It had been well over a month since the beginning. The Viper’s avatar and Artemis found themselves observing the meditating Jake once more, having both spent a lot of time there recently, especially in the last few days. Throughout this time, Artemis had grown increasingly nervous, and while Vilas maintained his calm demeanor, he admitted to also beginning to feel a tinge of worry.

He’d felt the emergency repairs he’d done to Jake’s soul become unwound, which in itself was alarming enough if it hadn’t come in concert with his soul in general experiencing extreme damage and decay. If the First Sage wasn’t involved in this matter, he would have tried to do something, even if he knew he likely couldn’t.

Trying to wake up Jake right now wasn’t an option. Even if they somehow managed to trigger his survival instinct, neither of the two gods were sure Jake could return with his mind intact if they stepped in. No, the only one who could wake up Jake right now was Jake himself.

“This level of soul damage…” Artemis muttered as yet another day had passed with Jake seemingly only growing weaker.

“Is still recoverable if he succeeds,” the Viper continued her sentence. “The amount of Records that will flood his beings should allow him to recover, and surely the system will be interested in not leaving him with any permanent damage.”

“We both know the system doesn’t care either way,” Artemis said curtly. “Even if he succeeds, it won’t automatically heal his soul and return him to peak condition.”

“Not directly, no,” Vilas shook his head. “But if he can capitalize and make use of his success, he can speed up his recovery to a degree where the damage is almost considered insignificant.”

Artemis remained quiet and didn’t counter despite clearly not being in full agreement. Not that the Viper could blame her. Again, the only reason he had trust was due to the combination of the First Sage and Jake’s Bloodline.

Hours passed with Jake only growing worse at an increasingly rapid rate. At this point, even the Viper was beginning to show signs of genuine worry, but that’s when there was a change… in that the changes stopped.

The deterioration paused in an instant as if Jake’s soul had frozen. Artemis and Vilas both instantly noticed, with the hunter goddess looking to the Primordial for insight.

“I reckon it’s a good thing,” the Viper shrugged, not able to provide her with the knowledge she sought. Usually, when people went through something similar to what Jake was going through right now, they were far more powerful and capable of handling it. They didn’t face the extra challenge of also having their souls slowly break down throughout the process.

“It shouldn’t be bad…” Artemis muttered, her voice full of concern as she returned to observing Jake closely.

The Viper didn’t say anything and simply joined her as they both waited silently. As a side note, Artemis had been slowly growing even bolder as the last month progressed, with nearly all traces of reverence she usually held for someone like the Viper gone. It had all been overshadowed by concern, and Vilas guessed she would be horrified looking back on her behavior once things had calmed down.

Not that he blamed her… in fact, it only made the Viper think of the woman Jake had chosen more highly. She seemed to genuinely care, something that was a rarity in the multiverse, where individualism and ego were seen as prerequisites to attain true power.

A couple of hours passed with Jake in a state of stasis. His soul was neither improving nor deteriorating further, and as more time passed, this could become an issue.

While Jake’s soul was in flux, the damage it had sustained had yet to be cemented. If he stayed in a state where he was heavily injured for too long, he risked the damage actually becoming permanent or at least far harder to heal in the future. That’s why, even if his condition not deteriorating further was a good sign, this still wasn’t a significant improvement.

It was entirely possible that even if the First Sage and Jake were able to pull it off, Jake would simply be too slow to do it in time. Risk and reward had to go hand in hand, so it was natural that even the First Sage was willing to incorporate some level of risk in his lessons to ensure there would be a proper reward towards the end. Also, his Master hadn’t known Jake for that long and perhaps didn’t have time to fully understand Jake and his Bloodline.

The more the Viper thought about it, the more he considered this a possibility. Jake’s Bloodline was chaos incarnate to those who relied on prediction, as his instincts were of a transcendent nature, making them completely unpredictable. That’s how he’d managed to screw up the machinations of some of the most competent gods in the multiverse… but perhaps it had also caused the First Sage to make a minor miscalculation.

This line of thought made the Viper feel some actual concern, but just as they started to truly dominate his mind… There was another change.

In an instant, the stasis was gone, and Jake’s soul began to rapidly decay once more. The Viper saw Artemis’ eyes open in distress, with the Viper also having to hold back a frown as he feared for the worst. However, just before the two could fully conclude something had gone wrong, a pulse of power erupted from Jake’s body.

The Bloodline that had appeared dormant for over a month roared to life as the sound of a heartbeat echoed throughout the room. It gave Jake a second wind of power, and just as the deterioration was about to begin again, a second heartbeat echoed.

Neither of them knew why this was happening, as no one could see what was truly happening to Jake. This could be the moment Jake turned the tide and succeeded, or a final scream for survival from his Bloodline desperately trying to save itself.

Once more, the answer to this question came swiftly and decisively as a new aura erupted.

With a final heartbeat, the potent presence of his Bloodline was joined by another type of power that both gods recognized. This power seeped out from Jake’s body, overflowing his vessel and soul as they both felt something even more familiar from the power Jake had uncovered:

The faint trace of divinity.

However… despite this development, the Viper knew that the danger was from done as Jake had just unlocked something no mortal mind was capable of handling, and as counterintuitive as it seemed, all they could hope was that Jake hadn’t found too much success.

--

Jake watched silently as the cracks spread out from the golden arrow’s point of impact. As they spread, something exited from behind the gate, releasing a wave that washed over Jake mere seconds later.

Standing firm, Jake resisted the wave as he felt like he was standing in a running river. At the same time, countless visions and ideas flooded his mind, all of them nonsensical as far too much information was forced into his head at once.

However, before Jake’s mind had time to succumb to the stress, the current subsided, and the golden gate was revealed once more. There, in the middle of the gate, the golden arrow still sat half-penetrated with cracks spreading out from it, with the current having come from these cracks continuing to expand.

Luckily, the destruction of the gate had stopped rather quickly, leaving only a small section of it slightly damaged with the arrow sticking out and a few cracks leaking out what Jake had indeed confirmed to be what he’d suspected.

Flying closer to the place on the gate where the cracks were, Jake realized the oppressiveness from the realm he found himself in was entirely gone. The wave of concepts had washed everything away, and the continued leakage created what was effectively a defensive field close to the gate.

Reaching the gate, Jake began to feel countless insights worming their way into his brain once more. Odd images flashed in his mind, wayward thoughts drifted through, and odd sensations he couldn’t at all comprehend dominated his body, but Jake tried to filter all of these out and focus.

Closing his eyes, he moved his head close to one of the cracks in the gate and allowed the leaking concepts to seep into him.

At this point, Jake already knew he had succeeded. All he had to do was consolidate everything and mentally acknowledge his own success by stepping out of the realm he had found himself in. However, that wasn’t his plan.

Jake had wanted to upgrade his Meditate skill, yes, but he’d wanted to do so in part to help completely heal his soul before he could evolve to B-grade. Now, his soul was even more damaged, but he knew it wasn’t the same kind of fundamental damage as when he’d broken Palate. No, it was the kind of damage his new meditation skill would allow him to heal, which still left Palate a broken mess.

He realized that even with a better meditation skill, he couldn’t simply fix Palate. He had corrupted some of the Records within the skill, and it wasn’t simply a matter of “healing” anymore. It needed to be purposefully repaired, the broken Records replaced, and even the corrupted part either reabsorbed or expunged entirely.

Villy had helped Jake stabilize Palate initially by using his Transcendent skill to effectively apply a plaster that allowed certain parts of the skill to work while purposefully sealing away other aspects to reduce damage.

Now, Jake had torn off the plaster and was just waiting for the damage to spread. The long period of stabilization had allowed the skill to calm down somewhat, but shortly, Jake knew it would begin to tear away at him. Perhaps Villy could help Jake again, or perhaps Jake could fix the skill through enough study, but Jake had another plan.

He would make use of this brief moment where the corrupted Palate was fully unsealed but hadn’t had time to tear itself apart yet.

Touching the gate directly, Jake’s eyes opened wide as he suppressed a scream from the insane influx of concepts invading his body. Knowledge and concepts that no C-grade was capable of approaching flooded his mind, threatening to destroy it, but just before it had the chance, Jake used the final bit of his willpower to respond to a system prompt he had already summoned before touching the wall:

Do you wish to experience the forming of a High-Record Fragment related to the path of the Malefic Viper? Uses remaining: 2

Warning: experiencing a High-Record Fragment will consume 2 charges.

There was no time for hesitation as Jake promptly accepted and was swept away by the system in that very moment, a mind flush with concepts and thus Records to further feed what was to come.

--

“Seems like he found some success,” the Viper smiled as the faint aura of divinity spread throughout the chamber from Jake. It was stable, subdued, and not at all overwhelming, making Vilas believe that Jake had managed to take only a peek.

“He actually did,” Artemis said with astonishment. “However, he’s not entirely out of the woods yet, and I wouldn’t celebrate before he opens his eyes.”

“That’s fair,” Vilas shrugged, his worry significantly reduced if not eliminated entirely. He was already looking forward to what kind of skill Jake would get, but going by the aura in the air, he kind of already knew.

Artemis was right, though. It was best to wait and see until he opened his eyes, as who knew what Vilas’ dear little Chosen had going through his mind. Hopefully, he would just take the win and disengage his mind from the space he found himself in sooner rather than later.

Though, of course, that wasn’t the kind of person Jake was.

As the two gods watched, Jake’s aura changed slightly. It took on aspects of the Viper’s presence, and before Artemis could ask Vilas if he knew what was going on, Jake disappeared from the room, whisked away by the system.

“What ha-“

“Just wait,” the Viper said, his eyes wide open as he had a big grin on his face, having finally realized what Jake was trying to do. The result of combining two skills and opportunities like that wasn’t something Vilas had even considered, but he would definitely be interested in hearing the outcome from Jake later on.

Still assuming he returned with his mind intact, of course.

--

Jake’s mind was sent adrift, but with the help of the system meant to allow him to experience the Legacy of the Malefic Viper, his head cleared up with the countless concepts flooding his being tuned out. They were still there, but suppressed.

This had been a massive gamble, but Jake reckoned that, seeing as he was experiencing the world as the Malefic Viper when using Path of the Heretic-Chosen, the system would selectively choose what he could actually detect and feel during the visions in order not to overwhelm his mind.

If not, there was no way Jake could have walked away from experiencing being an S-grade dragon fighting Valdemar without being completely and utterly wrecked mentally. Luckily, his gamble had indeed paid off, and with the help of the system, he managed to remain lucid despite having so much unprocessed knowledge trying to flood his mind.

In the vision itself, Jake had naturally entered it focusing on Palate of the Malefic Viper. He had been unsure if it was even an option, but in his defense, he had briefly checked before going to touch the wall leaking concepts.

Once more, Jake found himself inhabiting the body of the Malefic Viper. He wasn’t immediately sure what grade or anything the Viper was during this vision, as Jake found himself a passenger in a Viper simply walking through a busy city street. Villy was in a humanoid form that Jake didn’t recognize, which honestly wasn’t a surprise, seeing as the Viper liked to change how he looked quite often back then.

As the Viper walked, he occasionally touched the side of a wall on the street or perhaps a pillar. There was even a time when he subtly kneeled down and placed his palm on the ground. Every time he did so, his hand let off a faint glow of magic before the snake god continued, leaving behind a near-undetectable trace of mana.

Through the eyes of the Malefic Viper, Jake got a good look at the city they were walking in. The entire place was surprisingly modern, reminding Jake a little of Earth from about a hundred years before the integration, though of course with the expected magic touch that came with the system.

Large stores lined the busy city streets, each of them looking very expensive. Jake also got the feeling this wasn’t some low-level city at all. Most of the people in the street were around C-grade, with plenty of B-grades mixed in, all of them acting as if they were weak F-grades. Not a single person was flying, but everyone just walked at a steady pace.

Jake was curious about what this vision was all about; however, he soon got his answer. The Malefic Viper went to a small cafe and ordered a drink before sitting casually outside, and as he did so, he looked toward a tall building in the distance. It was adorned with gold and definitely looked like the most opulent building around, and right there on the front were two words spelled out with massive, expensive-looking gemstones:

Auction House.

Upon seeing this, Jake was certain of two things. First of all, the Viper wanted something from that auction house, and second… no way in hell he was going to pay for it.

Thanks for the chapter. I can't wait to read the next one.

"Touching the gate directly" is how I read it

Strato Junon

"Teaching the gate directly" should be touching

Corvid

He did a good job Teaching that gate who was boss. This is either going to be the best payoff ever on Friday or the absolute worst wait ever. Either way, seeing the viper run a con for some shinies is gonna be legendary. Or actually, mythical

"The Bloodline that had appeared dormant for over a moment roared" - month? And later far from done?

Thanks for the chapter!

I’m thinking that Jake will be able to use the concept of desolation in his archery skills once he’s fixed palate.

John Burton

At least now we know how mortals become gods and why so many fail to become gods as well

Orod

Damn, I was at least expecting the upgrade notification today. Can't wait to see the skill descriptions and how many levels he gains from what he just did. This also gives him a solid footing for when he gets to S grade and starts killing God's

yo dude

It'd be interesting to have some Eron's hypothesis included in Jake's theory of divinity

Brandon Johnson

"Jake had wanted to upgrade his Meditate skill, yes, but he’d wanted to do so in part to help completely heal his soul before he could evolve to C-grade." Shouldn't that be evolve to B-grade?

Ritsu

An auction house with plenty of B-grades catering to it probably is run by high B-grade or low A-grade people. Since Villy was still throwing a tantrum throughout B-grade, I'm guessing this was A-grade Villy. Can't be C-grade since no-one else on his planet reached peak C-grade before he annihilated it. Can't be S-grade either since there wouldn't be anything worth stealing at that point. I don't think we've gotten an A-grade vision yet.

IntenseSushi

Tftc. Villy like I receive items, you receive death

Chris Connolly

Great point! Totally forgot about the core in there. In order to fix palate I’d imagine he’s going to have to get a pretty damn good idea of the concept of desolation. Can’t wait to see what he does with it

Cory S.

Great chapter. Looking forward to more and to see what Jake ends up with after this is all over.

Spencer Miller

Did the First Sage’s Meditate skill help him form Transcendences? Also, tftc.

ABTelford

This chapter was top notch! Fantastic story telling! And I am excited for tomorrow !…though also worried we’re in for an epic Friday cliffhanger. 😉

Woot! Tftc Looking forward to the rest of the week. Man it feels good finally seeing pallet getting fixed. I am so curious what he gets from the Desolation world core fragment. That has been kicking around for a long time now. The turd covered cheeto was still messing with primas when this messed up.

Clint

I vote both. Great vision/palate/desolation core payoff on Friday. Meditation cliff over the weekend.

David Hall

Nice stopping point for the weekend. I'm interested of how villy plans to steal the declaration of independence but it isn't a pivotal point within a sequence. Though to answer the question, he's obviously going to eat it. This vision is about Palate of the Malefic Viper.

itsdlow

“The Bloodline that had appeared dormant for over a moment roared to life as the sound of a heartbeat“ Moment -> Month TFTC!!!

Ben Cox

Can't wait to see Villy's idea of "peaceful bartering" tyftc

Connor

Thanks for the chapter

Matthew Smith

You reckon Jake is going to usurp the skill and make it Palate of the Primal Hunter due to his bloodline doing its bs and having to replace some records in the original palate to stabilise it?

marloes

The Bloodline that had appeared dormant for over a moment roared to life . (shouldn't moment be " month" in this context?)

Jeryd Greer

I can only hope this all wraps up on Friday.

Jeryd Greer

He’s gonna consume the building or part of the city, I think. His touching the different places was to create a space where his mana was a network like his stomach?

Fyrtue

I'm calling that he mutated Palate to a race skill like he did with his anomalous soul and its name changes to "of the Primal Hunter."

M C

That does make more sense. I read it as “reaching”.

DocSmitty

It already does, just not his name? Lots of skills, notifications, etc reference primal hunter

Arieh Sochaczevski

Thanks for the chapter! I’m going to laugh hard when it turns out the vision has nothing to do with Palate.

Daniel

the Viper knew that the danger was from done. —-> far from done.

Carl Never

Poor art is in for a hell of a ride trying to care for jake. He better grow her a divine banana mussa

Thomas

Was thinking I could pay to read farther ahead then realized I already, thanks for the chapter

tigerfishie

Yet another chapter that had me talking out loud 🙏🙏 Tyftc!!!

Patryk

Or more naturally imo, 'far from gone'. Also 'Teaching the gate' -> 'Touching the gate' (or reaching) I believe, though others mentioned it earlier Edit: Also, 'The amount of Records that will flood his beings' -> '[...] his being'

brjenness

are palate records corrupted or are some of them too powerful for jake's soul to handle? if the second is true, he just needs to make his soul as strong as a god's...maybe find a gate to poke with an arrow and absorb a bunch of concepts.

Roy Boy Meyer

So he used the heretic chosen skill for High records, focus on palate with the influx of divine records and concepts. Earlier he mentioned wanting to upgrade to mythical or divine skill ? So palate will become mythical or divine ? The viper used touch of the Malefic Viper in his record fragment? Omg what will happen with this upgrade skill? Will he be able to expand his domain by touch? Absorb powers or attacks into his palate and directly nullify them through the core of desolation inside? That will mean that the nullifying powers of the dragon will just be absorbed by his palate? Aarghhh..1001 theories now. Come on Zoggie..let us know tomorrow at least what the combined skill upgrade will do? Naming things like divinity, making the viper smile, and doing something on par with the sage. It must be utterly terrifying for even an A grade I bet

Korrasis

Yo we think alike I said that in this week's comments as well! High five!

Trumangolorian

Tyftc. Can't wait to see how everything turns out.

Jordan

This kind of stuff is so cool to me. The idea of these ancient secrets of the multiverse that Jake is tapping into, along with the mystery of the First Sage, is really good. I love it whenever we get arcs like this

khielira

Yeah, but Jake probably will have the same problem as he has will hunting a dragon. Luckily there are plenty of assholes but finding the right kinda of asshole might be a bit of a challenge. One strong enough to be a challenge but not so strong that Jake will have his butt beaten like a drum. Plus Jake wouldn't want to hunt a God who's cool/nice

brjenness

or... he gets upgrades to the skill he sees in the vision...since he chose palate, the system helps him upgrade palate fixing it in the process.

brjenness

I wonder what would have happened if Jake would have used the villy record boost invocation on palate while it was broken...maybe slowly replace op records with less op records that didn't blow him up?

Lemonsqueezy

"Jake had wanted to upgrade his Meditate skill, yes, but he’d wanted to do so in part to help completely heal his soul before he could evolve to C-grade. " Shouldn't it be "evolve to B-grade"? "Teaching the gate directly, Jake’s eyes opened wide" should be "Touching the gate directly".

Scott Conway

Been loving the chapters after the break! So happy this plot developed during the week and not on a Friday

Xander

TFTC :) Suggested edits: "The Bloodline that had appeared dormant for over a *moment* roared" I think you meant "month" "capable of handling, and as *counterproductive* as it" should be "counterintuitive" "before he could evolve to C-grade. " should be "B-grade"

Fyrtue

I'm optimistic in hoping that tomorrow is the vision and Friday is the big upgrade reveal cliff hanging the conversation with the gods for Monday.

Fyrtue

Definitely an interesting thought but I think he's worried about that desolation world core if he doesn't go big enough on palate.

noctsol

Oh boy. VIPER'S 12 : THE HEIST

Sambiani Lare

Gaaaah the cliffhangers. That's why I hate being catched up. I need to chill and accumulate chapters. It's just sooooo good💪🏽

Suzanne Pearson

I had a weird thought…. What if the vision is one of BOTH palette and Dragonmolt? Jake needs to trim/get rid of corrupted records and that is what dragonmolt basically does….

Stephen

Nah, vision will end on Friday... next week is catching back up with the going on at earth, and Monday the 13th we get the reveal

brjenness

won't be a cliffhanger. it will be a clifford-bartholamew-johnson hanger. always much worse when they use your full name.

Ty Cooper

Only time I have been able to let the chapters build up is when I am in the wilderness and my phone won't work. I find it odd that I now crave Mondays but it is soooooo good as you said.

Death56

"Teaching the gate directly, Jake’s eyes opened wide as he suppressed a scream from the insane influx of concepts invading his body." Typo here should be touching the gate directly

brjenness

I know man. heard it was going to be 7 days or some crazy shit like that

Ty Cooper

So good. Just think. He is already breaking the system this much in c-grade. Jake at s-grade is going to be so op.

Thenais

any chance he will gain the skill "uno reverse" ?

Ty Cooper

So stray thought. If the FS is messing with the system behind the scenes to give Villy a true friend that he can share all the forbidden knowledge he knows. Like Jake will be able to see the origins of whatever records and remember them. If he claims the origin he could claim the knowledge as his own via bloodline Harbinger.

Rob Lyon

Oh it's not going to be a peaceful barter it's going to be a heist I have a feeling that the Viper is trying to steal something from people stronger than him at this point

Ollie

Would love if Jake came out and said to Villy "i Know kong fu now", only he would get the reference

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

dan dyfe

"---evolve to C-grade." Isn't he already C-grade so it sould be B-grade.

Staudi

Thanks for the Chapter!

brjenness

when villy says combining two skills, he means...path and...invocation? did he invoke path or palate? and am I correct in assuming he meant "using two skills at same time" not "making 1 skill out of 2"

Xerecs

At this rate we aren't going to find out the outcome of both the meditate upgrade and the palate fix until monday..... XD

> Teaching the gate directly, Should be Touching right?

Andy Swearingen

How long has Jake been away from earth now ? Just wondering how old his nephew will be by the time he gets back

Dani

Does that mean Jake‘s new Meditate is going to be divine rarity, since he unlocked „a sliver of divinity“? Maybe even a new title. He got one for Eternal Shadow back in D grade. Its been so long since he gained a title outside a massive event. In the good old days he seemingly got one every 20 chapters or so.

Jason Hardman

TYFTC! Some edit suggestions: The amount of Records that will flood his beings should allow him to recover, -> will flood his being the Viper knew that the danger was from done -> the danger was far from done Teaching the gate directly, Jake’s eyes opened wide -> Touching the gate

Fyrtue

There were some people talking about that a few chapters back. I think the consensus is that his nephew is late teens maybe early 20s at this point.

Keion

So check list time Soul flame Puzzle Getting the rest of his legacy skills up? Shadow Jake? Hunt a true dragon Bow skills? Boot upgrade? Vist his hive daughter vespy? Oooh earths dungeon minga is making Gear upgrade? Get his second wife ….did I miss something? New katar from aronald maybe a time chamber session ? Predictions?

Keion

One/two more months in c grade then we found out more about the bloodline!!!!! I really think it’s a werewolf type

Starkly Glim

Here's a crazy theory: If I remember right, the First Sage had a transcendent skill that helped other people develop their transcendent skills. What if Jake's made Meditate into a transcendent skill? His bloodline was suppressed during the process and only minimally involved at the end, so what if?

kandiana

He had no such skill... He helped Viper to form base skill that later became Sagacity (and Sagacity is not a transcendent skill)

Sarianne

Really happy I didn't read this yesterday as now I only have to wait max 3 hours to learn more 😅

Thenais

Any change to his craddle of Alchimist flames ?

Anthony Smith

Isn't there a desolation core in Jake's palate ATM?

Devillelouch

Artemis is better Duskleaf for current reaction chapters. It will be interesting how many of the Villy livestreams she watches. Duskleaf can claim his "if its not alchemy, I dont care" throne.

Missing a "far" in the following paragraph. Parker Bond

Anyone else in the Archer tier suddenly not getting new chapters? At first I thought it was just because of Thanksgiving but I doubt that the break also includes Cyber Monday. Maybe there is a larger break I'm unaware of?

Parker Bond

Nevermind, I found an authors note so it looks like this is expected: "Finally, just a little warning: I won't be posting any chapters next week on the 27th and 28th of November 2025, as I’ll be away from home. I’m still away over the weekend and may not have a chapter ready for Monday, the 1st of December, either, but time will tell. Anywho, on to today’s chapter!"

Alexander C Hyde

“The amount of Records that will flood his (being)beings should allow him to recover, and surely the system will be interested in not leaving him with any permanent damage.”

Alexander C Hyde

However… despite this development, the Viper knew that the danger was (far) from done as Jake had just unlocked something no mortal mind was capable of handling, and as counterintuitive as it seemed, all they could hope was that Jake hadn’t found too much success.
