This was not only the season finale, but the last episode aired on the original network (WB) so we weren't 100% sure we *were* getting a new season at the time.

Lets be reminded that Season 5 finale was marketed as a "SERIES FINALE" at the time. Unless you were online (which wasn't really a thing at the time), you didn't know they were moving the show from The WB to UPN. They filmed this season as if it were their last season.
