This is going to be long.....be prepared. Sorry Harry but this time I have to disagree, strongly. We are in season 7 and it has been proven over and over again that the initial narrative Damon is the bad brother and Stefan is the good brother was there to be flipped. Damon proved over and over again to be a good person, selfless, caring and that he worked on the effects that his traumas did to him, not to be a victim, because Damon is a victim, not to have his emotional outburst governing his life, and that was all Damon work, Elena had nothing to do with it. He had the best redemption arch among all the characters. He was practically screwed up by everyone, Katherine, Emily, his own brother, Lexi, his own other side of family that sold him to the Augustine society, that is why going around with his humanity OFF for 50 years without nobody helping him. He killed that pregnant lady that was that part of the family that sold him out, terrible thing to do, surely but that doesn’t make him a bad person, because a bad person once regaining his humanity does feel the responsibility of what he has done and try to atone for it. Damon atone for his mistakes over and over again, even Bonnie acknowledge it. All vampires with their humanity off did horrible things, nobody excluded, Caroline, Alaric, Elena, Rose in her mad state of mind…and most of all Stefan that even with his humanity on wasn’t surely a saint …the 20s? Stefan was making lists…., and they didn’t even had a reason, like Damon to be bitterly resentful to that side of his family, sold him to be torture for 5 years, while living his house, in his properties, having the best life to his expenses, and nobody cared to know what happen to him. The others just killed random people, in great numbers, and because they were just two minutes characters, we as audience don’t care, tend to forget, it looks less bad, when it is not. So why singled out Damon? TVD is a great exercise for critical thinking, and to be weary of facts against words. So what are the facts here? The conversations between Damon and Stefan in the wood is crucial. Why Damon put himself in the coffin? Because Stefan, Valery, Tyler, Enzo, were hammering him that he was danger to the people he loves, were blaming him for things out of his control. Then Stefan and Bonnie risking their life for him, tipped his decision towards taking himself out of the equations, because he never ever wanted Stefan or Bonnie to risk their life for him. And it is not like he went for a nap, he desiccated himself, excruciating pain, he had to chain himself to do it. Why believing to what is Stefan saying? When since season one, the writers make him say things proven to be wrong on things he believes to be right, especially regarding his brother. He is judgemental and self-righteous, without the goods to back this attitude up. He is the ripper, he is the one that threaten Elena over Witchery Bridge that told her on her face he couldn’t care less about Jeremy being killed, the one that let Elena drawn because he didn’t wanted to be hated, contrary to his brother that would do anything to keep his loved one safe included be hated for it. Did he ever atone for it? Did he ever ask for forgiveness, not ever, because Stefan is a smooth talker and can manipulate everybody, audiences included, to believe he is the bee’s knees. But is he? Be weary of smooth talker people, the world is full of it, especially in politics. Do not believe to words, believe ONLY in facts and facts require good memory, the memory of facts is fundamental for us not to be manipulated, and confused by well crafted speech because smooth talker can make you believe anything, unless you have your foot standing on solid, clear, facts, present to your mind facts, having a level of clarity that no clever, crafty, well thoughts, well delivered speech, can confuse us into thinking differently to what is real and is true base only of facts. “Caroline between me and you is not going to happen” “ He is a monster (referred to Damon)” “ I hate you Katherine” “Elena loves Damon because of the sire bond” “Damon is dead and there is nothing we can do about it but move on” and now “I don’t believe you will find me” the writers during the show make Stefan open his mouth and say things that will prove him wrong. The phone conversation is one of those moments. What is going on there? Again Damon fixing impossible situations, as always. Stefan is in a freezing cold snowy storm, in the body of an addict, an alcoholic with withdraw symptoms . In that situation if you stop you'll die for sure, you HAVE to keep moving. So, in order to make his brother not giving up, Damon had to do and say anything to make him move, react. So he does, successfully. Stefan is pouring his anger and frustration on Damon, and he lets him, as family do, as parents do. None of us would dare to fight with a stranger as we do with your parents or our siblings and nobody is taking what it is said during those fight seriously, because nobody means anything. That is what is going on. Damon feeding on his anger and frustration is what is keeping Stefan alive. Damon use that to make him mad, to react. He doesn’t care about appearances, about reputation, about truth, he only cares to make Stefan move and not die. Is Damon selfish? No, seven seasons to prove it, in countless occasions. This occasion included. Did he not care about anybody before meeting Elena, his brother included? Not truth, we know that. The game they plaid when they were kids, once again the writers make Stefan said something that is deeply wrong, that Damon will never find him. Damon was playing by the rules because he was scared that if he entered in their father studio, their father would know that Stefan broke the rules and he was scared about what it could happen to Stefan, because he knew what their father was capable of, on his own skin. Damon always protected his brothers from abuse, he gave up his childhood for the chance to give one to Stefan; he left him to have an affair with Katherine when was already in a relationship with her and believed she was the one; he let him turn himself into a vampire and abandon him, never acted of his anger about it; he let Stefan blame him for his actions cause by his blood lust; he let him live his life away from him as Lexi wanted; he never burden his brother with his traumas, he never told him about the Augustine chapter. He always patched up Stefan and Elena I even when he was in love with her and it was obvious, she was in love with him too. He turned Bonnie’s mom so that Stefan didn’t have to be hated for it, he ended up in the prison world to save everybody… I mean, I can carry on forever….seven seasons of actions, where Damon prove to be the opposite of how the initial narrative let us to believe. So yes, Damon is a good person, it was a good person in the first place, he never bragged about his good deeds, just didn't want anybody to know, because "When people see good, they expect good, and I don't want to live to anyone's expectation" those are the words of someone that has been hurt too many times. He doesn’t have to be nice to everybody he encounters, not everybody he encounters was nice to him, the majority, in fact, his family included end up to seriously arm him. So as any adult that he ave somme self respect, he doesn’t give his love just to anybody, because his love is precious, deep, committed, loyal and selfless, it is not cheap merchandise. He gives his love and devotion to a selected group of people that understood he is a good person and showed him love. This episode is great because episode 10 is Damon centric, this is Stefan centric, giving the actors to act their socks off, to really showcase their craft, on another level. And the writing is just beautiful, the conversation among the brothers is fantastic, the idea. of the phenix stone is genius, the idea of having bodies scattered in dead bodies is so clever, the cinematography of it how it is shoot and edited, the music...everything is just brilliant.

Comment written by Newmoon: “The phone call scene between Stefan and Damon in the snow is one my favourite scene in the whole show. There are multiple layers to that scene that need to be unraveled. First of all we have to remember that the effects of hell stone’s emotional and psychological manipulation is still at play here. The last thing Stefan remembered before he was stabbed by the sword was the things that Rayna was telling him, phoenix stone was trying its best to play with Stefan’s superiority complex and made him see himself better than his brother and see Damon as a worthless, selfish person that brings nothing to Stefan’s life but misery and destruction and Stefan could never rely on him and we can see the affect of that psychological manipulation when Stefan said twice in this scene that he wouldn’t believe that Damon would find him and save him which Damon proved him wrong. Rayna was making Stefan relive his childhood memories so he would start seeing Damon exactly as his father was making everyon else in the house hold see him. Like how every thing was Damon’s fault and he would be blamed for everything that went wrong in the house hold. Stefan was doing the same thing in this scene, he tried to blame everything on Damon and Damon because he was raised as a scapegoat, he took the blame as usual and chose to be the punch bag Stefan needed at the moment to let all of his frustrations and anger out on him. If that would make him feel better. When Stefan told Damon how his first instinct was to help the people on the bus, it reminded me of S7E10 when Damon was sent in to the hell world and the similar thing happened, Damon was waken in the middle of war, He didn’t know who he was and where he was and the he went straight to help Haney who needed help as he was stuck and Damon saved him and that’s why Henry kept telling him hero after that, it was also Damon’s first instinct to save people even tho he had no idea what’s going on, so in order to answer the question of who Damon is at his core and what’s in his nature, we need to go back to his childhood. Damon was born in to a very toxic environment with two abusive parents, no one was there to teach him how to love or how to be sympathetic and yet he was able to love more powerfully than all the members in his family because of his selfless nature, because that was literally ingrained in his soul. He couldn’t help but be protective and selfless towards his loved ones. He chose to sacrifice his childhood so Stefan would be protected from the same abuse he had to endure. Accept the role of a parent for Stefan to be his protector and his emotional support while he was himself a child. No one taught Damon how to love, it was in Damon’s nature to love this powerfully but it was Damon who taught Stefan how to love by offering him a selfless, unconditional love that even his parents deny it from him. As @patpet explained before me, this is absolutely untrue that Damon didn’t care about his brother before he met Elena, so why Damon chose to answer Stefan’s question like that? In order to answer this, we have to understand how hypothermia works and how you can slow it down, Stefan was in a very bad condition and it was only matter of time before he froze to death, in order to help someone with hypothermia, you need to make them move their muscles and never let them stay still. Damon knew that Stefan was already angry with him so he tried to use this anger to push Stefan over the edge and give him the rush to move his body and start walking and that’s why he told Stefan exactly what he wanted to hear to make him even more angry. When you’re experiencing anger, your body releases cortisol and adrenaline hormones that makes your heart beats faster and help your body to rise the temperature, it also releases glucose in your blood vessels that would give energy to your muscles to move. Anger literally make your blood boil and that’s what Stefan needed so Damon did what he had to do to trigger Stefan’s anger, every thing about him being selfish and that he was not interested to do the right thing for Stefan before he met Elena was a lie, he was saying all of that to make Stefan angry enough to give him an adrenaline rush to make him walk and to temporarily rise the temperature of his body to prevent him from freezing to death before he could get there. “You’re mad? You resent me? Good and now get up and come kick my ass yourself” The moment Stefan told him that he was walking, if you pay attention to Damon’s facial expressions, you can see the instant and total relief on his face and he no longer tried to make Stefan angry because he needed to be careful not to make him too much angry because that could cause a heart attack so the moment Stefan started walking, Damon knew that his plan was working so he toned it down a little and just carried on the conversation with Stefan. This scene reminded me of S1E20 when Damon told Stefan that he didn’t hate Stefan because he forced him to turn, he hated him because Katherine turned Stefan too, that was also a lie, he saw how Stefan was overwhelmed by his guilt to the point that it made him commit suicide. This is Damon’s way of sacrificing himself for his brother to make himself the bad guy that the reason he hated Stefan was Damon being selfish and it had nothing to do with the fact that Stefan forced him to turn so Stefan wouldn’t feel guilty about it anymore. This episode is kind of the same. Damon made himself the bad guy and put himself in a bad light so Stefan would live.”

I think I remember in s4 Elena was disgusted by a sandwich when she was in transition so we can assume human food tastes disgusting to them. But then in s2 Caroline said human food helps to curb the blood cravings (Stefan said coffee and alcohol has the same effect).

And here lies my main problem with Damon and Elena. I simply despise the trope of the woman being responsible for “fixing” the man. Damon knows the difference between right and wrong, he’s shown on multiple occasions that he’s capable of being a good person, which means he simply chooses not to be when Elena’s not around and I just find that messed up. Why does he need Elena to hand hold him through life? We’re 7 seasons into the show and he still hasn’t grown from that.

I think the reason why I liked this episode so much is because of how intimate it felt. Despite all the supernatural element, it felt very grounded.

Season 3, Episode 16: Rebekah reads from Stefan's Diary out loud what he wrote about Damon: “His bitterness consumes him. He is nothing but blackness and bile.” Season 7, Episode 17 Ambrose, the Memphis serial killer, reads from Stefan's diary: “Day 57 of being pissed off at my garbage heap of a brother.” Damon has never described Stefan in the manner Stefan does about Damon. When that young lady mentioned to Damon about finding her cell phone, we can see how that piece of information became so important to Damon since he knew that Stefan was not going to survive the night in that weather, as stated by the cop at the station who said his colleagues were going to lay low and let freezing weather take care of Marty Hammond/ Stefan. Damon called that cell phone to give his brother a chance to live, no matter how minuscule the chance of survival. Damon noticed that Stefan was leaning into a pessimistic stance when they started talking on the cell phone, but Damon did catch Stefan’s anger, so he used it to avoid Stefan freezing to death. Notice that once Damon tells Stefan to come and kick his ass, the camera focuses on Stefan's Feet, and the audience sees Stefan start walking. To get Stefan moving is why Damon said those things to him. I love how, even after all the turmoil the brothers have endured, we can see Stefan's small laughter when Damon said Stefan used to cheat by playing hide and seek and Damon’s concern when they started talking about their father. While Stefan was walking and talking about what it is like being human with his brother, the audience listened to the song called “Heal” by Tom Odell. We see a car's headlights illuminate Stefan’s body lying on the road. Then we see Damon checking and picking up Stefan’s body like a father would pick up his child in his arms. There was tenderness in Damon’s facial expression—a beautiful moment between the brothers. When Damon arrives, and his car headlights braced Stefan's body, the song repeats four times: “And tell me something last,” meaning that regardless of what the brothers have been through, they never stopped loving each other. What I found out on the web (https: /www.lyricsslayers.com < heal) about the meaning of the song used in that scene: “Tom Odell's song 'Heal' is a poignant ballad that delves into themes of pain, redemption, and the transformative power of healing. The lyrics are a plea for relief from emotional suffering, using metaphors to express the desire for cleansing and renewal. The opening lines, 'Take my mind and take my pain / Like an empty bottle takes the rain,' suggest a yearning to be filled with something purifying to wash away the hurt. The repetition of the word 'heal' serves as both a command and a desperate request, emphasizing the urgency of the singer's need for solace. The song continues with the artist offering up his past and sins, likening them to an empty sail that can be moved by the wind. This imagery evokes a sense of surrender, a willingness to let go of the burdens that weigh him down and to be guided toward a state of peace. The chorus, 'And tell me some things last,' introduces a longing for permanence in the face of healing, a reassurance that the relief found will not be fleeting. It's a call for enduring change, for something to hold onto when the healing process is complete. Tom Odell's musical style, characterized by his emotive piano playing and heartfelt vocals, enhances the song's message. The simplicity of the arrangement allows the lyrics to take center stage, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences with pain and the universal need for healing. 'Heal' resonates with anyone who has ever sought to overcome personal struggles and find a sense of lasting peace.” That song is so appropriate for that scene. It is not a coincidence the producers used it since it gives a glimpse of Salvatore's brothers' history.
