Next 4 Chapters

Hey Everyone,

I'm going to be working on Chapter 72 a little more later this evening, but I still have a few things to figure out with it. Didn't want you all waiting around for me, so I said I'd upload them and get your thoughts. How it leads into Chapter 73 was a problem and I feel like there's something missing, but I just need to think on it a bit more.

Thanks again for the understanding with the delay on chapters last week. Hopefully you'll enjoy this one. You'll be relieved to know we have an Appraisal in this batch. :P

Hope everyone had a great weekend! :)

All the best,
Brian

Thanks for the chapters!

Kurby

You evil evil man. I literally just layed down in bed to go to sleep. Now I gotta read these chapters first!

Karen Shelton

Whoa!! Got those out super quick. 🥳 can’t wait to read more of Coach. Thanks Brian. 😍

Kiwi

Thanks for the chapters, just in time to jump into bed and read. Don't know what I'm going to do at work tomorrow now though 😅

Kiwi

Wahoo take that Doc Ameye, Sal snagged ATHENA 🥳

Thomas Todd

Just woke up, it's a holiday here in the UK and this drops early. It's a good day

Thomas Todd

I really want to post the meme "He said it! he said the thing!"

UMCDaEMON pp

Love it. Never enough however :)

A great set of chapters and with the Prime skill definitely opens up a whole host of possibilities and getting all the Argento's into the pod to fix their damage will be great. Instead of terrifying first years with a teacher morphing into a Prowler combining Barry's ability with Prime would make an excellent simulation room for students to practice without losing limbs. Also like the idea of having tracker that give more traditional LitRPG stat guidance. I would consider maybe writing a connecting sentence between the last 3 chapters. Going from Coach to Fabi and Upgrade to Quest was slightly jarring so maybe add lines like "we need to show this to Quest this changes everything" or "I hope Upgrade or Fabi don't kill me when I show them this." It would just prep the reader for a passage of time between chapters. Also you are currently towing the line with how much Crafting Sal is doing with no immediate pay off and I don't want to see a repeat of Book 4. This is just my opinion but maybe limit crafting to improvements to the Elixer machine or Athena for the remainder of Book 5 (couple paragraphs) and stick with Dungeon Delving or Shade bashing for the remainder of this book. TL;DR: • Love Athena think it opens up a lot of changes to future growth for Sal and his guild. • Last 3 chapters need a better transition • IMO remainder of book needs to focus on action and the Shade climax.

Max

Question for chapter 70 Why would Sal need to check with Upgrade and Fabi and not only with Upgrade.  Upgrade is his teacher and mentor and this build does not use any essence programming.

Michael kulatschko

it feels a bit like you learned a new word and just had to use it a bunch...

Kiwi

We have the book name meaning!!!!! Fits perfectly too

Andrew Tobin

Book one comments: “Sal seems so OP…” look at him now!

Lisa Johnson

I like the last chapter. It not super exciting but it’s a great transition. I’m imaging or hoping next week will be all about dungeons, Shade and maybe a positive Guinea pig from Athena. Anthony?

R. Skye

Thanks for the chapters! I thought 72 read well. It covered Sal working through his imposter syndrome and covered why he needs to still take classes to better understand what he is doing. There is tension starting about his skill capability outpacing what they are ready to handle. I like the brainstorming session about solves. I think it will be interesting to see how many trackers the one iteration of Athena could viably support though Protocal does do city management if I remeber correctly. The difference would be power consumption... Protocal is tied into Ameye's infrastructure... Athena is not. I like the tracker concept as a way for people to remotely access their progression but I feel there needs to be a solve for their initial scans otherwise the bottleneck of needing everyone to go into the pod at least once could be rough given how in demand it will be.

A.J. Polanowski

Woohoo thanks for the chapters! We will all be your legion 😎

Feedback for Chapter 71 At least from my perspective, I don't think you hit the mood/feeling you were going for in this chapter.  Upgrade and Fabi are not funny at the start of the chapter - they are mean. Sal is afraid in this chapter and needs reassurance, but all he gets is feeling guilty. I really liked the third last sentence Upgrade said ("This is by far the best thing you've ever made, and a beautiful use of the Mythcrafter ability."). That is much more fitting for the character for me. I didn't know that I longed for a wholesome interaction between Sal and Upgrade, but after reading that paragraph, I knew it was something I needed. Upgrade was always teasing Sal, but she knew when it was appropriate. But what is much more memorable about Upgrade is that she has Sal's back and supports him when he is afraid. She always took her time to watch over him and make sure his build was safe. I miss this interaction, and I think this chapter could be a way to return to it.   I think you could have a chapter with a strong emotional impact if you changed some things about it. I would remove Fabi from this chapter because her dynamic is not helping. She also has nothing relevant to say in this chapter and the next. Also Sal needs to keep this invention secret. It makes no sense yet to involve Fabi, she's not part of the guildand she is no teacher. Instead, I would focus on the relationship of Sal and Upgrade. Sal needs his mentor and someone who can relieve his fears. Upgrade should take this situation seriously and her first reaction should not be mean and making Sal feel guilty. She could reassure him and tell him he build something beautiful but they need to discuss with Quest how they can implement that safely.   I think that could make the chapter memorable. Like it is right now I don't see myself coming back to this chapter to read it again.

Book Wyrm

Can I suggest ending the chapter with Legion and moving taking the piss outa sal to the beginning of the next chapter.😉 Think that slightly works better as this chapter is a bit of a climax for the book. The only thing you might be missing, is hype I think. Your writing style tends towards amping up the hype and then ending the chapter on a cliffhanger. I'd say this chapter ends in satisfaction. Making this chapter a bit an exception. I normally would n't post suggestions like this, just trying to help out.

Sam

Isn't Sal still 18? I don't remember him having a birthday?

joey sorrentino

Its weird, i really love the crafting but in the back of my mind i just keep thinking is he ever going back to school or actually get these projects working to progress the guild. I was kinda hoping for a scavenger run where his bot just flies around and finds all the dope shit.

Pickled Rick

Slight correction but Fabi is 100% a part of the guild as she is basically 2nd in command on the hierarchy with Upgrade in the role of advisor like a Captain who will take the support members under her wing.

joey sorrentino

The book 1 vibe is so different lol. Remember it started with him just flirting and banging chicks. Now hes like 100 years old and is too busy tinkering. Like im sure part of it is to show hes maturing and understanding the big picture but hes still a teen and teens who have sex are unlikely to stop especially when so many women are interested in him.

Dawn Zeleznik

I thought the trackers were to eliminate the need for people getting in the pod. Have I misunderstood that.

Dawn Zeleznik

I enjoyed the chapters. I reread 72 and something about Fabi being so quiet and not meeting Sal’s eyes seemed off to me. She’s always been a very direct character, maybe it’s that for you as well? It kind of pulled my attention from Quest’s comments because I was thinking, “what’s up with her ?” That’s really the only thing that stood out to me. I hope that helps. Normally I don’t like to comment on stuff like that because I realize you have continuity editors and just plain old editors looking for errors or deviations. Since you asked for our ideas about it I thought I would try to help this time.

Pickled Rick

It was actually part of my suggestion that Sal stop crafting for the remainder of the book. He has a machine that will build him gear, a machine that will make him potions to strengthen his essence gates and a machine that can show him how to improve his stats and hopefully his Silverson arts. Book 6 he could make a full size simulator with Barry's skill but for now Sal needs to actually use these new machines for all they are worth to get the Myth guild up and running.

Pickled Rick

I have a vague recollection of him having a party during the semester break (Book 4) but would need to reread the book to remember if it was a birthday or just a Saviours or Guild celebration.

Zwil

Really fun chapters, thank you!

Max

Chapter 72 I don't get why they should split the System from the machine. You wrote that it should be fine if it is associated with Coach. Why go the extra mile. Also it is kind of weird that they talk about Shade and Sal is all mysterious but nobody really cares. I would assume you couldn’t change the subject so quickly if Quest thinks his students could be in danger because the .5% chance hit because Sal changed the future on purpose. If Sal tells you “Don’t worry I have it under control “ I wouldn’t believe it. Major red flag. The only reason Quest and Upgrade are in the room is because Sal can not estimate consequences.

Sam

Think that Fabi is just a bit overwhelmed and feeling a little outclassed by Sal. This is, what, the 4th major item he has made since she met him? She is used to be considering one of the best and now could be wondering if she can even keep up with him.

Zachary Cash

"Flanks?" Is great.

M

These chapters are some of the most engaging of the book with key characters being more... in character. For Chapter 72, I personally do not understand the Athena => Legion distinction.

Pickled Rick

If Athena is your PC then Legion is the OS (Windows or Linux). Basically Legion is the rebranding of Quest's system while Athena is the machine that will house that system.

Ali Sha

Thanks for the chapters! I’m curious about how Athena actually works. Do people actually have to get in and be assessed first and then the trackers roll out and update the training plan? Or can people just skip getting in and it will work just off the trackers? If so it doesn’t make sense to me to make it a fancy tanning bed. Might be better as just a computer of some sort. Just my thought.

R. Skye

Does the world have an equivalent of a hacker for EssPro stuff? One of the concerns around the pod is access. The trackers, if integrated with the pod in a way that data is sent and received between the devices, could create an exploit. Would that be a concern Fabi or Upgrade would bring up or address if it is a viable concern? While Bastion may not be able to do this with their lack of essance related attunement/mutations... Locke with his private army...err... Sentinels... may pose a unique problem. Is that something the sheer processing power of Athena would be able to mitigate on its own? Could Ameye's infrastructure forceably network with Athena?

Bryan Swanson

These chapters were awesome!

nin10do

I think that the book is great so far in the many relisterning of it one thing I would note is that the friends interactions are missing until elixir machines onwards and although Sal is annoying him with predicting his future book one they aren’t talking it’s like he out grown them and they going to be in the guild

Sherry Walles

I'm not sure chapter 72 is missing anything, but it seems the flow is just a bit choppy in the last two pages. That's a personal feeling, so with that and $4 you can get a cup of coffee, yeah?

Kerradeph

Yeah, this was my immediate thought too. Like, is there a way to lock down the esspro to prevent people from modifying it after they have their hands on it? What could be done if they were able to modify the esspro to remove the blockers from communicating with Athena? Could Nexus permission limitations prevent that kind of abuse? Could the esspro that handles access permission be done on Athena's side to prevent privilege escalation on the end user side?

Pickled Rick

They need to get into Athena first as Athena can scan the person to see their skill, weave condition, skill mastery and their current stat distribution. The tracker will just download your profile from Athena and use Legion to give you your stat sheet and quest log. The tracker will have basic skills to monitor which quests you complete and send that info back to Athena. The Prime skill in Athena can then extrapolate what quests you need to do next to progress your skill. By keeping the trackers simple it should keep costs down as it will basically act as a sophisticated go pro that links back to Athena instead of needing an expensive tracker like the one Sal wears which has its own set of high level skills built in.

Andrew Tobin

Because he knew Prime could use rules, was all about rules, and he trusts Fabi as a senior on builds and she taught him so much through the store. She is almost another de facto teacher.

Andrew Tobin

It’d be interesting to see coach or Athena with the Argento parents, whose powers are too much for them.

Pickled Rick

It feels more like Brian wanted to have machines take over some of the more tedious parts of guild management and he needed the Elixer Machine, Arkright and Athena to do that. If Sal wanted to make a legendary weapon for Sakura he could either build it offscreen, spend 3-4 chapters making plans and building it or 1 chapter where he and Sakura discuss parameters for the weapon and let Arkright build it. I can really see the machines having a huge payoff story wise going forward. I agree they have gotten in the way of his relationships a bit, albeit less so than in Book 4 when he made the Arkright almost completely by himself over half the book. Should be back to normal from next week I think.

Andrew Tobin

They talked about using trackers to give students basic mobile recording of performance and stats in previous chapters. Having it tied onto Prime and Athena now just makes that more powerful a concept. Having a few other powers like tracking of enemies, teams, data, etc would also be good.

R. Maxwell Steele

I think the healing device Sal gave them were supposed to fix the body power disconnect. It never seemed to make sense with how Sal couldn't fix the same issues in his own body, like a device that heals eyes to counter damage from all-sight and adapt to it's future use should have worked on Sal as well.

DRA

I am looking forward most to the showdown with Slade,

Ira White

OK I just blitzed everything from chapter 1 of legacies to here and I NEED MORE. Love this series keep being awesome.

Frilas

I’m enjoying the chapters and the direction the story is taking, but I’m struggling with some of the logic behind skill evolution. Awakener evolving makes sense since it’s the skill Sal injected, but I don’t understand how Skill Master could evolve after being injected. If it were a skill specifically for items—like the one Sal created for the elixir machine—that would make sense, but evolving a human skill after removing the weave by adding it to an item feels confusing. Similarly, the ravel method in Awakener doesn’t seem like it should trigger a skill evolution. It feels more like it enhances the existing skill to an ultimate version rather than evolving it. Evolution, as shown with Fabi’s skill or Predator, happens when something new is added, like additional teeth to the weave, not just when a skill is refined. The pacing of the story also feels scattered. Since Coach appeared, there’s been an overwhelming amount of information and discoveries, and after Sal’s three-week rest, we’re suddenly thrown into a rushed one-week prep for Shade. This reminds me of the start of Book 3, but in that case, the rushed week served as a buildup to the tower, allowing for more depth later. Here, the rapid sequence of events makes it harder to stay immersed. The progression also feels uneven. A third of the book focuses on Sal designing and building the elixir machine in three days, followed by a three-week break and a single dungeon run. Now, we’re in a one-week prep phase, and it seems unlikely we’ll see Shade in this book. With around 90 chapters, I suspect the book will end on the day of the dungeon with the Delvers. Another time skip would feel odd, especially since so much time has already passed, and it’s Sal’s first week of actually taking classes after missing weeks. If he skips classes for dungeons, it’s hard to see how he can become the top savior while missing such crucial time, since realistically he should be on the verge of failing his classes. Going by the more slice-of-life direction at the start, the skips should be between meetings instead of everything happening at once, then a week skip with nothing, and then everything at once again. That would also work better with the attempts at introducing POV changes. Lastly, I wish we had more clarity about Brophy. He’s mentioned repeatedly and used as an example by Coach, but Sal never asks what happened to him. This makes the topic feel unresolved and more like a distraction from the main narrative. Looking forward to seeing how these elements develop in the next chapters!

Jonathan Campbell

Sal is going to be confronting Deathstroke about something? I definitely missed that crossover being teased!

Ron Blondeau

Nothing wrong with these chapters, they are great. Nice to see Upgrade and Fabi advising Sal. The complexity of Sal's inventions is sometimes hard for me to follow but not for some obviously. Something else is bothering me about this story, not in a bad way but from another angle. Sal is 18 or 19 years old. This is the time in a male's life when testosterone peaks. Sal had "a bit of fun" with Hannah and it has been stated that he finds Upgrade, Vanessa, Divinity, and Fabi beautiful. Is it time for that aspect of the story to mature?

Sloth

The whole assisted suicide interaction feels very off-tone for the series

Justin

I can't compliment these chapters enough, the crafting, the character interplay, the set-up for future schemes...Like I said in Discord, I just wanted to keep quoting everything I was reading! Well done again Brain, and please make every day a Monday lol.

Tanstaafl

After reading this set I am struck with the notion that folks would want to have something over the eyes - a tracker. This seems ovely complicated to get a report from Athena. Why not just deliver it to their Quest tablet [of non Quest device] from Prime? For Quest members, pay -sit - recieve summary on screen and recieve full report via tablet after 1 hour. This would help reduce the attention on Athena. For Guild acces they and the Guild would recieve the report after 1 hour, indiivduals would recieve the report after 1 hour. That timing could be reduced over time and for Coach to have the full results to consult with individuals

Nicolas

Thank you so much for these chapters!!!! Love the crafting and cant wait to see the results of legion!

Pickled Rick

Because the guilds don't have quest tablets and the tracker can record you completing the tasks as you do them and track your stats unlike a tablet as they grow

Dutch Palmer

What's missing before the next chapter is the appraisal!

R. Skye

The reread does make it seem off, but I think that is because it is the first signs of Fabi having PTSD from her experience at the Gala. This is her first time seeing a machine similar to what she got into. I can see her getting triggered a litte by it. After the incident happened she was swept up in excitement, brought to a party, worked on a mythical device with arguably her closest mentors... she hit the dungeons to try and master her ability and came to the conclusion to lock down her ability till she gets control. This could be seen as escapism to avoid processing the trauma. She has to completely reaclimate to how she does things now that she can literally handwave things into being. Then, when she is finally getting comfortable with her new powers the one person who was essentially her savior destroy his eyes on a project. A project she used her powers to make better. After the incident she escapes provessing the trauma again as she hit the dungeons hard. While it was stated it was to help get components and build something to help Sal... that behavior is destructive. The dark humor manifesting is just another sign somethings not right with Fabi. I may be mistaken though with my read on things.

Elizabeth Dean

I agree with others that we need less solo crafting and more social interactions for a bit - there are so many collaborative projects that they could create blueprints for and have the Arkwright auto-produce and Argento Auction distribute - like sets of those pocket dimension satchels he designed last semester for a commission for scavenger network or lower grade grappling hook coats for that medic guild, or scanners for hospitals, or the clothes that help people slowly evolve their abilities like the suit he made for his dad etc, all they need to do is send blueprints to the Arkwright right? So I would totally be designing starter kit type sets for each of the other guilds and major factions with the common grade evolutionary runes and equipping all the people who can’t afford high end commissions from a crafter directly - there is so much low hanging fruit, never mind armour and weapons. Sal already has trips lined up to see the refugee cruise ships and identify their equipment needs, as well as invitations from other big players like Ark guild and the medic guild etc. I want to see the stuff he has already made changing the world before he goes and builds another earth shattering thing that then isn’t being used - so far he built all this stuff and has the ability to unknot weaves etc but none of it is actually being utilised fully because everyone is super cautious.

Elizabeth Dean

And by satchel I mean the they asked to be a satchel he turned into a sort of toolbelt - I think it was for foraging but it struck me that’s the kind of thing the scav network needs - I had tons of craft ideas for the scavs - like if they could infuse metals and wood like Sal does and turn them into ingots they could get more than 10 runs out of a location before it was exhausted - maybe a portable device that can take in wood/metal/stone etc and produce regular sized infused composite base products that might not be the best epic crafting material but would be highly useful in quantity for mega projects like the reclamation guilds or Ark. the sheer amount of jobs for unskilled labour like the refugees without their own skills that could be produced by equipment that they could use to become useful to the powers that be on land without having to fight demons themselves.

interested to see the "Sovereign" drone(s) in action and the valkyrie suit to be done

Ty

Fantastic chapters I didn't think chapter 72 was missing anything. I can't wait to see Athena in action!

Brett 'Swantz' Swanson

I've been reading Quest Academy for a few months and I love the series! I've been editing along the way (30 years teaching, I can't help it!) but now maybe I can help my fellow readers before the books are published! Anyway, a mistake that I've seen several times in other books is the incorrect usage of "conscious," when it should be "conscience." The first is when you're aware/awake of something whereas the second is your moral viewpoint.

Brett 'Swantz' Swanson

Chapter 69, page 3, top: "conscious" should be "conscience."
