Oh sure, one of the biggest snowstorms on record, probably thousands without electricity, and you stop working. Pfft. Just kidding of course. Stay warm, stay fed, and stay strong. I would be shocked if anyone doesn't understand.

The typewriter ribbon carries the ink. The physical keys lever up when you press the keyboard, pressing the ribbon into the paper - leaving the ink in the shape of a character. We're stuck with QWERTY keyboards still today - because in ancient times you needed to space the popular keys (yunno - like "a", "e" "i" and so on) across the board so the levers wouldn't stick together. Why do we use it today? Same reason our autos and railroad cars have wheels with the same spacing as Roman chariots. We're stuck with it.
