Thanks Evie! You picked up on details I didn't notice until seeing the episode several times. I believe Mal fully intended to let Jayne die, until he saw that Jayne did care what the crew thought of him. Had he really been purely mercenary, his habit of taking for himself would've had him unashamed. Mal is betting Jayne's growth will continue. It's also striking that when Simon was back in his own world (elite Dr in a hospital hierarchy) he was distinctly more confident and assertive. Nice reaction!
