I definitely think the Derek and Peter situation this episode was supposed to parallel what happened with Paige. Peter planted the idea of turning Paige in Derek’s head then manipulated him and made Derek think it was his choice, similar to what’s happening now with Cora.

You’re definitely right about this being set up for the rest of the show and that’s part of why this episode and the finale are among my favourite episodes of the whole show. The effects of this “sacrifice” are felt throughout the rest of the show.

For the iced water scenes, the one with Isaac was real ice because Daniel Sharman wanted it to feel more real. The one with Allison, Scott and Stiles was fake plastic ice mixed with some real ice. They saw that with Daniel, his lips got blue and decided against it for the second time.

For clarification, someone asked one of the writers on Twitter years ago. He alluded to the girl Stilinski talking about being an uninitiated banshee that was awakening as she, herself, was crossing over.
