I'm not an expert on neural networks and AI and such but I'd like to be a contrarian in that I think atleast for the moment currently most people overestimate the abilities of what we currently call "AI" as the buzz term that every tech company is trying to profit off of. Ultimately all these large language models like chatgpt, grok, claude or gemini are doing is just an insanely powerful predictive algorithm replicating bits of pre-existing text which gives off a veil of intelligence to an observer analysing the output. Obviously we don't know whether or not maybe even the human mind could work similarly but to me it would seem quite arrogant to assume you could create a sentient emotional digital entity through such an at its core simple method and system that requires so much pre-existing data. Like a baby doesn't really know much of anything, have much data/knowledge but is still conscious and has feelings. Of course then you get to the problem of trying to prove another beings consciousness through outside observation which you could argue is impossible as you can't experience what it's like to be anyone other than yourself. Suffice to say there's no way of knowing if you can really create any kind of sentient digital entity with emotions through neural networks or lllms and even with different pathways to try to do that you could still never know those traits to be true from an outsiders perspective. Trying to claim the way human cognition works is just predicting the next word and through that somehow being able to have creativity and the ability to come to new novel conclusions and be creative just seems like a really cynical and reductionist view on the amazing natural creation that is the human mind. Of course the ui's in this show aren't llms or anything but it's good to remember the "fiction" part of science fiction. Like Maddie somehow downloading and storing terabytes of her dad on like one computer in seconds.

Man i've not seen this show before, didn't even know it existed, but i think i'm gonna really like it cause already 4 minutes into you're commentary and i have so many thoughts. Namely, this idea of what counts as "you"(clones, digital copies, near identical parallels versions of yourself, etc) is an idea/thought experiment i've always been super into and have thought a lot about and it honestly comes up surprisingly often in media. The natural instinct it seems for most people is to draw a clear hard distinction between the two, that somehow the two yous are inherently different. And i have that same gut reaction but after thinking about it long enough it's my belief that if there ever were two versions of yourself, both versions would be "you", indistinguishable to literally everyone but YOU, and that drawing that line between the two would be meaningless and a little arbitrary to everyone except to you cause the reason we get that instinct to say the two are different is because to YOU, you're you and their them but like copying a file from your computer to a flash drive, if the copies are perfectly identical, saying one isn't the real version of the file would be weird. So that line we want to draw, literally just comes down to our qualia about experiencing "us" and while kinda unintuitive i think if there was a version of yourself that continued to exist even after YOU don't, then even if it's not YOU getting to continue on and experience, you still exist. Like if you were told that in one minute you will be obliterated and cease to exist and there's no way out of it, but if you want, you can press this button that will create an exact perfect copy of yourself the nano-second you stop existing and your life will continue on like normal. Pressing that button would give me some relief that i'd still be alive even if it's not me me. I'd know that continuing on out into the universe would be all the actions and effects that "I" would've done i just wouldn't get to experience them. Which is strangely similar to death in that(well depending on what you belief) eventually you're experience will come to an end and all that will be left of you is the actions you did in the universe while you existed just in this case it's a sort of delayed effect were your actions continue on for a bit after your ceasing. Back to that button hypothetical, i think the answer to why i feel like there is no distinction to your own two versions comes down to if you were given that same button offer but instead for someone else like a loved one(or they were given the offer). After they're recreated i know i wouldn't treat them like they're a different person because by all intents and purposes they'd be exactly the same to me, they'd still be them from my pov and there would be literally nothing i could do to prove one way or the other which they are. And if you really think about, sometimes when you go to sleep and you don't dream, those nights where you seemingly "time skip" straight to the morning, you might kinda be taking something like this button option. You fall asleep, your qualia/feeling of existing stops and then you wake up, but did YOU wake up or did THEY wake up?

That's a great point about the difference in assessment from our perspective vs outside perspectives. Intuitively I wouldn't trust having to "die" to become a digital version of myself, because I don't think it would be Me. But to put myself in Maddie's situation, I would likely be reacting exactly the same way she does to the digital version of her father (taking it for granted that it actually is a 1:1 recreation). A lot of it probably is just continuity, and that's enough. Here's sort of a related value question: Can something be greater than the sum of its parts? If it can, then there's nothing diminished by pointing to the fact that it's "just" comprised of various building block elements and has no actual core existence, or Platonic form underpinning it or something like that. Also, about what you said about death... It makes me think, where do we draw the line anyway? Because yeah, if a copy of ourselves can continue to be "us" in a sense, so can the effects of our actions. We think a lot about the biological element of succession with DNA. But DNA is just one of many things that is transmitted. You could say that actions are their own sort of DNA that are transmitted through the rippling of cause and effect.

My immediate take on it is that all internet based electronics, servers, etc, are like the body for the uploaded consciousness. They were intended to occupy separate limited domains, now they exist in the open internet. So perhaps they’re like siamese twins, multiple consciousnesses housed within one physical body. Of course, there is more potential for overlap, since their entire body is also like their brain. Perhaps they can merge?
