Still can't believe that's the real theme, reminds me of those "VideoHelper" rights-free CDs for promo editing – every track just-enough like a real soundtrack song but not quite, with titles hinting at which rip-off you were getting. This track would be called like "Master of Commanders" or "Filler's Crossing".

Very funny to hear another Sorkin character bring up the fact that they "should" be in a relationship with someone with a weird sense of resentment and entitlement. It's like the most toxic, pathetic, and possessive way to view the world and he just keeps having everyone talk about relationships that way.

Anthony

It’s been fun going through the Newsroom (especially when it’s so determined to “engage” with journalist ethics and whatnot) with Will’s J School point of view on top of the usual astute observations. Really paints a picture of just how silly Sorkin’s various grievances actually are. It was also nice hearing Luke shout out the title track off of Dylan’s Saved after going on record as a hater of the Christian Era. The Shot of Love is for everybody, buddy, and we’re glad to have you aboard.

Yeah, especially when the character who they are desiring is clearly a stand in for his self conception

in the newsroom, straight up “sorkin it.” and by “it”, haha, well. let’s justr say. Journalism

Paul

Thanks gents. I’m Sorkin it right now!

Casey Anthony was found not guilty because the prosecutor could not and did not prove her guilt. There was plenty of reasonable doubt in her case, so we should all be relieved by the verdict.

I guess I’ll hit my “How does he get away with the misogyny?” macro. By “get away with” I mean liberals don’t even seem to notice. One of the fundamental problems with Sorkin - illustrated in the ratings clip - is that his disfavored characters often make perfectly good points but those points have no effect on anything. If Sorkin wants it to be about “facts and logic” then the arguments have to *matter* in some way and they never do.

Yes. The story there for Jeff Newsroom was the way Nancy Grace - a truly noxious character - and others were basically a lynch mob unconcerned about any actual justice. Sorkin seems to understand that underlying fact but doesn’t seem to understand that that meta-story is potentially worth covering, presumably because it involves the interests of the wimmen folk.

Forgive me if this was ever brought up in your Sorkin coverage. I believe I’ve followed every episode of your Studio 60 series and this one but I’ve yet to hear you guys talk about this bit of very crucial piece of Sorkin-lore that highlights why he has such a gripe and grievance with the internet and specifically the “populist” blogosphere and that is that when West Wing was airing, Sorkin would take part in TV Internet forums, specifically one called televisionwithoutpity.com. He would post anonymously at the time but very quickly people sussed out his identity and the interactions became very quickly contentious, especially when it came to the misogyny of his writing and how much credit he takes for the writing of his shows. The full details of this are in this blogpost from 2006 that lays out the full timeline of the events as well as subsequent updates that clarifies/adds details. http://bitchkittie.blogspot.com/2006/02/long-back-story-of-aaron-sorkin-west.html?m=1 The author of this post has also appeared on your Sorkin predecessor pod, The West Wing Thing and I also recommend hearing that episode to get more details on this. It’s that kind of juicy Sorkin lore that adds some depth anytime internet stuff comes up in his work.

Asking as an American, are we absolutely certain that 75% of Americans aren’t idiots beneath contempt?

the observation that "every broadcast at the Newsroom seems to be controversial and there's no such thing as a slow news day" resonated with me. It has a lot to do with how television production has changed over the years but there are older TV shows (90s Trek is the archetype in my mind) where the lower-stakes, "hangout" episodes that just let the characters bounce off each other and interact without the fate of the universe hanging in the balance are amongst the fan favourites. Or, to paraphrase a bit: if everything on the Newsroom is a weighty crisis that jeopardizes the fate of Journalism and the Republic, then nothing is.

Suck me. Suck me very dick.

Though not technically a Burton directed movie, Nightmare Before Christmas is a very cute and clever picture, I think. Maybe having small children has disposed me to liking it. Still, repeated play of an animated picture soundtrack can become grating (Disney) and I don’t think that one does. Maybe best thought of as a Danny Elfman vehicle, honestly. Hope you have a higher opinion of Elfman than you do Burton.
