It has always been common wisdom that governments could always magic up money (and run up the dreaded deficits) for banks, big business and weaponry, but that it was simply economically impossible to do so for the common man. I hope the left uses this period as a fresh example of what bunkum this is and has always been.

I recently read Barbara Ehrenreich's Fear of Falling, which is about the changing tastes and attitudes of the American professional class. There's a clear pattern throughout where a crisis puts a spotlight on inequality, a brief national outrage, and then the professionals get steered onto some sort of side issue instead of, you know, capitalism. The process is clearly at work again right now. I'm thankful that people like Luke and Jeff Stein are still drawing attention where it needs to be.
