You weren't doing the wrong thing as there isn't a wrong thing. Though in that vein, do make sure you read all the dialogue, it's both essential to understand things and actually well crafted.

I think their chat maturity should be decent enough to have it open. Though making sure chat knows how to act and having a good team of mods to snipe the bad apples also helps.
