either steal something valuable or discover some hidden knowledge.

ABTelford

Ha! I think I’m gonna like this god. I think he’ll like Jake too. Casual all the way.

KevB

I'm pretty sure Artemis is pretty high-ranking now and this guy is super casual. So is he super-powerful or are there bloodline shenanigans going on?

DirePants

Wow this guy is a kind of a dick. I don’t mind casualness but rudeness is my pet peeve.

Steven Tuttle

Okay fellow fans and maybe even Zogarth himself if he's reading I'm looking for a replaca of Jake's mask for my Halloween costume if anyone can help please let me know

Lonnie

I like him. Super thief extraordinaire, casually bypassing pantheon of life defenses. Noticed Jake's bloodline, plops down and starts to wait patiently. If he's not strong, he's supremely confident in escaping anything a primordial can send his way

Ty Cooper

Lighting a pipe in someone's living room is a dick move for sure. I still like him though. I figure he will give Jake and Artemis some way to connect or see each other over the vast distance and even the 93rd universe.

Ty Cooper

I think he will be pleasantly surprised and glad the box went to someone worthy.

Jana

I don’t think Jasper will be swift - I think its more of a „I can leave anytime but not before I robbed you blind“ Situation.

Ra

I was bored at first, but that was all worth it at the end. Super stoked about tomorrow's chapter!

j

I can vibe with the Seekers energy, if I was personally overwhelmingly powerful my give a fucks would be next to zero. 🤣

doctordirt

Please tell me he's smoking the best weed in the multiverse

Hussein Zenki

bro knows no one can hold him 😭

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Kevin Watson

jake though the void lollipop gave good perception? wait until he hits this

Ithoughtofsomething

I always imagined it as Jim Carrey's "The Mask" wooden mask. Might be a little bland for your needs

Ronan B

Yeah I assumed that from the start given his name is Noboru Miyamoto - only thing that doesn't quite match is their style (Musashi had a two-sword style, Niten Ichi-ryū) but the sword saint's general personality fits with the Book of Five Rings. Haven't figured out the Noboru part though, current guess is Noboru Ando (gangster, soldier, and movie star of samurai lineage, famed for his sexual escapades, founded a dynasty of his own, and came to the end of his life in a similar situation to the Sword Saint, whose passing was only interrupted by the arrival of the system rejuvenating him.

brjenness

wild guesses that will annoy some of you... 1. Jasper comes back injured bad, seeker heals him and explains that the prize the planeswalking cosmic time dragon was sitting on was to test and see if he recognized when not to try because it was impossible...Jasper chuckles and holds up the prize he stole from the dragon. or 2. we get Jasper perspective just a couple minutes after leaving. he's already got all the prizes and we get to observe him doing Arnold level equations to determine the optimum amount of cuteness to use on seeker to get the maximum blessing.

Daniel Wade

The seeker is such a great character. So nonchalant.

Takoda Heitz

Here’s hoping that half of tomorrow’s chapter is from Jasper’s point of view.

Gsaber

Is this the feeling of completely catching up? I feel defiled

Ricky Keenum

I like this guy, thanks for introducing the no nonsense chill dude and for the chapter zogi

Bloodshadow

I hope Jake mentions the puzzle box and his love of it and asking about sequels once he finishes it in a few centuries

Xien

lol… his ‘I’m not here for you special snowflakes’ attitude is a hoot! I’m amazed Jasper wasn’t waiting on the couch he sat on with all the stuff from the cube before he got there.

Jordan Rogers

I think it’ll be funny if he tells him he has been doing it wrong the whole time but is impressed he still manages to finish every level

Cerby

Welp its offical I fucking love the seeker

Gabe Stankiewicz

I live vicariously through Jake lol every time he spends a good time hanging, training, or….”training”, with Artemis I get giddy and happy for our boy Jake 😂 thank you zog! Thanks for the chappy mate!

“Perception-based Bloodline, and quite a powerful one at that,” the god muttered as he glanced at (Jake)Jake’s, his full form finally revealed.

Phil Ritter

He’d need to switch to someone else besides Travis then. My guy is already working at the speed of light with how many series he is narrating. I’m also waiting for Beware of Chicken 5 rn and at least that one is announced for December
