I like how the lawyer says someone can’t be a character witness because “she looks like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” when the entire point of that book is that the title character is a person of very high character who separates herself from a corrupt society and wreaks righteous vengeance on it. Isn’t that whom you would want as a character witness? But I’m reminded of how in the west wing the idea that a woman would have unorthodox non-ear piercings is canonically evidence that she is unserious and unprofessional.

Two observations on the “big and important” vs “insurgent” status of Will McAvoy/ACN: McAvoy must be an important personage who dates hot celebrity women and has Joe Biden’s phone number because he’s an author surrogate/wish fulfillment/power fantasy (albeit one that Sorkin interrogates critically a bit more than in Studio 60, as you pointed out in this ep). However, ACN itself can never be more than marginal because it must be small enough that the things it does never affects the course of world events and politics, a strange self-imposed Temporal Prime Directive that Sorkin unwittingly takes on as a constraint on his writing.

In terms of the daunting task of watching to boldly flee in one sitting, I have a suggestion, ( I'm not sure if somebody has thought of this before) When to boldly flee was originally released on the channel awesome website it was released as though it was a miniseries, I think each episode was around 20 minutes, and there were like seven parts. It was only LATER compiled into a film for the DVD release I think I'm not really sure if there's any documentation on where each episode started and ended in its original format, but if you're able to figure out where all the ACT brakes are you could probably spread it across multiple episodes The next mini series after the news room? cx

That scene you guys mentioned where McAvoy assigns his female intern the task of answering obscure questions about who worked on which Pulitzer-winning Broadway musical is such a Sorkin move that it feels almost like parody. Could Sorkin himself answer those questions? Has he even been to all those musicals? I highly doubt it. And yet he clearly thinks it's important to possess that sort of cultural knowledge. I think this scene speaks to what Luke has observed about Sorkin and the brand of elite liberalism he fetishizes, where highbrow cultural signifiers just become this sort of vague shorthand for virtue, expertise, and moral seriousness. This is exactly like when Obama told his speech writers to listen to John Coltrane while they work. Same cringey shit lol
