To be fair, the "troll" thing is because that's how Charlotte called the king when they first met. She said she was afraid he was a troll, given how no one would talk about him. He's just repeating that. But yes, the self-deprecation is so heartbreaking to see... Honestly, this season is a masterpiece, but this episode in particular is mind-blowing. Like you said, they turned all the frustration we felt towards George's attitude in the first three episodes into the complete opposite. Witnessing the events from his perspective was absolutely gut-wrenching and of course changed everything we thought we knew. It's just so brilliant.

George used the word "troll" to describe himself because that is what Charlotte used when wondering who the king was in the garden, before realizing she was talking to him

George seems to be suffering from some kind of stress-induced psychosis. My theory is that in the future timeline his illness is compounded by dementia/alzheimer’s. In Bridgerton, he has issues remembering his later life (like the death of their daughter, that he and Charlotte were already married etc) which seem like symptoms of dementia on top of the illness he has in Queen Charlotte.

I do feel that the Doctor purposely triggered George knowing that anxiety brings on his psychosis. George had been living with Charlotte for some time in a relatively stress-free environment due to the fact that it was a “honeymoon” (therefore no Kingly duties) and had no episodes. I think the Doctor got off on controlling the most powerful person on Earth.

Yeah I just get past how he seemed to revel in George's submission, really fucked up

My mom is a psychologist and that was pretty much her guess when she watched the show. She said the main thing was the panic attacks, and that they were so severe it was basically causing him to "dissociate" every time. So I don't know if it's enhanced later on by another illness like alzheimer or if it's just too many of those panic attacks that "rewired" his brain in a more severe and permanent way.

I know some stuff!!! OK. So. The REAL Charlotte and George III were married in 1761. BUT!! There are two things that make me say that Queen Charlotte takes place a few years later, (even though the internet consensus says 1761.) Either a writer was being sneaky or it's a coincidence BECAUSE, the first record of George having a "fit" (though, I prefer the word "episodes" myself) was in 1765 which is also the year that the American colonies sent a delegation to Britain saying "nah, we don't wanna pay you taxes anymore, sincerely kiss-my-ass." 😉 (Which the Princess mentions in her concern about George not having an heir, that the colonies were threatening to withhold taxes.) So. I think this is 1765 and they just made the Bridgerton Queen Charlotte a bit younger. (Which I hope is the case...otherwise...she's dying sometime in Bridgertons run. 😬 Since S3 takes place in 1815...and the real QC died in 1818.) OK, that's enough nerding out from me! (Edit: should say I guess that I come from a family heavy in mood disorders - enough said there...but I just feel so seen by this series, both from the perspective of Charlotte and George. It's a beautiful show.)

King George III (the real historical man depicted in this fiction) suffered from what modern medicine refers to as manic-depressive psychosis, or what would more commonly be described now as bipolar disorder. It has multiple parts and can be broken down into: -Porphyria- A rare, hereditary blood disorder that can cause confusion, hallucinations, and paranoia. Symptoms include pain in the stomach, back, arms, or legs, muscle weakness, and dark or reddish-brown urine. -Bipolar disorder- A psychiatric disorder that's characterized by manic phases. A 2013 study based at St George's, University of London, found that the monarch's letters had similar symptoms to patients experiencing manic phases. -Acute mania- A mental illness that some researchers say best fits the available behavioral data.

Also, yes... This doctor turns out to be a vile human who started off as appearing genuine, but once George asked to dive into experimental treatments, the Dr turned him into a lab experiment to do his radical research on as a test subject. And def got enjoyment/thrill from having THE KING of ENGLAND submit to him.

This is my favorite episode, if there is one because they’re all so good lol. Such great writing to give us George’s point of view of everything we already saw. This is so good!
