Luffy falling asleep to the story got a pretty interesting discourse around it. It's not like he refused to listen (like in Nami's case) but he's just him at the end of the day lol. He's mostly defined by how he lives in the moment. And here it's more than just a trait he carries since Arlong park, cuz this time Jinbe wants to tell him the story to make him understand the goal he aims for, and how he wants to use that to manufacture a hero persona for Luffy. Which Luffy disagrees with for his own logic. '' Allies or Foes, that's something you decide for yourself. '' As for Luffy, he'll do what he wants. And if what he wants aligns with his friends, he'll become the most selflessly selfish person around.

This is why I love Luffy, he's not necessarily a pure hearted guy who does good things purely to be good. He always does it to help a friend. Granted Luffy has a loose definition of friends compared to most people. But he beat Alvida for Koby, Morgan for Zoro, Buggy for the mayor and Chouchou, Kurosa for Usopp, Krieg to get Sanji to join, and Arlong for Nami. Same with Alabasta. The overarching plot was for Vivi, but even the smaller arcs helped people he liked like the giants and Chopper. In Skypeia he only wanted to find the gold until he learned the Noland wasn't lying, and after that he merely wanted to ring the bell and Energy was simply in the way. Luffy's not a mean guy, he's not gonna minimize a person's suffering. But in general he only gets involved in big fights for people he likes.

Just a heads up guys, the pacing’s gonna get worse after this. The story’s still great, but you might wanna switch to the manga or try One Pace. I’m now 2 arcs ahead, watching with 1.5x speed trying to get by. Still worth it tho😭

They're already aware the arc has a bad rep when it comes to pacing. They don't intend to switch to One Pace or read the manga. If they survived the ball ordeal, they can survive anything.

I don’t like the way the subs are translating Luffy’s name change for Shirahoshi. The new translation via the shorter remake version of the arc it's translated way better. This isn’t the first instance I’ve noticed of the old translation of certain names being different from the way it’s currently being translated as there were some terms and place names that eventually changed because they’re supposed to be puns, and the translators just didn’t know at the time, I won’t specify which ones because that’d be a potential spoiler, but this is the first time that it’s actually bothered me. In the new translation Luffy calls Shirahoshi Crybaby, until this moment when he calls her Wimpyhoshi but here they’re not translating the Wimpy part and just leaving it as Yowahoshi, and leaving a translation note for what Yowa means. I’m 100% fine with not translating certain words and just having translation notes if it’s like an attack name, or the name of a place, or a joke that just doesn’t translate well into English, but in this case, I just hate that there not fully translating the new nickname. Wimpyhoshi is just so much better than not translating it. Like I don’t know why I’m so worked up at this as it really doesn’t matter, but it does bother me.
