Hello! I took a picture of me smiling, because the picture in my last letter was too sad.

I play chess every day. I have been playing chess every day for about fifteen years now. And when people assume I like chess, I understand. Every day? You must love chess.

I hate it.

I've always struggled to explain that dynamic. But I recently started reading a biography of Grandmaster David Bronstein (author of one of the best chess books I have ever read: Zurich International Chess Tournament 1953). In the biography, I found the following perfect expression of how I feel about chess.

I fell in love with chess pieces as a little girl. I was an ok player, but at some point I started letting boys win because the anger in their losses got frightening. But the pieces... 32 sculptures per game. Some hand carved, some whimsical, some mass produced like Warhol's soup, some detailed and realistic, some abstract... and its sculpture that is meant to be touched. Other than chess, when do you get to touch that much art?

The contrast between the declared intention of the picture and the content of the book is intense. Hope you are doing reasonably. Sending you hugs.

I have a lovely hardcover of chess pieces throughout history, from the simple and plain to the lavish and elaborate golden treasures.

Great shirt. I genuinely don’t know if I like chess or not.

I remember you shared a similar sentiment maybe uhhhh a decade ago, from another chess expert who said mastering chess can't really be applied to anything BUT chess, and chess is only important to other chess players. I don't remember who said that. Starting to think chess players aren't happy people :(

Hey, you gotta do something, might as well play chess
