This episode was TENSE. From a writing perspective, I think this was a wonderful payoff from a slow burn happening over the last few episodes. Thinking about it now, this all started happening after Maomao returned to the palace under Jinshi's direct authority. And although it was a brief moment, Lakan's authority over the situation to allow Maomao to do what she needed to was a somewhat terrifying and intense pressure shown with how the guards didn't dare challenge his authority or decision in that moment. We still don't exactly know what angle Lakan is working from, but he seems to be watching over Maomao, in a way. His first scene with Maomao in the series shows him quite literally watching over her from a distance. But three way they were setting this whole episode up and walking us through the thought process was so cathartic. They refreshed us as a viewer to make sure we remembered relevant characters and information and how they would coincide with the current events happening in this episode. Holy hell, I appreciate how this series scratches that specific itch for sowing seeds in plot points and allowing them to grow and develop beautifully. Almost...like a flower.
