It's time for another Patreon exclusive reaction!

A few of you have mentioned that Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro should be watched together. I see that Grave of the Fireflies might be coming to Netflix in mid-September, so I'm going to hold off on including either of those films in this poll.

princess mononoke is the best ghibli movie imo. it has everything. epic fight scenes, interesting plot, great world building, amazing soundtracks.

Erik Stevenson

100% agree. Fingers crossed for it, but honestly this is a murderers row of great movies and I'll be happy with whatever wins.

XanderWhat

Didn't know Grave of the Fireflies was coming to Netflix! Maybe I'll have to watch it again ☹️😭

Razor Bikini

No The Boy and the Heron?

kikoyito

Ya ll have no idea how excited I am for mononoke

Thomas Richter

I have no idea what any of this is about.

RationallySassy

I know so many people love Princess Mononoke and, yes, it is amazing, but gosh I love all of those other movies more, haha

Charlotte PhD.

I love Princess monoke, I'll be 100% happy if it will the poll, but I must admit I have a special place in my heart for Howl's moving castle ♥️.

Julia Burch

Still shouting into the void for Howl's Moving Castle 😭

Baggie Mark

I have no clue about any of these films, so I think I will have to leave it to the rest of you to pick a good one for us to watch with Nat..

Nathan Elkin

Do another poll for dub vs sub. All Ghibli movies get a lot of funding for American voice actors, so many people are willing to watch it both ways.

Jason Gillman

No love for Kiki? Come on now

Edward Rahardjo

They're all mandatory if you like Studio Ghibli. But Princess Mononoke I consider a masterpiece.

Neverender

I love Kiki’s but Howl’s is on this list. That comes first for me.

Kelvin

It's the Princess for me

Raieldon

Sure hope we get around to Only Yesterday. If I was tailoring a list of anime for your tastes, which tend to be more grounded and personal, I can't imagine it not being on there.

Kcia S

Please do Howl with dubbing!! <3

Christopher Henderson

I have a feeling we'll get AOT reaction within a year fingers crossed.

addnid07

I always liked subs more. especially because of how moro sounds so differently on dubs.

Mastervodo

+1 for Mono! I love the little rattle-head thingies!

addnid07

unrelated but I hope you watch the girl who leapt through time one day. it's amazing animated film.

Christopher Vollick

No spoilers, but just so you know these cover a wide range of tones. Spirited Away (as a baseline I know you've seen) is essentially a kids movie with some scary bits, but Mononoke is not for kids at all. It's great, but it's a bit violent (for good reason). And Nausicaa is I think a bit dry for a kid, but good for teens and up. Whereas Howl and Kiki are more cutsey. So, all of them are good! But I don't think you would enjoy Mononoke going into it expecting a fun cutesy kids romp. It's a movie for an older audience.

Erik Stevenson

Dubs are better for first time reactions, reactors can just watch the movie instead of having to read the subtitles. Ghibli does incredible dubs as well.

Athenor

To late for this poll but for future polls I recommend Porko rosso:)

wb

I wish I could vote for both howls and monoke

Keshav Batra

I’d love for you to react to lion King if you haven’t already

vlocke67

mononoke! it's my favorite

Mike Hell

Your Name is a great choice, everyone I know who has seen it—even those who dislike anime—have all loved it

Marina Fuller

Dub howls moving castle PLEASEEE

Mike Hell

I remember being 16 and buying the Princess Mononoke DVD at Best Buy, not knowing much about it other than Claire Danes voiced the titular character and it was like an Asian Ferngully lol I’ll always love the English dub of Mono more because I watched it first and it was one of the first Ghibli films I experienced. So yeah that’s my pick, but these are all great films.

Jabari Weathers

Mononoke is Miyazaki's best imo.

Skellyp

Can’t wait for AoT to be on one of these poles! That will be the day!

Paul G

Haha no Grave of the Fireflies

Garrick Smalley

It looks like I am one of the unlucky few to vote for Nausicaa. It is one of the better films out there, simple in some ways but profound in others. I do think you will enjoy it when you finally see it.

Christopher Robles

I think Kiki's and Howls are the two best. Nausica is beautiful but the story imo is a bit convoluted. I couldn't get into Mononoke

Albiezushi

I've seen My Neighbor Totoro 300 times since I was little and is my fav! GotF is not necessary to watch together with it, the tones do not match at all LOL.

AlimarM

I hope later polls she'd consider other anime movies, I think "Your Name" or "A Silent Voice" would be a great patreon exclusive watch along, and even for youtube as those films aren't as copyright heavy as studio ghibli movies.

Harry Reece

Tell me you didn’t read Natalie’s post. Without telling me you didn’t read Natalie’s post 😂

Erik Stevenson

If she moves beyond Ghibli into other Anime, some incredible classics like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or Perfect Blue would be amazing to see.

Agent September 🏴‍☠️

Mononoke will win no doubt but I'm voting for Nausica because its incredible and will blow your mind

Brandon Tracy-Hurst

Whichever you choose, I hope you pick the dub. Mononoke and Howls both have amazing dubs

Kraackin

Please just watch them all. Mononoke, howls, kiki, Nausicaa, castle in the sky, boy and the heron prob my personal favourites. They are all so good. even ponyo, the cat returns

Kraackin

also do the dubs. All ghibli dubs are done amazingly with big name actors

Kraackin

i voted Nausicaa as well. I have an original production cell from the movie too :)

Eric Janssen

So…86% are Ghibli “fans” who had never heard of Miyazaki before Howl or Mononoke played Us theaters, and have thus never heard of Kiki or Nausicaa? Trust the EXPERTS. 😎 (So, guess there ‘s no hope of Castle of Cagliostro or Porco Rosso either?) And as for anime beyond Ghibli….you’re not READY for Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, Project A-Ko, or Galaxy Express 999. 😁 Although if you happen to get hooked on Netflix’s “Ranma 1/2” reboot, there just happens to be a “Ranma 1/2: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China” movie ready and waiting.

Lionbarber

I am a hardcore subs only anime fan but I totally agree about watching the Ghibli dubs, ESPECIALLY Howl and Kiki. Phil Hartman and Billy Crystal transform their respective roles and make the movie 10x more delightful.

Lionbarber

The poll is so tricky because these films do such dramatically different things. Kiki is cozy and gentle. Howl is tender, romantic, and redemptive. Mononoke is gritty, haunting, and advocates for a change in paradigm. AND NAUSICAA WILL GET THAT GODAMN SONG STUCK IN YOUR HEAD FOREVER

Lionbarber

Also 100% need to see Nat watch Your Name, Mirai, Paprika, Night Is Short, Walk On Girl- so many other amazing animated films outside of the Ghibliverse (but if you gotta pick one it's YOUR NAME and bring tissues)

Yani Dodge

I love Kiki's delivery service! I hope Nat watches it one day! :D

Robert Bonfante

I voted for Princess Mononoke. This anime was my first experience at a Ghibli movie and an important bridge from the period where I was heavily into dystopian, violent cyberpunk anime (Akira, Battle Angel, Ghost in the Shell) to the more thoughtful nuanced Ghibli films. Part of what attracted me to Princess Mononoke was the fantasy setting (I was a big fan of sword and sorcery anime too), and the action and violence, while shocking for a Ghibli film, fit right in with the intense offerings I was into in my younger anime days. Nausicaa and the Valley of the Winds was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and while it technically was made before Studio Ghibli was a thing, it was released and distributed by Studio Ghibli, so it checks all of the important Ghibli boxes.

addnid07

please watch it with subtitles. there are some big difference in some characters.

Jason

maybe can do Makoto Shinkai's movie poll someday in the future

Andrew langton

Nausicaä w for making the poll but its not going to win 😭😭😭😭

Eric Janssen

And technically you don’t “have” to watch Fireflies and Totoro together as if they were Infinity War and Endgame.- That’s just a fan anecdote: They’re two completely unrelated films, but when Miyazaki told studios Totoro was set in a peaceful 50’s postwar farming village, the studio reacted “A HAPPY postwar Movie??”, and Ghibli decided to double feature it with Fireflies' historical period story of postwar ruin and starvation. Otherwise….,that’s it. 🤷‍♂️

asha

i immediately chose howls moving castle it is my favorite studio ghibli movie !! but princess mononoke is beautiful and up too too. i’ll be happy with any of these i just love studio ghibli. also i love watching howls moving castle and a lot of ghibli films in english dub tbh but either way i’m good

Wild_Lee_Coyote

No bad pick here. I prefer Mononoke because it has so many nuances that still resonate today.

Samuel Vivian

I guess technically you're correct; the two movies aren't really a set. But, "Grave" and "Totoro" were usually shown together in the theater. Sometimes the theaters would show Totoro first, and then Grave, and people would just leave after Totoro, so Miyazaki said they had to show Grave first. I'm pretty sure that the Ghibli museum does exactly that. If you think about it, the viewing order makes sense, since Grave is heartbreaking, and Totoro is probably in the top 3 for "most heartwarming movies ever". Viewers need the emotional healing of Totoro after going through Grave.

Kubochaan

Howls is my favorite but excited for Mononoke! It's definitely still top 3! Really love that you're getting into Ghibli!! Thank you!!

Rumple

Tales of Earthsea!!! I know its not listed But damn I LOVED that movie and everyone hated it. it was made by His son Gordo and I think his son did a great job for his own first movie and Im sad that everyone hated it

Peanutx777

Amazing choices, would watch it in this order. and Nausicaa. Mononoke's english cast is amazing.
