Honestly, no one will ever be able to convince me that "Darla" wasn't actually the First. That makes far more sense in context. The First is also trying to gain a foothold at the same time and would not want to see a rival get born into the world. Also, I don't buy a word of what Skip says about orchestrating everything. It's over the top, for one, he and this thing that's given birth to itself lacks all credibility. The First tried taking credit for bringing Angel back from hell in Amends; and Buffy had the most sensic response, "Some great evil takes credit for bringing you back and you buy it?" This new being hijacked Cordelia's body, lies, manipulated, killed, but now we're supposed to believe one of its lackeys that all of this has been orchestrated to get them here? Nah, don't buy it.
