Switching to Subscription Billing on September 2nd (Patreon)
Content
I'm not sure if Patreon notified you as well, but they're phasing out the Per Creation billing model due to Apple being very fun individuals to work with. This has a soft deadline of November 2024, at which point Patreon will no longer support new iOS Patrons for the Per Creation billing model, and a hard deadline of November 2025, at which point the Per Creation billing model will be completely eliminated. I've chosen to make the change now.
What this means for you: starting September 2nd 2024, billing will be changed from Per Creation to Subscription billing. Once the switch to Subscription billing is complete, rather than pledges being paid once per video, they will be paid once per calendar month. For pre-existing members, the charge will occur on the 1st of the month. That means the first date a monthly charge will occur for pre-existing members is October 1st. For new members, the first charge will occur when they sign up, and then once per month on the calendar day they signed up (So a Patron who signs up on October 15th will make their second payment on November 15th).
The three tiers and their pricing will remain the same:
$1 per month (name listed in credits)
$5 per month (prior plus commentated videos)
$10 per month (prior plus vocal shoutouts in credits).
While this change is mandatory on Patreon's part, this is actually accidentally a good thing for me; I chose Per Creation back when I was making shorter videos at a faster pace. Nowadays I tend to work on bigger projects, and the Per Creation model has prevented me from safely taking on the really big projects I want to do since I'm on a ticking clock to pay the bills; it's hard to justify a 100+ hour JRPG when I could do a simple platformer in a couple days. A switch to Subscription billing means I can focus on the videos I want without having to worry about a set-in-stone deadline. I'd still like to get at least one out a month, but the safety net is incredibly welcome. I'd even been looking into opening a second, subscription-based page literally within the last week, so this was perfect timing. Everybody please thank Apple for their incredibly convenient inhumanity!
