One had to capitalize on opportunities once given, something Miranda was well aware of. When the Sword Saint had made arrangements to send word that the four were returning to Earth, she knew she had to make use of it.

While she would argue Earth was very stable despite its hectic political environment, its situation wasn’t entirely ideal. As someone carrying the Divine Blessing of the Witches of the Verdant Lagoon, Miranda was offered some respect, but she was still viewed by many as merely an administrator.

In other words, they saw her power as hollow and occasionally snubbed her in front of Draskil and Scarlett, as many of those from the Order of the Malefic Viper simply assumed that these two were of far higher standing than Miranda herself. Sure, they were both stronger than her, even if she was confident in giving Draskil quite a hard time if he dared battle her within her domain, but overall, they were certainly stronger, something those from the Order seemed to care more about than anything else.

It didn’t help that Miranda had never truly been part of the Order of the Malefic Viper, and in some ways didn’t fully view herself as a member either. She’d never spent a prolonged period at the faction but had always been too busy on Earth. Going by the amount of work she had upon returning from Nevermore, she also wasn’t confident that going to the Order would be wise.

However, Miranda had a tried-and-tested method to make people realize the power she held was far from insignificant. All she needed was Jake present to once more personally communicate that she was indeed his representative and was actively carrying out his will. That she had his full trust.

This was the kind of reminder that needed to happen occasionally, especially in instances like this, where skeptical newcomers had arrived. Sure, they still showed respect to her and followed the rules of Earth, but that didn’t mean they truly recognized her position as the Court Witch of the Chosen.

That’s why she had chosen to use this day to show around a number of influential young masters and mistresses from several of the larger internal factions of the Order. The Order had so many damn factions internally that it was sometimes hard to track. There were, of course, the vampire families, but that was just scratching the surface.

Powerful people often had large families due to their exceptionally long lives, to the extent that one individual could establish an entire clan within a generation or two. The Order had thousands of these, often founded by powerful A-grades and S-grades. The competent ones had felt the winds of change and predicted that Earth would be an important place for the Order in the future, making them want to establish a foothold there as soon as possible.

Of course, due to the level restriction, they were limited on who they could send, meaning they didn’t exactly send their best and brightest, but just the ones with the highest status who were eligible. Creating an environment where Miranda had to deal with a slew of arrogant youngsters… who were more often than not older than herself.

Her group also had members of the Dragonflights, demon clans, and even a few from the United Tribes, but at least these young masters and mistresses tended to be a lot more tolerable. They knew they were guests of Earth, while those from the Order walked around with the attitude that they owned the place, as “their” Chosen was the World Leader.

One thing those from the Order all did share, though, was a fanatical level of reverence towards the Malefic Viper, and by extension, his Chosen. So, if she weaponized that, Miranda expected her work to get a lot easier from today onwards; hence, she had gathered all the most influential youngsters for a personal tour and discussion of future plans.

Of course, gathering them alone wouldn’t have been feasible, which was why she had asked the one person on Earth who could make all the sycophants come crawling.

“You’re really insistent on that conservation stuff, huh?” the Malefic Dragonkin asked as Miranda filled the time while walking by, explaining plans to limit allowed construction areas on Earth.

“Of course,” Miranda answered, leading the several dozen influential youngsters toward her destination. “This is also the wish of the Chosen. He doesn’t want to see his homeworld turned fully urban but wishes for nature to still flourish.”

“I guess he is a hunter,” Draskil muttered. “Still, you should get rid of at least one of those oceans of yours. Way too much water and way too little land.”

“Expanding the constructible area available on the planet with artificial islands could be discussed, but only when the World Council is fully assembled,” Miranda said, having indeed considered the matter herself.

Right then, Miranda got a message from Lillian, who was back in the main office in Haven. A certain teleportation circle connecting the Order of the Malefic Viper and Earth had been activated, and Miranda had to suppress a smile. They had returned a bit earlier than Miranda had expected, but their timing was still good.

Earth had expanded its teleportation network a lot in the last couple of years, with the teleportation hub near Haven primarily connecting to another larger hub. Only certain people were allowed to travel directly from the Order to what was effectively the capital of Earth, with one of those people naturally being Jake, who even had a personal teleportation circle back in his home.

“Artificial islands aren’t enough,” Draskil continued to harp on about how Earth had too much water. “Do you even know how much you have hidden beneath the ground? Should at least clean up the surface a little.”

“As I said, we’ll discuss it with the World Council,” Miranda answered politely, mainly to get him off her back. She seriously doubted that a council including the Sky Whale would vote to somehow remove an entire ocean.

Turning to all those following them, Miranda spoke. “I just got word that a few influential individuals have come from the Order of the Malefic One, and I hope you will all join me in greeting them.”

“Any of those World Council people?” Draskil questioned.

“Two,” Miranda answered, also making the somewhat bored youngsters perk up. Even if most of them were horribly incompetent when it came to politics, the majority had at least realized the influence of the World Council. Granted, many theorized it was the result of the Chosen’s experiment or something like that, and didn’t believe that Jake would truly give them any power without it being part of some grander scheme.

It hadn’t helped that the most powerful members of the World Council hadn’t been around, making it appear like a weak group of individuals who were all politics and no actual power.

“Finally,” Draskil said with a toothy grin before he had a realization. “Wait… considering the missing members… wouldn’t that mean he is also here?”

“He is indeed,” Miranda smiled, surprised at Draskil’s ability to stay subtle and build the myste-

“About damn time Jake bothered returning to his own damn planet!” Draskil practically yelled, now really getting the attention of the entire crowd. With a toothy grin, the Dragonkin looked at Miranda. “Let’s go!”

Before Miranda could even say anything, Draskil shot into the air before rapidly changing direction and flying directly towards the teleportation hub in the distance. All she could do was sigh as she looked at the many starry-eyed mega-fans of Jake following her.

“We shouldn’t dally too much either,” Miranda said calmly while mobilizing a bit of her energy to float into the air. “Follow me. Oh, and be on your best behavior; you wouldn’t want the Chosen’s first impression of you all to be negative, now would you?”

With that slightly threatening reminder, Miranda flew to follow Draskil at a relatively slow pace, all the other young masters and mistresses following her closely. She just hoped Draskil wouldn’t make a mess of things before they got there, and that Jake would once more expertly play his role as the mysterious Chosen who was beyond dealing with minor characters, thus vesting his power in Miranda.

--

Jake instantly recognized the lone figure that broke away from the group and rapidly made his way towards them. Draskil had a big, toothy grin as he arrived at the large gate leading into the chamber with the teleportation circle before proceeding to shamelessly kick the gate open.

The draconic eyes instantly searched the room before Draskil looked confused. “The fuck you four doing?”

“Unpleasant voyage through the void,” Jake answered, reckoning he should do the talking, considering he was feeling the best.

“Don’t tell me you’ve grown so feeble that something like that can cripple you,” the Malefic Dragonkin said in a sharp tone as his eyes also scanned the others. “Even if your little friends are weak, I-“

He didn’t get another word out before Draskil was blasted back, the entire doorway blown apart as rock and dust were sent everywhere.

Back in the chamber, the King stood with his arm raised, energy emanating from his clawed hand as his voice echoed out. “Silence, lizard.”

“Lizard, eh?”

Draskil teleported behind the Forest King in the very next moment, dark green energy shrouding his scales. He struck toward the Unique Lifeform, but his claw stopped just short as he hit an invisible barrier.

“Lizard indeed.”

The Golden Forest King swept his second hand upwards, his ivory claw bathed in gold as the flooring of the entire teleportation chamber was torn up, and Draskil was sent upwards through the roof by the giant golden claw.

Right after breaking through the ceiling, a dark green explosion erupted from Draskil’s body, eroding the golden claw in an instant. This energy quickly regathered into the form of a draconic snake that shot down towards the chamber and the King.

Meeting the challenge, the Unique Lifeform shot upwards alongside a wave of force that battled the mass of energy. The two clashed for a moment, resulting in another explosion that tore even more of the roof apart before the two took their silliness to the sky.

Behind in the teleportation chamber, Jake was still sitting on the floor with the Sword Saint having joined him. During the scuffle, Jake had picked up Sylphie and placed her in his lap in case any of the ceiling fell on her.

Looking at the Sword Saint, Jake raised an eyebrow. “No comment?”

The old man just sighed. “The Malefic Dragonkin truly caught the Forest King in a bad mood. I don’t think he’s very happy about the sense of helplessness he felt during our unfortunate encounter in the void, and the fact that this brief trip back to Earth left him so affected can’t have been a good reminder.”

Jake nodded in understanding. Yeah, that made sense.

“Also, it should serve to buy the three of us some time to get back in better shape,” the Sword Saint chuckled. “So just lean back, relax, and act like we’re lounging while jovially watching the fight between a Unique Lifeform and a Malefic Dragonkin.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Jake said while scratching Sylphie, who gave off the occasional small screech of complaint.

With a Pulse, he saw that the approaching group Miranda was leading had been delayed slightly by the roof of the teleportation hub getting blown open and the two figures emerging while fighting.

They had all stopped and stared as the King and Draskil both showed off their powers, filling the sky with flashes of gold and dark green. It was clear neither of them was actually taking it seriously, as evidenced by the lack of any boosting skills, but they were still sizing each other up.

“The Forest King has certainly grown stronger,” the Sword Saint commented. “Beyond what his gain in levels would suggest.”

“Yeah, for sure,” Jake nodded. “Though it makes sense… he is a Unique Lifeform, after all.”

“True,” the old man nodded slowly as the two of them kept watching while slowly starting to feel better. Jake also felt like he owed the King an apology – though he would never actually give one – for making fun of the Unique Lifeform earlier about recovering last from the encounter with Oras.

Of everyone, the King was clearly in the best shape now, perhaps exactly because he had been unconscious for longer. Additionally, he was far better at controlling his own soul, which meant he should also be able to heal or at least suppress the void nausea more easily.

While continuing to watch, Jake noticed the group led by Miranda had started approaching once more, making Jake have a thought.

“We should use chairs so that our sitting and relaxing looks more deliberate,” Jake quickly said.

“A good suggestion,” the Sword Saint instantly agreed as the two stood up and summoned chairs before sitting down again, Jake still holding Sylphie throughout as the hawk didn’t seem interested in doing anything besides resting and looking at the sky.

Not even ten seconds later, Miranda appeared at the broken doorway to the now-broken chamber, followed by dozens of individuals from all sorts of varying races. Jake knew the role he had to play and didn’t even turn his head to look towards them as he kept looking up, the rest of the roof having already crumbled by now, giving them a great view. He had even made sure to summon his mask again.

“Lord Thayne,” Miranda said as she walked into the chamber, the rest of her little followers staying just outside, staring at Jake with wide eyes.

“Miranda, please, join us,” Jake said as he waved his hand, summoning another chair beside the two of them. He reckoned it was either that or standing up to greet her, and he didn’t want to risk standing, seeing as he feared he was still a little unstable on his feet. It would be very embarrassing to stumble and fall in front of a bunch of starry-eyed admirers.

“Thank you.” Miranda merely nodded as she sat down beside the two. “If I may, why is Draskil fighting the King?”

“He made a rather inflammatory statement,” the Sword Saint explained with a smile.

“Draskil or the King did?” Miranda asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Both,” Jake chuckled, shaking his head. “Let them have their fun. I reckon Draskil hasn’t been allowed to flex his muscles as much as he would have liked to, and the King certainly needed to get in some exercise.”

“I see,” Miranda nodded as she joined them in watching the fight in silence. At least she appeared to be, as she spoke subtly to Jake telepathically.

“Is everything alright?”

“Why are you asking?” Jake questioned in surprise, not thinking he was letting anything slip.

“Just a feeling. You’re not the only one with intuition, you know?” Miranda shot back.

“True. And yeah, we’re feeling a little under the weather. The trip through the void did a number on us all due to some extenuating circumstances I cannot really talk about,” Jake answered, saying as much as he could.

“Fair enough.” Miranda didn’t pry. “Due to that, I take it you want to sit here and rest a little with the King and Draskil serving as a nice explanation and distraction?”

“Precisely,” Jake smiled to himself behind his mask, happy that Miranda understood. He just hoped that all the onlookers wouldn’t catch on and notice he was acting so lazily due to his less-than-ideal state. The best bet was probably to act like they didn’t exist until he was more confident in not wobbling on his feet.

--

Miranda really had to hand it to Jake. Once more, he had expertly – albeit accidentally – played the role of an aloof Chosen perfectly. It was a great power play by Jake, not even bothering to turn to all the young masters and mistresses, but only addressing Miranda by asking her to join him and the Sword Saint.

In one move, he had communicated that he didn’t care about the political situation of the planet, but was far more interested in the spar between two powerful figures. Additionally, he had shown them that Miranda was someone he invited into his own world, where politics was beneath him, showing that he trusted her.

She could only begin to imagine the kind of messages they were sending between themselves and the actual political experts they had arrived with. There had to be lots of speculation, but Miranda was pretty darn confident her own stock had risen from this brief moment of sitting alongside the Chosen of a Primordial and two carrying Divine Blessings.

Conservation not conversation haha.

Leave it to Jake to only do smart political moves by accident. If he had tried this, it would have fallen flat. Now I kind of hope one of the new young idiots tries something so Jake can shake the biggest stick around.

So is Miranda going to encourage the rumors that she is sleeping with Jake so she doesn't have to deal with the soon to be lots of young masters seeing her as a golden ticket?

Tucker Glick

Now they all see the real power (its Sylphie)

Sogala

Thank you for the chapter

Zizawah

Jake accidentally getting things right yet again. It never gets old. Thanks for the fun chapter!!

Loststar7

Yeah that wasn’t a fun trip. Uncle Jake can deal with all these people for you.

mitchell kaiser

Fun chapter, I’ve definitely missed the sassy side of Draskil. Thanks for the chapter!

Jan

I guess they will make the mistake to talk shit about Miranda, like call her a mere administrator without any power that dares to say she represents the mighty chosen.

John Burton

Thank you for the chapter Edit: Of course, gathering them (alone) wouldn’t have been feasible

Jack Dawson

Jake suggesting that they sit on actual chairs and not just the floor to make their lounging look deliberate is probably the greatest political move he's deliberately done without being coached by Miranda

Devillelouch

I dont feel we are going to be left on a big cliffhanger. Thank you for the chapter.

Posiden 300

I always love these chapters with Jake doing exactly what Miranda needs.

"Lizard indeed" mic drop..

Tftc Jake's suggestion shows some great Character development.

Xander

TFTC :) Heres hoping Draskil doesnt become like Worf in TNG and get his ass kicked every time we see him just to show how badass someone else is. Suggested edits: "young masters and mistresses" Me and my word variance schtick again. You use this phrase 5 times, verbatim, in this chapter. "Acolytes", "youngsters", "apprentices", "Novice order members", "Viper loyalists" the choices are pretty endless. "had *made arrangements to inform her* that " awkward phrasing like youre trying to hit a word count. Try "sent word" instead "gathering them *along* wouldn’t have" should be "alone"

Clint

The politicos see Jake expertly “showing” confidence to appear powerful, but he really just is confident because he really is powerful.

C0bra$

Thank u for the story

Chris Connolly

In terms of value, I think Miranda might be the most underrated side character in any story I’ve ever read. I can’t wait to see her really smack some people down at some point but even without a power flex, her status as Jakes right hand on earth and now with the galaxy is insane. The fact that her path was connected to his at such an early stage is probably going to mean that by the time Jake reaches godhood, she will already be a powerful S grade running his empire. Also, I assume there will be a time where it becomes clear that Jake’s own planet and galaxy is far more important to him than the order. When this happens, people will start to realize that Miranda is not just a puppet set to keeping is schedule and doing his busy work but truly a ceo in charge of everything Jake controls. Should be an awesome flex down the line.

Damascus

I'm confident that we get a plot development straight out of left field tomorrow that leaves us on the biggest cliffhanger in weeks. The last 2 weeks of chapters have been rather calm, conflict wise, and I think zogarths been saving something huge for tomorrow.

Ben Cox

Ah yes the time honored tradition of jake stumbling into political genius, also having an annoyed King meet draskil was always going to play out exactly like this. Tyftc

Corvid

King must have gained a fire affinity when he came back to life, because that was one savage burn

Tom C

Great stuff. Still want Jake to flex his aura a bit or something, really put these upstarts in their place. Mistreating Miranda? The fucking nerve! TFTC!

Timothy Spradlin

I agree, i see the same future, I also see the speculations that she is a mistress of his only growing with the empire as well lol

Bruce Sheplan

I think one of them is going to say/do something to slight Miranda… Im not sure if Jake will flex his Villy aura or just give them a beatdown… probably whatever he and Villy find the most amusing…

Jason Hardman

TYFTC! So, did Draksil get the wrong word, "conversation" instead of "conservation", as an intentional plot point showing he's a bit of a bafoon that barely understands the concept. Or was it a typo, with the v and s accidentally swapped? Here's the line: “You’re really insistent on that conversation stuff, huh?”

Ira Smith

Thanks for the chapter. Love these chapters

ABTelford

Ha! This power play being masterfully executed by Jake (accidentally once again) was great! Had me chuckling. And Miranda understanding everything is great too, showing she is one smart cookie who deserves her post. 😎

Strato Junon

"“You’re really insistent on that conversation stuff," conservation*

brjenness

lol...so much truth. political types always think of how to appear as something and rarely think of actually getting shit done.

WhiteLeeopard

Miranda is probably not yet getting the multiverse fully. She should just kick the people annoying her out of earth, Jake won't care, and the houses they belong to will likely assume Jake had given the order to do so and won't make a fuss. It's been a good couple of chapters before the break. Last one tomorrow.

brjenness

will be fun to watch if king and ss take draskil under their wings a little. both are smart enough to see draskil's appearance as a complete meathead will hide a lot of what's going on between his ears. don't change how he acts, but make sure he's thinking behind the scenes and has a better understanding of what the schemers around him are up to. somebody at some point will try to manipulate draskil. a little coaching might make him realize in some situations there might be more to gain by not instantly melting their faces.

Emmanuel Achaab

My favorite bit is Jake unknowingly being a political dynamo and others gawking at his accidental maneuvering lol

Exaiter

Love the accidentally of it 😂

Kt-x

Thanks for the chapter!

Daniel Golding

Miranda carries the Divine Blessing of the Verdant Witches. How is she not respected? This doesn't make a lot of sense. The Witches run everything. Draskill is such a loose cannon - this is great.

Vex

My take is while she has a Divine blessing, its one from God's related to the order which changes other order members view to not just the blessing, but also to strength. The order is heavily into might makes right so Miranda being relatively weak makes her slightly looked down upon. The only caveat to that rule it the true blessing since to look down upon a chosen is basically looking down upon the god.

Ty Cooper

I love when Miranda pulls off her power plays. Damn she is smooth... and witches are notoriously good planners.

nick

I cant wait for Miranda and artemis to meet. They are gonna cut Jake deep 😔

Rewdan

Draskil is such a boy just wants to show off.

Rewdan

Thanks Zogarth

joel southard

Thank you for the chapter

John

If I remember correctly, pre-chosen ceremony sort of time, that is how Draskill was explained to be... quite the thinker and schemer underneath the meat head persona. He lets it slip that he is even taking politics classes at the academy when he asks if Jake is too after refusing to cut the line at the Emberflight which Draskill thinks was a political power play.

Lemonsqueezy

I can actually see this happening in the next chapter or two. Jake is definitely going to threaten, kill, or kick out anyone that is insistent on giving Miranda trouble. Miranda probably understands the Multiverse better than Jake. She is a political person, so she is trying to build diplomacy and protection of Earth. It is her job and path. She gets XP and levels by solving issues diplomatically rather that just killing or kicking them off the planet. Jake is a different story, he gets his levels by hunting and killing. Miranda is the brains and Jake is the muscle.

Lemonsqueezy

Jake is going to have to lay the smackdown on these people. I can see some threats or death happening soon. Draskil's desire to remove an ocean is not going to happen. Jake has always wanted Earth to remain as close to nature as possible. He will never agree to remove an ocean for the sake of fitting more infrastructure and people. Earth will remain sparsely populated, and major city centers will have to be on other planets in the Solar System or other star systems entirely. I see Earth becoming a capital world where only Earthlings and government figureheads can reside, and as long as Jake is around Earth will remain that way.

Blutako

Dude I love Miranda's calculating plans, I live for them, I also love Miranda ordering Jake around, I hope we get that next episode while they discuss and solve the political environment of the planet

Blutako

Of course, we all now that when Jake does something smart in a social or political setting, 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the time he didn't do it on purpose

Blutako

"Lizard"

Blutako

Facts, but remember he did spend a little while getting lectured on political things during the end of the milky way prima event, purely so he didn't accidentally f**k up what work others put in for his sake, so its highly possible its a result of Miranda's effort,

Blutako

Has anyone else been picturing the lizard meme head on the forest king, but instead of smaking a screen he's smacking draskil, and he himself is saying lizard over and over? Or am I just chronically addicted to the lizard meme?

Blutako

Also, thank you zogarth, been too distracted to thank you for the amazing story in a while, I always love the effort and chapters and 5 a week, its absolutely wonderful

John Durrett

And the King really needs to blow off some emotional steam, so hopefully this will be very therapeutic for both. Thankfully SS is there to provide calm and reason to both should either be listening

LemonPerson

Think Jake needs NA or Yggdrasil to slide Jake some mortal Artemis stories. Jake needs some ammunition to fire back lol

brjenness

hey, being serious for a change. when you become a godking are you then on the emperian stages/steps or do you have something like 10 steps at godking them move up?

John Durrett

It was Jakes intelligence that suggested to Sword Saint for them to sit in chairs while they recovered with a crowd incoming, to which the SS whole heartily agreed. Thats neither random or accidental, but planned intelligence which the Sword Saint agreed with. That people continue to treat Jake like an idiot savant is beyond me. Seems to be a lot of people out there that like to kick dogs.

John Durrett

tyftc Zog. Hopefully Drak and the King blowing off steam will have a net positive result.

Blutako

I would also like to know but given the pattern of E grades aren't even considered a start leaving 5 mortal grades and levels seem to increase in various increments of 5, and the whole god king being 10 god grades, I think 20 emperian steps would make sense

NovaZero

The ultimate power move Jake can do right now? Fall asleep.

brjenness

reminded me of the sloth. Wonder when he'll show up again? maybe work with the king conquering worlds and the king running them.

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Booksaregood

Which chapter is the one where he storms back from killing hakan and world

brjenness

it does help him reestablish himself quite spectacularly and draskil is tough enough he doesn't need to hold back much. so chance for good skill testing.
