AKIRA is all hand‐painted. no CG. 1 month to white smoke.

AnTonio

Yes it was the peak of the pure Handdrawn Animation Time. The only Animes of this Era who impresses me visualy nearly like Akira are Laputa, Venus Wars and The Wings of Honneamis.

vkunia

I had no idea.. I had a gut feeling because it looked so authentic and really caught my eye but I'm glad my suspicions were confirmed - it really was remarkably done. :)

vkunia

After watching the videos you sent... I still cant get over how meticulous and detailed it was. The end result was worth it :)

I saw this anime when it premiered in the 1980s. I was interested primarily because the title was same as my first name Akira. But even after the movie ended, I had still no idea what AKIRA meant at all, haha.

AnTonio

Great Story! :-) It must be cool to have auch a special name :-)

iHatePiano

Yeah, and what was really special about seeing this on July 16, 1988 in Tokyo, was that you could witness a nuke exploding at the same time and place in the opening scene. I rememer I got hyped!

AnTonio

oh... this must have been pretty scary...! By the way, did back then people react strangely (because of the movie) when you said your name is also Akira?

iHatePiano

Not really. In fact, Akira is not a rare name in Japan. You know Akira Kurosawa.

vkunia

OMG I was going to ask whether that was your first name or not but I didn't want to be rude!! 😆

iHatePiano

Haha, that's not rude at all. AKIRA is the first name in Japan, and it's almost always boy's name.

Thamor

I always take from this movie, there is a limit how far you want to go with seeking power from the unknown and just keep going. Another is boy who is mentally weak given god like powers...never ends well.

(Sorry i'm using google translator) It is delightfully innocent the moment when you express that the meeting of politicians is creepy. As if that is not real. Because of their disorder, the indifference of some, the selfishness of others and their secret plans that do not consider the people at all. But unfortunately I will say that the congress meetings in my country are exactly like this. A fight full of accusations, Without any constructive result. Japan is a very orderly country. So for them the street riot and the violence of the people, in the years that Akira was produced, it was just a fantasy and terrifying projection of the future. However, they predicted many disorders in recent years in different countries. Similar in scale to those shown in the movie ... the future is now It is interesting how the movie accommodates all visions of the same conflict. That's why there is no defined line of who are the good or the bad. Everyone has their own reasons. The military, the politicians, the religious, etc. It is only ordinary people, represented in the biker gang members, who really suffer the whole debacle, and yet no one is really innocent. The next step of evolution mentioned at every moment, has been seen in different works where the mind transcends the physical. And the world of ideas becomes real. Resembling the star child from Stanley Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey. According to some religious traditions, God is the beginning. It is the moment when he aware of themself when creation begins. Once you discover yourself, your mind begins to formulate the entire universe. That is why at the end the phrase is heard, "I am Tetsuo. And the stars and galaxies begin to emerge. Excellent video reaction. It is nice to rediscover this old movie with someone who is able to be surprised by it for the first time.

vkunia

I agree, after thinking back on it that had to have been the main theme of the film :)

vkunia

Thank you for your insightful and well thought out comment! I see, it's sad to know that some politicians truly are like that and I can only imagine how terrified people must've been in Japan when originally seeing this.

I've heard it that in terms of detail, Akira had a larger than normal amount of animation frames drawn for it, which is why each scene has so much incredible detail. Even compared to Ghibli films of the time, Akira has roughly twice the amount of cels drawn for it.

A few years late, but I'd like to point out a few plot points. The manga has six huge volumes. The movie leaves out a huge part of it and those parts it keeps are changed a lot. All characters are well developed in the manga and they act for reasons, instead of filling generic roles. The story is way longer and the background is explained way better. If they wanted to represent all that it couldnt have been done in any reasonable lenght of a single movie. So its ok. That said, some plot points that might be notably missing and need explanation (compressed as much as possible): a) "The power": Picture several phases of the development of life, from tiny beginnings to the most complex form that we cant even imagine. Each stage of development has more influence on the world. A (single) tiny bacteria or whatever cant effect the world as much as a human can. It lacks the strenght and understanding. And a human cant influence the world as much as... whatever the next big step is. Now imagine that a being gains access to the power that should normaly be reserved to the next level of evolution. Thats whats happening here. Humans gained access to powers beyond theire standing in the natural order. b) What is happening to Testuo when he gets out of control: This is a huge Part of the manga. Tetsuo has this terrifying level of power awaken in him. But as he is just a human (and not blessed with too much self control) he can use it but he cant control it. The power erodes his mind and body, breaks free and connects with the world around it. It absorbs parts of other beings and machines to create a larger host for itself. But it has no mind of its own so it reacts to emotional stimuly from everything around it. By injecting HUGE doses of drugs Tetsuo can slow it down, as well as with spiritual guidance. But that cant stop the fundamental problem that this is not his power to have. c) The "Blast": This happens several times in the manga, in different sizes. It is not a real explosion, it is more like a breaking free of of raw power. All beings close to it can effect it but controling it is nearly impossible. After each blast the initial host feel better, as he has lost some of his power and is more in control, but again, theres no stoping the breakdown. d) Akira: One of the kids from the experiments, he had the biggest potential and reached a unique level of power. In the mange he is not cut into pieces. He is basically a braindead zombie that follows Tetsuo around (who builds a cult around himself). In the end the old kids reawaken his mind and when Tetuso has his last, catastrophic (!) breakdown he builds a reversed polarity blast to balance it out and encapsule it in a seperate reality/universe/dimension whatever you want to call it, that is seeded by him, tetsuo, the kids and the memories of theire lifes (remember the last words of the movie? "I am Tetsuo"). One last things: there are very very few "bad guys" in the manga. Its just that people have different levels of knowledge and try to influence the events in a way that seems reasonable to them. pretty cool to be honest.
