(the world used to be softer: a classic comic from the Softer World archives, and some memories.)

-

a world where cats spoke to god, and giant babies terrorized towns. where sea monsters were real, and being in love was punk rock.

that was a softer world, at first.

aspirational.

but part of the joy of writing the comic was realizing that it wasn't just a fantasy. there were people out there like us, who knew that sometimes the blurry photos of sea monsters were sexy rolling naked swimming bodies in the fog.

these were the people who knew about secret picnic spots. who knew that feeling where you do something so embarrassing that you have to tell everyone you love as soon as possible to exorcise the shame.

people who would rather die terrified than live forever.

These posts feel really special, and this is particularly lovely. It feels like time travelling back to a particularly shiny moment and then finding out that that moment was kinder, and weirder, and warmer, more welcoming than you even realized.
