This is important and will come up in the main comic pretty soon but reminder that characters in the story are referred by which city-state they're from with the last or two last syllables of that city-state. So Ernest, being from Throughhurst, is a "hurst" which is also considered being bottom rung of the ladder in the social hierarchy.
