I remember how much they neglected this show back in 2022 on release. They released this and the next episode in the wrong order. Quite a confusing experience. This show also brings into great focus the big difference between western and eastern animation which I would say is largely naturalistic vs theatrical writing. In a show like Pantheon hiring hollywood actors to voice very naturalistic dialogue compared to anime where you'd hire professional voice actors to voice very theatrical dialogue. I'm mostly just saying this to gush over my two favorite voice performances of the show which are Daniel Dae Kim as David and Paul Dano as Caspian. Honestly it's impressive the cast they were able to get for this show compared to a show like Invincible with far higher budjet, but far more lacking in its animation quality quite often. Of course Pantheon is mostly dialogue scenes but still there is some very well done and creative action as well. I hope with this show finding its new home on Netflix that similar projects will have chances to get greenlit in the future

I was reading about the recording problems in early episodes. Seems like there were some production nightmares at least partly as a result of Covid. I can't judge the episode order thing cause I watched Mob Psycho in the wrong order that one time 😅

I really liked the mention of the red queen effect in the post watch discussion. It’s actually a prominent theory regarding why sexual reproduction evolved. It’s much more resource-intensive and less efficient than asexual reproduction, yet it’s the only way (almost) all complex organisms reproduce. The red queen effect in this case is the arms race against parasites, where having two sets of DNA recombining into a brand new, unique set gives the new organism an advantage in combating parasites because said parasite would not have a specific advantage like it would against a previously existing genome. I’m sure there’s some way to relate this to Pantheon, it’s definitely in there somewhere.

I really can't believe i sniped the railroad spike guy connection so on the nose. I swear I hadn't seen the show before lmao, this show just seems to somehow perfectly align with a whole bunch of topics, themes, and thoughts i have and like. About the confusion with the Laurie contacting Caspian situation, Laurie first reached out to Caspian through the forum thread where Caspian answered under the username of Gage. So she didn't know Caspian as Caspian. And that's really it, her line of not knowing is just her only knowing him as Gage. But also because in this episode she's starting to forget stuff it kinda muddies the waters and makes it a little more confusing. Kind of a tangential off the beaten path thought but strangely i feel more scared of 'the fear of death' then the fear of 'death' atm. People being scared of death is incredibly pervasive both in real life people and in fiction as a narrative theme/motif. And from an outsider looking in at how people feel this death anxiety from some people i've know as well as how it's often written, it's seems like a horrible thing to have, a constant looming anxiety. And like obviously i don't want to die myself and i wouldn't be okay with dying right now or if i knew my time was short. And when i've been in situations where either in the moment or looking back i think "jesus i was really close to fucking dying there if i made just one or two wrong moves." and that feeling of being so close to death is really unnerving and horrifying but i've not really had that existential dread that fills people with anxiety at just the mere thought of their encroaching eternal non-existence. I'm okay with the idea of one day not being here, or i guess i kinda figure i won't care once i'm not. But i'm young, mid-twenties, so idk if my contentedness with the idea of death is an aspect of my youth caused from my pov of my upcoming death seeming so far down the docket(*knock on wood*). And it's THAT that kinda worries me. I'm making a meal out of something i prolly don't need to make a meal of, it doesn't really bother me that much just i've definitely thought way more about if and how it would suck if it's the natural progression of a person's life to get more fearful of death as you get older and the deadline starts to get closer then i have about dying itself. I really hope it's not the case and I can age gracefully towards it, rather then becoming increasingly agitated and anxious or burdened as my time runs out. Also just have to mention how absolutely batshit crazy Caspian's life went off the rails for the last couple weeks but especially the last day or so. Like talk about exponential growth. Finds out he's being watched by logoryithms cause he was snooping at their black site. Finds out that actually that had nothing to do with it and their specifically watching him for some reason. Finds out his parents are lying to him. Finds out his girlfriend is fake. Finds out that actually he's a clone of some tech billionaire super genius and that his whole life is an elaborate orchestration in some plot to solve a larger then life problem and that his parents aren't even his real parents. Finds out uploaded intelligence is not only real but two already exist. Actually three exist. Actually actually hundreds might exist cause the third one started an arms race of uploading consciousness with 6 of the biggest governments in the world and now the world's probably going to rip itself apart. Like his freak out and desire to stick his head in the sand is honestly justified.

I think that the midlife crisis, the fear of death, the sudden existential panic... Those aren't necessarily a result of age alone but how age and time force upon you realities that you may not have wanted. If there's some fantasy or beautiful lie or something being relied on, time will expose that. But I think that also means that since it's a function of mistaken assumptions as opposed to time, it's perfectly possible to age joyfully and to even experience life getting increasingly better as time passes. Examples of some of these things are like... "I'm special and my destined moment is coming." "I'll always feel as physically energetic and unencumbered by pain as I do right now." "My dating prospects have nothing to do with my looks and everything to do with who I am inside." Etc. About Caspian... It's overwhelming. I wonder what actually is painful about it. Putting myself in his shoes a lot of it is actually thrilling. What hurts is the relationship stuff. You mean I have NOBODY who actually loved me? I'm that susceptible to lies? What else do I not know? You mean she WASN'T attracted to me? Etc.
