amazing reaction! just wanted to share my thoughts regarding this whole love and fear conversation. i agree that fear is necessary in order to function. it is the thing that allows us to recognize a threat or to acknowledge the negative consequences behind our actions. fearlessness also may lead to an inability to learn from experiences. if you look at psychopaths, they have a difficulty processing fear related stimuli and a deficit in fear recognition. there are some studies about this that i find fascinating where they discovered that individuals who can’t recognize fear find it acceptable to frighten others. so yes, fear is important. when it comes to what stefan was saying to damon, i think it has more to do with letting that fear dictate your choices which has been a pattern with damon. and its not really that strange, really. most people make decisions based on fear and sometimes we like to lie to ourselves and think that its out of love. when my mom was sick, we tried to keep her with us at all costs because of how much we loved her. in reality, we were just putting her through a lot of pain because we were afraid of letting her go and living our lives without her. so i dont think stefan is saying that fear is not valid or that damon shouldn’t be afraid, but that he doesn’t want to make choices because he’s scared of what might or might not happen because that’s how other people end up getting hurt. damon makes the difficult choices, yes, but that leaves the rest of them in a position to have to clean up the mess those choices leave behind. and im saying this from stefan’s perspective who has in multiple occasions gotten screwed as a result. if i put myself in his shoes, then i completely understand why he is telling this to damon. how easy it was for damon to walk away on those he loved because he was afraid of what he might do. that being said, telling damon “i don't want to be you” is pushing it. but its really on brand for stefan to say that since he always has to walk the moral high ground. love the man, but jeez. its not like he hasn’t made decisions based on fear either. his choice of leaving caroline after he was marked was because he loved her and he did not want to put her in danger and therefore it was a sacrifice he made for himself too. BUT not talking to her about it beforehand was, in my opinion, a fear based decision and he did end up hurting her more than he would have if he had faced her and told her that he needed to leave. i just love how it comes full circle by the end. damon going in that vault, not being afraid of dying and not ever seeing elena again for the love of his brother and his friends. and stefan finally letting damon go, which has been a recurrent theme through the season. edit: sorry, me again. i just keep going back to this because in practice this is so difficult omg. so a happy medium would be nice? i think there are times when you have to make the choice based on fear. for instance, if your loved one is in grave danger and they know they are in danger but make a stupid choice to face that danger or just dont do anything about it. do you a) react based on love and allow them to make their own choices, therefore walking into uncertain death? do you tell yourself after they get killed, yes they are dead but damn it, i respected their choice because i loved them or b) do you grab them and get them the hell out of there kicking and screaming to keep them safe? no, youre not respecting their choice but their choice was going to get them killed so … screw that. so i think it really all depends on what is at stake, and who is going to get hurt because of your choice.

The fact that was your last ever E22 reaction is so emosh!! I agree that it is nice for Damon to get the recognition that he deserves! The love between Stefan and Damon is just unmatched. Also, someone else may have mentioned this but, all the season 8 episode titles are famous lines from the series.

I know I love Alaric character, he has no faults, and he has been though so much and he is still a good man, is not bitter, he is level-headed wise, full of love he cannot convey because he is unlucky. Alaric is hands down one of my favourite character.

First of all I agree with Andrea season 8 is fabulous. Who says the opoosite is because has no conseption of what good writing is and what perfection is, in a matter of closing the story and connecting all the loose ends in an astonishing manner that will make the series staying with you forever and making it the standard level you are going to compare other series with, in terms of complexity, depth, character all around building and development, for beauty of writing, for level of entretainment, for answering all your questions, for the level of acting, for the engaging dialogues, for the writing, shooting and editing, for the original ideas, for the world creating, for the belivebility, for the emotional engagement, for how much it challaged your opinions and you POV on things and also made you ponder on things you never pondered before, etc. Season 8 is closing the circle, is closing the characters arc in the most poetic, non convetional non boring non predctable way, to make the show remarkable and unforgettable. TVD is more than just a TV show, it's an experience.

You said it right, another time Damon saved the day among now the countless times he did it. First of all I want to give a shout out for Matt character, because recently there is a stupid trend of character haters that have targeted Matt, for reasons that are inexplicable to me. Matt is the representation of humanity, among supernatural creature, he is reliant, a fighter, a great support to all of his friend, there for them, even though his friendship with them cost him to be killed 3 times, hospitalized and injured countless times, it cost him, his sister, his colleagues, his fiancé. Still he fought for his home, like if he was supernatural, with all he got, he didn’t wanted to feel defeated and having to give up his home, his friends, all he knew since he was born, the place he deeply loved, he was there even in this occasion to remind Bonnie what it is to be human, as he did before with Jeremy. Last episode he helped Damon too, avoiding him to be killed by Bonnie, and even if he never did like the Salvatore brothers especially Stefan, he was available when they needed help. He is not as wealthy as his friends but quite the opposite; he had a chance to improve his life by being a sheriff in his own town, chance that is being taken away from him, being forced to leave, that feel like a defeat for the human race against the supernatural and feels very bitter. Now, the point of doing the right thing is that Damon is always getting to it before anybody else, then they kerfuffle about it for a while, doing the usual sport which is giving Damon hard time, to finally get to the point of agreeing with him because what he thought is the right thing to do is actually the only feasible solution. How many times we have seen this playing up? Every time there is a problem that needs to be fix and Damon is the only one that has immediate clarity on what to do to get things done. Damon is formidable go-getter strategos and he never gets credit for it by his brother that let as usual Damon do the dirty works while he stays back and play the hero that never have controversy, or act to tarnish his reputation. By putting Damon’s own he is protecting his hero role, against the actual hero that save the day every time. Stefan is the most unaware character of the show, his perception of life, of what is right, of himself, of his brother is so wrong, and the writers make us seen it times and times again, with Damon, with Caroline “ Caroline me and you is never going to happen” or here in this episode. Stefan is co-dependent , he is incapable to be happy by himself, he needs someone next to him to support him, to protect him, to make him feel he is a great person, someone that indulge him in his delusions. Before was Lexi, then was Elena, than was Caroline, Damon is constant since childhood, he can’t live without him but he isn’t aware of how much he is co-dependent, how much he has flaws, how much he is incapable to stand on his own feet, how lie has been easier so far to him never getting to atone for all he did, getting away with bad things e did without ever ask or work for forgiveness, forgiveness was just handed over to him, contrary to Damon that for every little mistake he had to work really hard to be forgiven and atone for his bad doing many times over, most of the times for things that are not his fault or that are healthily selfish, like when he decided to desiccate to avoid his friends being in danger to save him. Damon is a grown ass man he has the right to decide what to do with his life and what he feels to be best it shouldn't be considered a bad thing, even if that is “uncomfortable, inconvenent” or hurts friends and family. People have to spread their wings, fly away and live their life, one's cannot always dedicate and sacrifice their one life to the needs of others, people need to have an healthy amount of selfishness and self preservation, not to be sucked, in and swallow up into friend and family life, boundries have to be established, even if Damon is most of the time happy to oblige without ever complaining, or defending himself against unfair criticism, he has the right to decide to live his life as he wants as anybody else. And that seem to be a clear thing for anybody but is not so clear when it comes to Damon. Why everybody else can do this and Damon can’t, and if e attempt to do it he get hatred, resentment, he get called names and have to deal with the fact that people surrounding him are needy people that can’t function without him. The two conversations between the brothers this episode are crucial. In the first one as usual Stefan perception of things is so off. For once he tried to do the right thing which was getting Caroline away from danger, thing she agreed with later. But he doesn’t like to have his reputation tarnished as the one that does the right thing no matter the consequences, because he never ever in his life confronted consequences, he always run away in the other direction to avoid consequences, and controversy, and criticism he can’t defend and had to accept while the other person calm down and realise that it was actually done for the best, out of care and love. Damon is motivated by fear, is motivated by care and love. He cares so much for the well being of his friend and family that he is willing to go to the extreme to make sure everybody is ok even at the cost to be hated, to despise, to painfully desiccate. Stefan doesn’t get it. The second conversation, in front of the volt door, is showing very clearly the brothers role in their relationship. Damon is the parent and Stefan is the child. When Damon told him, “this time I need you to do something different” which is let me go, let me do things on my own, being aware that I can, live a happy life, it is time to act like an adult, spread your wings, fly the nest, be independent from me, to cut the umbilical cord that makes you co-dependent tat don't allow you to function happily without me. It’s very much a parent-son conversation and the amount of love and care is parent-child like, very deep rooted, and unconditional. That is why we feel this love they have for each other, it's so beautiful, profund and emotional.

Newmoon comment: “In this season the writers tried to showcase Stefan’s lack of self awareness more than other seasons and there’s a reason for that. We know that Stefan was raised as a golden child and not having a good awareness of one’s self is an inevitable consequence of being raised as a golden child. Stefan was only getting conditional love from his parents, as long as he behaved exactly how his parents wanted him to, he could keep getting affection and love from them. Mistakes were never allowed and perfection was the necessity. That’s why he was conditioned to believe from his childhood that he needs to be perfect in order to be lovable, so every time he made a mistake, he didn’t want to believe that he made one because accepting that he made a mistake means he has flaws and having flaws means he’s not perfect and if he’s not perfect then he’s not lovable and that’s a terrifying thought for him. As a child his parents were pushing his mistakes under the rug and pretended it didn’t happen and he continued to expect the same treatment from others in his adulthood, excepting every one else would also take a blind eye to his mistakes and shortcomings just like how his parents used to do that for him. This is not the first time that Stefan was forgiven too quickly after what he did to Caroline, the same happened with Elena as well in S3. This could be actually a curse and not a blessing because when you’re not being held accountable for your mistakes, you can never learn from them and use them as a way to grow. Golden child doesn’t have a good self awareness and it’s so challenging for them to develop a healthy mindset to grow mentally because how are you gonna be able to solve the problems when you can’t even see the problem? Stefan always had a fear of being hated and losing his good reputation as the result he would hide his dark side from people around him and he wouldn’t jeopardise his reputation by doing the dirty works. The reason Stefan might refuse to do the dirty works and let Damon do it was not because he necessarily didn’t agree with them and it goes against his morality. There were multiple occasions in the past that he agreed with what Damon was doing, he just didn’t want to be the one who does it because he was terrified of being hated. There’s one example I can refer to that Stefan admitted that he was afraid of being hated. In S5E20 when Stefan was hiding the fact that he killed Enzo from Damon, he was pretending that he was doing it to protect Damon but when Damon confronted him that what was he expecting that Damon would do that he was hiding it from him. He answered:” I thought you would hate me” and when Caroline also confronted him that why he was hiding it from Caroline too, he said:” I didn’t want you to think any less of me”. As you can see this is actually Stefan who’s lived a life ruled by fear up until now. Stefan has a good heart and most of his problems came from immaturity and unresolved childhood issues and it’s not coming from malicious places and his biggest problem is his lack of self awareness and there’s a reason why the writers chose to highlight this issues this much in this scene and the answer is in S8 and I can’t wait for you to watch it and figure it out for yourself.”

I agree with some of you guys about how Stefan and Caroline's reunion feels rushed. Harry, season 8 is sensational, as you will find out for yourself. Oh, I am so looking forward to your reaction to what is coming your way with TVD. Last but not least, the hate that Matt gets from the fandom is unfounded. What did Matt ever do that was so bad? I don't get it. He almost always helped his friends. Finally, Damon is given recognition for helping his loved one.
